How to Choose a Cider in the UK – Buying Guide

The best ciders are said to achieve the optimum balance of acidity, bitterness and sweetness, but flavour preferences can vary from person to person. To begin, we’ll take a look at the factors that influence the taste and quality of a cider so you can judge them alongside your own inclinations.
1

Dry or Sweet? Sparkling or Flat? Think About the Taste (And Sugar Content) You’d Prefer

Dry or Sweet? Sparkling or Flat? Think About the Taste (And Sugar Content) You’d Prefer
Cider is ranked from dry to sweet, with several stages in between such as semi-sweet and off-dry, determined by the apples used and the fermentation process. Dry cider has been fermented for longer, so most of the sugars have been converted to alcohol. Sweet ciders can get their taste from added sugar, sweeteners or apple concentrate, or a slower fermentation.

Whilst sweeter ciders appeal to the many as they're easier to drink and taste like soft drink, they do have higher sugar content, so may not be recommended for those watching their sugar or calorie intake. On the other hand of the spectrum, ciders classed as scrumpy are made with no added sugars, and are flat instead of fizzy, which is another factor to consider when choosing your tipple.

If you’re not sure which you might like the best in terms of taste, think about the kind of wine or other drinks you like – do you like dry or sweet white wine? Would you order a tonic water or a lemonade, a sparkling lager or a traditional ale? And if you’re still feeling a bit indecisive, try picking a cider that falls somewhere in the middle to begin with, and go from there.

2

Serious Cider Drinkers Will Want to Choose Those With a High Apple Juice Content

Serious Cider Drinkers Will Want to Choose Those With a High Apple Juice Content
UK law states that to be officially classed as a cider, the product in question must contain at least 35% apple juice, so at least you know you’re getting this as the minimum when you buy any cider. The British organisation CAMRA (The Campaign for Real Ale), however, proclaim that a minimum of 90% juice denotes a true, quality cider, which in turn does make for a better, fully-flavoured taste.

Not many brands will list the percentage on the bottle or can, but some may do on their website. Better ciders will have only some sugar, water and something to keep them fresh (usually a sulphite or two) added, whereas most cheaper options will have some added concentrates, flavourings and syrups to bulk out the content.

So, if you’re serious about your booze you may want to err towards a cider that lists the apple juice content, and a high one at that.

3

Note the Alcohol Percentage (Before You Have One Too Many!)

Note the Alcohol Percentage (Before You Have One Too Many!)
On average, ciders in the UK contain an alcohol content of 3-5% ABV (alcohol by volume) but some traditional, English-made varieties can reach a potent 8-12%. Therefore, before you accidentally end up more squiffy than you’d anticipated after a few innocent sips, we’d recommend checking out the ABV. On the other hand, some prefer the boldness of a strong drink, so it’s entirely up to you.

There are more and more companies producing low or no alcohol ciders too, so if you’d like a few glasses of the good stuff without the headache, look for those with 2, 1 or 0% ABV.

4

Choosing Between Glass Bottle and Aluminium Can – Is There a Difference?

Choosing Between Glass Bottle and Aluminium Can – Is There a Difference?
Most of us already know if we do or don’t like the taste, or mouthfeel, of drinking out of certain vestibules, and whether we think it affects the flavour. But are there some other pros and cons of each?

Some experts say that cans are the way forward, as flavour-changing UV light exposure cannot penetrate through the container as easily as it can glass. Environmentally, cans require quite a lot of energy to be recycled, but are lighter in freight, and can be recycled over and over. Also, some people say cans can feel unpleasant on the mouth and teeth.

Glass, however, will keep your cider chilled for longer, making it a better choice for a humid day out without a fridge or cooler in the vicinity. You also won’t get the tinny, metallic profile that can come through with canned drinks. In terms of its eco-friendliness, glass has a lower carbon footprint than cans in its production, but not its recycling process. Some food for thought!

Flavoured or Pear Ciders are an Option for Something Different

Flavoured or Pear Ciders are an Option for Something Different
If you’ve been to any supermarket or pub in the last decade, you’ll know that fruity or flavoured ciders are still very much all the rage. Those who wouldn’t dream of letting anything other than a proper, straight-up apple cider pass their lips can look away now, but these almost cocktail-like sparkling tipples can earn a place in your fridge if you’re open to it.

Nowadays ciders are being flavoured or blended with anything from citrus fruits to kiwis or berries, so whether you’re intrigued to try something new or have a penchant for a sweeter alcoholic treat, you’ll definitely be able to find something to satisfy. There’s also no denying that they’re refreshing, easy to drink, and can add a summery vibe to even the rainiest barbecue.

Do bear in mind though that they are usually pretty sugary, so they can add a lot to your daily intake if you have more than one or two. If this is a concern but you still want to branch out or change up your regular plonk, you could always try a perry, which is a cider made from pear juice or a mix of pear and apple.

Organic Cider Heaven in Every Sip

Aside from the beautiful label design, there are many things to love about this cider. It’s organically produced, resulting not only in a better flavour but a kinder life for the surrounding wildlife, and has a honey-oak-sweet flavour profile with a rich aroma and a well balanced fruity aftertaste.

