If you’re totally new to cross-stitch and embroidery, there are a few things that you should consider when shopping. Generally, kits that are designed for beginners are well thought out and not too complicated, but it's always good to know what to look for. Let’s get stuck in!
Cross-stitch and embroidery both involve sewing, but they differ in terms of their approach. Here, we'll explain more about each of them, to help you decide which one will suit you better.
Cross-stitch patterns are made up of "X" shaped stitches (literally cross stitches!) which form pictures and letters when sewn in the set order.
This type of craft is great if you’re totally new to sewing, as the stitch types never change so it’s easy to pick up. It’s not quite as creative as embroidery, but its repetitive nature is rather calming and relaxing.
If you’ve got a bit more confidence or if the repetitive nature of cross-stitch doesn’t appeal to you, then why not try embroidery? It'll teach you various new stitches that will allow you to create different effects and shapes on the fabric.
Embroidery tends to look more realistic than cross-stitch sewing as it's less methodical. Plus, you can experiment with different colours and express yourself creatively.
There are certain pieces of equipment that will make it easier to create beautiful work with your own two hands. Here are some items you should keep an eye out for that might be included in your kit.
This might seem obvious, but the first thing you should check is that the kit includes all of the thread you need to finish the pattern. There should be enough of each colour and, ideally, the threads should come already sorted into their colours.
Depending on how fine the detail included is, some patterns may require you to split thicker pieces of thread into different numbers of strands to use - your pattern should provide the exact information on this.
As you should be using a needle appropriate to the detail of the stitching, most kits come with one or more needles in exactly the right size for the pattern.
A lot of kits also include a needle threading tool, which can save you loads of time and stress when working with very fine thread strands and small needles - it makes a super fiddly job much quicker!
A hoop can make life so much easier! It holds the fabric really taut, meaning that you can concentrate on sewing rather than keeping the pattern still. Simply slot the fabric you’re working on in-between the two hoop parts and then tighten the outer hoop - this will clamp the fabric in place and keep it secure.
The size of the hoop you should use will vary depending on the size of the piece you’re working on and also what you’re comfortable holding. Of course, if a kit includes a hoop then it'll be the right size for that specific project, but sadly not all kits contain hoops!
You might think you can get away with using regular household scissors for cutting threads and strands - you'd unfortunately be wrong!
Specialist embroidery scissors are smaller and finer, so they not only make trimming easier but they provide a cleaner cut. This means it'll be simpler to thread your needle, plus the ends are much less likely to fray and unravel.
Hence, you should definitely check whether embroidery scissors are provided in your kit otherwise you'll have to buy them separately!
When it comes to the size of a cross-stitch or embroidery project, beginners should always start small. After all, when you're new to a craft, something too big or too detailed can make you feel overwhelmed and unmotivated to do it. Later on, when you're feeling more confident, you can then work up to doing larger and more complicated pieces.
You should also consider the amount of time you’re likely to dedicate to your new hobby - this will help you to gauge whether a particular kit will be suitable for you. To give you a good idea of the size of a project, we'll mention its dimensions in the specification tables below each product review.
Cross-stitch often uses a special fabric called aida cloth as its base. Aida cloth is woven in a certain way that creates a clearly visible grid of squares with holes for you to stitch an "X" shape onto. This makes it much easier for you to count your stitches and to follow the pattern chart.
Embroidery, on the other hand, requires a fabric with a much tighter weave. Plain fabrics such as cotton, which have a more close-knit texture, are therefore perfect for this type of sewing.
Chart patterns, which are printed grids where each square on the grid represents a single stitch, are usually provided with cross-stitch kits. They also have symbols for the different colours to help you understand where to change threads.
Chart patterns are generally logical and easy to follow, but you’ll need to make sure you mark where you leave off at the end of a sewing session so you can easily carry on the next time without any mistakes.
Some cross-stitch and a lot of embroidery patterns come printed directly onto the fabric instead, which makes things even easier to follow. Unless otherwise stated in the pattern, you then simply refer to the image of the completed work to pick the right thread colours - or you can even pick out your own ones if you're feeling creative!

When it comes to cross-stitch kits, Bothy Threads is probably the best-known brand - we just had to include them in our list! The quality of their kits is second to none with comprehensive and easy to read patterns, plus their top-notch threads won't ever snap or fray.
