10 Best Shower Filters UK 2024 | Aquabliss, Berkey, and More

Many people are not even aware of shower water filters - unless you live in an area that is particularly known for its hard water - but they're actually a little more essential than you might think. Hard water contains chlorine and a considerable range of impurities that can affect your skin, nails and hair, and can even contribute to hair loss and eczema.

Shower filters come as standalone cartridges or showerheads using carbon, vitamin C, KDF-55 or a combination for filtration. The world of water filtration can be a little confusing, but don't worry - we've got your back! This buying guide will discuss the ins and outs of shower filters, as well as including a top 10 list of the best products from big brands such as Aquabliss and Berkey, to affordable favourites from Amazon, eBay and Argos. Let's dive in!

What Is a Shower Filter, and Why Do I Need One?

What Is a Shower Filter, and Why Do I Need One?

Shower filters work in the same way as your Brita water filtration jug at home - they clean the water of any impurities. Whilst tap water is completely safe to drink (as your liver filters out many of the harmful contaminants), our skin, hair and nails don't have a filtration system.

Exposing your skin and hair to hard water time and time again can cause dryness, flakey scalps and splitting nails. It can also be especially irritating to those with eczema, dermatitis and other skin conditions.

Shower filters can either come already installed inside the showerhead, which is attached after the shower arm, or with a cartridge that can be attached before the showerhead. In both cases, the water should be clean before it even reaches your showerhead.

How to Choose a Shower Filter in the UK - Buying Guide

It can be confusing if you've never looked into filtration systems before, so in this section, we'll break it down. We'll go through the main types of filters, their benefits and strengths, and all the other things you need to look out for whilst shopping.

1

There Are Two Main Types of Shower Filter

As advised above, there are two types of shower filters - an in-line shower filter and a filtered shower head. Let's dig into the pros and cons of each one, so you can make a clear decision about which one works for you.

In-Line Shower Filters Can Be Attached to an Existing Showerhead

In-Line Shower Filters Can Be Attached to an Existing Showerhead

An in-line shower filter is any water filter that doesn't contain or isn't implemented inside a showerhead. Perhaps you've recently remodelled your bathroom, and you really like the look of your current showerhead - then pick up an in-line shower filter.

These filter cartridges can be installed just where your existing showerhead and water pipe meet. They're straightforward to put on - simply remove the existing showerhead, fit your filter onto the end of the exposed pipe, then secure the showerhead back onto the other end of the filter - voila!

A Filtered Shower Head Will Fit On Almost Any Shower

A Filtered Shower Head Will Fit On Almost Any Shower

A filtered shower head is exactly what it sounds like - a shower head with a filter inside. These look just like a regular showerhead, so there's no bulky cartridge hanging off the end like you would with an in-line filter. They are usually, however, much more expensive, as they include an entire shower head with it!

A filtered shower head is often the preferred option because these specially-made heads are usually made of a much higher quality than a standard head. If you're not too attached to your existing showerhead, these are generally the best way to go. They can also increase your water pressure and often come with multiple spray settings to help you create your ideal shower experience.

2

Multiple Types of Filtration Are the Best

There are many different types of filtration systems that go inside shower filters. Each has its uses, strengths and benefits. Still, unfortunately, no one system alone will be sufficient to filter out every impurity, so it's always recommended to get a couple of different filtration devices to ensure that your water is as clean and clear as it can be.

Carbon Shower Filters Are Usually the Cheapest

Carbon Shower Filters Are Usually the Cheapest

Carbon shower filters are probably the cheapest and most common type of filtration system found in showers. Essentially they use activated carbon to absorb and remove impurities from the water such as chlorine, sediment, lead, pesticides, and volatile organic compounds (VCOs). Carbon will also help improve the odour and taste of the water.

The problem with carbon filters is that they are easily affected by heat, so if the water reaches 40℃, it will render the filter ineffective - although that is pretty hot! They can be used for a while, although they are probably one of the easiest to become clogged up so they will need replacing semi-regularly.

A KDF-55 Filtration System Kills Bacteria

A KDF-55 Filtration System Kills Bacteria

There have been many studies showing that bacteria grows on the face of showerheads. When we turn on the shower, bacteria can spray into the hot misty air, which, when we breathe in, can contribute to many health problems.

