Presses work by applying even pressure to the flower, using plates made from a heavy material (typically wood or metal). Between the plates, paper is used to absorb excess moisture.
Most presses have an extra layer of ceramic or wood on top of the plates, as well as screws or clips to ensure that everything stays in place and that no light or moisture reaches the flower.
The first consideration to make is whether you'd prefer a classic wooden press or a plastic variety. Aside from the way they look, the main difference between the two is the speed in which they press your blooms, so think about which appeals more – kids, for example, would probably want something with near-instant results.
Wooden presses usually take around 8-10 hours to fully preserve your blooms, although some flowers can take a few weeks to fully dry out. They’re typically held together by bolts with wingnuts or clips, to make sure that the maximum amount of pressure is applied.
They may look more functional than beautiful, and of course, they require you to have a microwave, but using this type of press involves zapping the flowers for only around 30 seconds at a time, so it’s an incredibly quick method. Perfect for crafternoons with either kids or adults when time is of the essence!
However, you might need something a bit more portable if you'd like to take your press out with you to collect and forage as you explore the great outdoors. If this is the case, look for a compact-sized press that can easily fit into a bag.
You should also avoid presses with loose parts if you're planning on crafting with kids, as they could be a safety hazard. It's also wise to make sure children are supervised when using their press.
Since everything is included, these kits are good value for money, and also make great gifts for friends or family. For children, you can also look out for fun crafting extras like stickers and charms, as well as items to attach their pressed flowers to such as bookmarks or notebooks.

This is a great kit for creative and craft-loving adults, teens, and kids alike, and as you'd expect from the brand, everything is made from really good quality materials. Even the press itself is beautifully decorated – perfect for displaying on a shelf or gifting to a lucky friend.
Although it doesn’t come with any extra accessories, this is a really high-quality press made with premium basswood and sturdy brass wingnuts and screws. The pretty flower design on its top can be personalised with your own splash of paint or left plain.
Made from sustainable bamboo and bioplastic with adjustable, easy-turn bolts, this kit is simple for younger ones to use and will teach them about nature and art all at once. This would be a great choice for families who often spend time exploring their local area, or even just as an at-home activity using items from your own garden.
Plus, it’s compact and super light, so it won’t weigh your kids down on their flower-picking adventures. On the downside, this is another very simple kit with only the press and paper included, so it does seem quite pricey considering it doesn’t have any extra accessories.
Changing the pressing paper regularly can prevent flowers from soaking up any moisture from the previous batch that you pressed, too. Similarly, you should wash the cloth liners in microwaveable presses often too, as they can retain moisture and pollen from flowers.
Feeling inspired to get crafty? DIY activity kits aren't just for kids – these days there are all sorts of ways you can create your very own homemade treasures, from canvas paintings to adorn your walls to beautiful candles to give as gifts.