Crafted with all the love and expertise of Westons’ fifth-generation makers, this easy-drinker is complex but not too strong and would complement any occasion. Although it warrants no excuse if you feel like popping one open for no particular reason!

Summer Freshness in a Can

These quirky cans perfectly combine tried and tested traditional cider making methods with modern processes, and the result is certainly a recipe for success.

Utilising a mixture of tart and crisp apples that provide an instant hit of freshness, this is a summery cider to pack up for a day at the park, the beach or just your back garden. We highly recommend it for those who want an easy-to-drink, not-too-strong sipper without the added flavours or sweetness often found in ciders of that ilk.

A Trio of Craft Ciders for Newbies

Don’t worry, we’re not saying you have to only buy this set for someone else, in fact, it would be the ideal gift to yourself to test the waters of the real cider world. Hailing from the West Country, artisan company Severn Cider use 99.9% whole juice, never concentrates or additives, and they never spray their fruit with pesticides.

This set consists of two ciders, one “just right” sweet and one crisp, full-flavoured dry, and a sparkling and delicate perry, all of which have won several gold taste awards. They’re crafty but enjoyable enough for regular cider drinkers. Plus, the bottle design and labelling are undeniably cool.

Real Cider for the Discerning Drinker

Discerning drinkers, lovers of real ale and cider: this one is for you – only you don’t have to head to a rural farm shop to get your craft fix. Made with 100% apple juice, and winner of awards, it’s UK made in Nottinghamshire by a passionate family company.

This pack has two of the brand’s Premium Sparkling variety, filtered for a crisp, clear and distinctive taste with a sweet start and dry finish, and and two Medium Still, traditional in colour and flavour and slightly cloudy with a heady apple scent. Delicious!

Thatchers 5. Thatchers Vintage CiderPack of 6

A Rich Oak Aged Medium Dry

If a cider’s heritage is a family-owned company in Somerset, you know it’s going to be good. Deep in flavour and with a subtle richness from the 100-year-old oak barrel ageing process, Thatcher’s Vintage is made with bittersweet apples and is a balanced medium dry.

Don’t be put off by the words “vintage” and “aged”, if you’re looking for a bit of summertime sparkle, as it’s still refreshing and well rounded, and would also be a good one to cook with or pair with a Sunday lunch.

Westons 6. Westons Henry Vintage Cider

A Strong and Robust Vintage for Hardier Drinkers

Another cider from Westons has made our list, but this one should come with a warning! Weighing in at a punchy 8.2% ABV, it’s definitely suited to the seasoned cider drinkers or those content with having just one. Which is a shame really, as it’s tasty enough to warrant cracking open another.

Rich, smooth and mellow, it’s been crafted with the best of Britain’s apples, and matured for 6 months in oak barrels for a medium-bodied, crisp but earthy flavour.
No.7

Stowford Press 7. Stowford Press Low Alcohol CiderPack of 12

£14.50

(Almost) Alcohol-Free but Equally Tasty

With an alcohol content of no more than 0.5%, feel free to enjoy several of these hangover free, and with half the calories of a boozy cider. There are no artificial sweeteners added (only real sugar) so you don’t get the fake taste common in alcohol-free drinks, either.

It is quite light due to the low alcohol, but is not without depth of flavour as it’s still made with all the care of the brand’s other ciders. And in this case, it’s matured in oak vats. Served ice cold, it’s enough to fool us!
No.8

Old Mout 8. Old Mout Kiwi & Lime CiderPack of 10

£8.00

Fruity and Very Easy to Drink Cans

Using eating apples (mainly Braeburns) grown locally to their sunny New Zealand cidery, Old Mout’s zesty citrus and tropical kiwi cider has a lovely balance of tangy sharpness and drinkable sweetness. If you’re an old-school cider drinker, though, this is probably going to be too sugary for you, although they don’t add any artificial sweeteners.

For everyone else, you’ll find them to be very easy to drink (almost too easy!) especially with ice and a slice of lime, and great value to boot.

Old-Fashioned Dry Cider With a Kick

UK company Westons say they are committed to using 100% pressed apple juice in their many cider varieties, including this old-fashioned Old Rosie. It’s dry, light and crisp, and as well as a long fermentation process it’s left unfiltered for a truly vintage oaky, smoky flavour.

It is slightly sparkling which makes it a tad more refreshing than some other scrumpy-style ciders, but it’s perhaps not the best pick for a leisurely afternoon of drinking as it’s got quite the alcoholic kick!

Rekorderlig10. Rekorderlig Botanicals Rhubarb, Lemon and Mint CiderPack of 4

Refreshing, Summery and Light

Rekorderlig have branched out a bit with their new botanicals range, and the result is this light, quenching and zingy pear cider with added mint, rhubarb and lemon flavours, and a nice cleansing aftertaste.

Whilst it is definitely on the sweeter side, it does have a much less overbearing sweetness than most flavoured ciders and is made with pure spring water. The smaller sized bottles mean it won’t get too warm by the time you get halfway through, too.