KDF-55 is a type of filter made from a copper-zinc formation that kills bacteria. When these two materials touch, they generate an electrical charge which can remove chlorine, mercury, lead, hydrogen sulfide, bacteria and fungi.

It can also remove odours, improve taste, and eliminate any residual chlorine. The problem with a KDF-55 filter is that it doesn't work too well on removing chemicals and pesticides, so it should be used in combination with an activated carbon filter.

Two-Stage Filters Combine Both Systems

Two-Stage Filters Combine Both Systems

Whilst a single carbon filter will do you for a while and is pretty cheap, and a KDF-55 filter, as we said, shouldn't probably be used on its own, the best result is to combine the two. These are two-stage filters.

Two-state filters essentially use the KDF technology as the first filter, which cleans the impurities, chlorine and bacteria from the water, and then the activated carbon filter will remove any additional contaminants.

Vitamin C Filters Have a Lovely Fragrance but Aren't as Reliable

Vitamin C Filters Have a Lovely Fragrance but Aren't as Reliable

We all know about the benefits of vitamin C - treating the common cold, improving the complexion of your skin, even improving the health of your nails. But, did you know that some water filters contain vitamin C?

Vitamin C has been shown to eliminate chloramine, sediment and chloride from the water, and as a bonus, it's often scented. They exude a lovely fragrance into your shower, making your daily wash seem more like a spa treatment. They are, however, pretty expensive and are not nearly as reliable as the other types of filters suggested, so again, a combination filter is probably best.

3

Think About How Long the Filter Will Last

Think About How Long the Filter Will Last

Another key thing to think about, especially when it comes to cost, is the durability of the shower filter. Many filters need to be changed regularly, and these amounts can vary widely, from once a month to once every six months. If you don't fancy changing your shower filter regularly, make sure you buy one that will last.

You also need to consider the cost when it comes to durability. You may find a cheaper product, but if you need to replace it twice as many times as another choice, is it really the most affordable option? As a guide, the standard shower filter usually lasts around six months.

4

Make Sure the Filter Has an EPA Certification

Make Sure the Filter Has an EPA Certification

It's all very well saying that this filter removes these impurities, but as a customer, how are we ever going to know if that's true? You need to look for an EPA certification awarded by the NFS - a health and safety organisation.

This organisation puts shower filters through rigorous testing and procedures to ensure they are deemed fit to filtrate the impurities it says it will. If a company meets these expectations, it will receive a stamp of approval - this is what you want to look out for.

5

Get One That's Easy to Install

Get One That's Easy to Install

Filters will need to be changed regularly - probably every six months or so, so you want to make sure that this isn't a job that you need a plumber for. Thankfully, most cartridges and shower filters these days are easy enough to be fitted by yourself in less than half an hour.

As in-line filters are essentially cartridges that you attach to the shower arm, these are easy to replace. The problem comes with showerheads. If you're buying a showerhead filter, make sure the company also produce replacement cartridges and check the price of these too. You don't want to fall into the trap of buying a bargain showerhead only to realise the replacement cartridges cost an arm and a leg!

Our No.1 With 15 Filtration Stages and 2 Cartridges

The 15-Stage Shower Filter from Aquahomegroup is one of the most popular on the market, and for a good reason. As the name suggests, the filter includes a whopping 15 filtration stages providing one of the most comprehensive systems available.

If this doesn't clean your water, then we don't know what will! Within the 15 stages are vitamin C ceramic balls, KDF-55, calcium sulfite and a granulated activated coconut filter, amongst many others. Put together, these promise to inhibit the growth of scale, algae, fungi and mould, blocking bacteria, pesticides and chlorine, and possibly any impurity in your water. The pack also includes two cartridges.

Another bestseller from Amazon, this three-stage filtration system from Aquabliss contains KDF-55, calcium sulfite and activated carbon filters which together aim to remove sediment, dust, chlorine, heavy metals and other impurities from your water.

It's quick and straightforward to install, requiring no additional tools and just a few minutes of your time. Installed correctly, this product shouldn't interfere with your water pressure but will increase the overall quality of water - even if you're pumping both hot and cold through the system.