We love that this kit has been named "The Diet Starts Tomorrow" and features an adorable image of a hamster gnawing on a biscuit. It's a reasonable-sized project that won't take you too long but will still challenge your brain. For all of these reasons, we've chosen it as our number 1!
This "Rural Scene" set of 3 embroidery kits is really unusual but totally charming, plus it has a good range of different stitches for you to learn. The designs look really professional once finished, and as with some of our other recommendations, the ink on the pattern washes away in cold water so that you're left with a neat-looking image.
The kit also includes a diagram showing you how to do the different stitches, which is a really useful touch, and the pattern is easy to follow. Once again, however, this kit only includes one hoop so you may need to buy some more if you plan to work on more than one design at the same time.
This kit from Jecanori includes 3 different embroidery designs, all with a botanical theme, making it very on trend right now. The soft green and burnt orange shades are sophisticated and the floral patterns will look gorgeous on a plain white wall when framed.
Equipment-wise, this kit contains everything you need, so you'll be good to go as soon as it arrives! The only reason it's not higher in our ranking is that only one hoop is provided - this isn't much use if you want to work on all 3 designs simultaneously.
Dog lovers will go crazy for this stunning Springer Spaniel design! There are plenty of bold, beautiful colours used and YEPLIN promises that the vibrant threads won't fade over time. At 44cm in size, this project will be a decent challenge without being majorly daunting.
While the printed pattern on the fabric is useful, the instructions can sadly be difficult to understand - if you're totally new to cross-stitch you may need to seek extra guidance. Nevertheless, this is a good-quality kit that's worth investing time into!
This giraffe design is just so cute and colourful, it's impossible to resist! The pattern is printed on the fabric and like some of our other recommendations, it has ink that dissolves in water, leaving you with an amazing piece of art to hang on your wall!
Although it's suitable for beginners, this is quite a big project that's bound to be time-consuming. We think it's worth the effort though - it'll look fab framed and would make a brilliant gift too!
This kit includes 4 different designs for you to choose from - the varying designs and sizes will keep you occupied until you're an embroidery master! The ink that the patterns are printed with dissolves in water, so you can run your finished projects under a tap to remove all traces of the ink, leaving your embroidery looking totally clean.
The downsides to this product are that the plastic hoops aren't very sturdy and the printed patterns are quite faint, so be prepared to get up close and personal with them while stitching!
The effect that the embroidery on this sea-themed kit creates is beautiful - it almost looks almost like a painting! The colours used are bold and very atmospheric, and the kit includes everything you need plus a couple of extra bits (like a thimble) to help you on your first steps into embroidery.
As this is a more detailed design, it may take you longer than you expect to complete - be aware of this if you struggle with keeping yourself motivated. It's definitely worth the effort though!
Everyone loves the cute chubby tabby that is Pusheen, and this mini kit with two cross-stitch patterns is totally adorable! They're really small in size and simple to follow, so even absolute beginners should be able to pull them off with ease.
While the small size means these patterns shouldn't take long to finish, the pattern charts are also pretty tiny so you may need some patience to try and work them out. In addition, some of the colours are very similar, which makes it tricky to differentiate between them. For the low price though, this is a lovely little kit that's sure to appeal to Pusheen fans!
This kit is a good size if you want to do a spot of casual crafting but don't want to make a huge commitment. There are a range of different stitches involved, so you can expand your sewing repertoire whilst making something pretty!
This kit includes all the extras you're likely to need, including a suitably-sized hoop and some neat embroidery scissors. This isn't the highest quality kit around, as the plastic hoop is rather flimsy, but it's easy to follow and has attractive results.
This kit from YEPLINS has a super cute owl design in bright colours like pink, blue, and purple that we reckon kids will love. The pattern is printed directly on to the fabric and can then be removed by soaking the finished work in water - easy peasy!
Unfortunately, this kit only comes with the bare minimum in terms of equipment, so investing in additional equipment such as a hoop and a needle threader might make completing the cross-stitch more enjoyable. Still, it's not a bad kit for the price!
Are you itching to try a new hobby and find your next big passion? We've got some fantastic crafty recommendations that will help you to relax and get away from it all, whilst also being productive. Check out the links below!