Aquasana is one of the big names in the water filtration industry, and this model is one of its best. It might be a little on the pricey side, but we deem it most definitely worthy. The system has been certified and approved for both its safety and effectiveness at filtering, so you know this is one you can rely on.

Containing a two filter stage system of KDF-55 and coconut shell carbon, this system is effective against eliminating chlorine, hydrogen sulfide, pesticides, herbicides, VOCs, lead and other heavy metals. The filter needs to be changed every six months and can easily be installed by yourself.

4 Stage Filtration System With Vitamin C

The water filtration system from Dighealth is one of our favourites due to its appealing design. Many shower filters are not much to look at, but this one provides an interesting feature in the bathroom, as you can physically see the filtration in process!

The multiple filtration system contains vitamin C in the form of a lemon block which adds a pleasant, refreshing scent to your shower without being too overpowering. The filter includes a universal blend of minerals, including tourmaline, calcium sulfite and negative ion balls. A very easy-to-install product that promises to make your water feel much, much softer.

2 Filtration Levels and 5 Spray Settings

Culligan is another well-known brand in the water filtration industry, recognised for its high-quality products and excellent customer service. This particular product is another durable, high-quality find, even if the model is a little old by now.

Taking a measly 10 minutes to install, it's straightforward and only needs a cartridge replacement every six months - it even comes with a two-year warranty. The filtration system decreases chlorine, scale, mould and bacteria and helps improve the smell and taste of your water. The rubber nozzle also includes five spray settings and is very easy to clean.

A Cheap and Cheerful Showerhead With Mineral Balls

If you're looking for an excellent, affordable option, look no further than this showerhead from Magic Home. At just over ten quid, you really can't grumble! The pack includes a powerful shower head that is super easy to install and has three different settings - a massage setting to release those tight knots, a rain setting for a relaxing spa feel and a jet setting for a powerful blast.

The filtration system uses mineral balls to soften the water and rid it of any impurities, maintaining the pH balance of the water, leaving you with healthier skin, hair and nails. The downside? This only removes chlorine and fluoride - not the long list of impurities you get with other options.

Durable and Long-Lasting In-Line Shower Filter

This shower filter from Berkey may not be one of the most aesthetically pleasing around, but it gets the job done. The system is compatible with most shower head types and only needs to be replaced every year, which is excellent - just don't forget!

Although Berkey is a reputable company in water filtration, this is quite expensive, considering it only comes with one filter and no shower head. The reviews, however, do back up its claims of clearing the smell and taste of chlorine straight away and inhibiting the growth of scale, mould, fungi, algae and bacteria.

Turning Chlorine to Chloride With This Certified Filter

The handheld water shower head filter from Sprite is excellent if you want an entirely new showerhead, and the Sprite filters are supposedly some of the best around. Completely certified, you can rest assured that it does its job eliminating bacteria, mould and impurities in your water

The KDF-55 filtration system uses copper and zinc to make an ionic exchange to the chlorine, turning it to chloride, which doesn't carry any of the harmful properties of chlorine. The filtration system also rids your water of metals such as lead and mercury, making for a much cleaner shower.

Affordable Filter System With a Minimalist Feel

The Luxury Filtered Shower Head from Pureaction is a great, affordable option if you're looking for a complete package. Unlike many filtered showerheads, this one is particularly pleasing to the eye, with a nice minimalist feel that is much less bulky than the industry standard and will fit nicely in any bathroom.

The filtration system runs through the head, so there's no additional piece hanging down. The head contains three settings, massage, rain and combo, so you can take your pick. However, the filtration system is pretty basic, with just one system to remove chlorine and fluoride and reduce the skin's pH balance.

A Chrome Shower Filter With 3 Settings

With a shiny chrome finish, this water filter head from Rainsworth is excellent if you're after a simplistic bathroom look. Some customers have said that it does look a little cheap, but what do you expect for just over 30 quid?

The showerhead allows for three different settings - rainfall, massage and jet - and with a nifty button on the handle, it's easy to transit between each one. This product only uses one filtration system, however, so it's not that comprehensive and it doesn't look like there are any certifications to back up its claims.

Summary

We hope that you've found this guide useful and that it's set you up with everything you need to know to shop for your perfect shower filter. Your health, skin and hair will thank you when you're finally washing it with the clean, clear water it deserves!
