The appeal of portable toilets dramatically increased during lockdown due to Covid rules closing campsite facilities and public toilets. Having a portable toilet for camping stops the dreaded midnight toilet run and (if compact enough) can be taken on day trips, so excursions don't need to be planned around the availability of public toilet facilities. They can also be invaluable to those with mobility issues.
Our buying guide looks into everything you need to know, including the dimensions, max user weight, capacity, comfort, ease of emptying and any flush mechanism involved, so that you can find a portable loo to suit you. We've also included a list of the 10 best portable toilets available in the UK to buy from Amazon, including stand-alone facilities and loos with bags, along with their prices and which chemicals you'll need to operate them.

Pink toilet fluid would be added to water in the flushing tank and blue toilet fluid to the waste tank. Once full, the waste tank needs emptying into a designated chemical toilet disposal area (if you have used chemicals) or into a regular toilet if no chemical additions are present.
Bucket toilets are simply a bucket with a toilet seat over the top. They can be disguised to look more like a regular toilet or made to be extremely portable with a folding design. If you're using it solely for urine, the bucket can be simply rinsed out after use. However, if they're used for solid waste, the bucket needs to be lined with a plastic bag.
Some bucket toilets come with a lid to minimise smells, whereas some come with absorbent pads to place in the base of the lining bag to soak up the liquid. If used with liquid-absorbing pads or powder-to-gel crystals, the bags can be added to regular outdoor waste bins.
Individuals and couples will find that a 10-litre tank could last them a weekend trip away, meaning the portable toilet will only need emptying just before leaving. However, a family of four or more should choose a 20-litre capacity tank - you don't want to be emptying your chemical toilet in the dark because you've been filling up more quickly than expected!
Lidded bucket toilets with a 5-litre capacity are fine for urine collection overnight for a family of four or more, whereas couples and individuals could get away with a 1-litre lidded bucket toilet for overnight collection. Capacity is less important if opting for an open bucket/bagged toilet, as these will need emptying after each use - especially if you want to avoid unpleasant smells!
Consider a recommended roof box for your car, so you can pack a larger portable toilet.

Flushable portable toilets will require two types of chemicals if you intend to use chemicals to reduce smells and break down waste. The pink fluid is needed for the flushing tank and the blue fluid for the waste tank. There are branded versions of the chemicals available (for example, Thetford), plus other generic versions, which will, more or less, do the same thing.
Bucket and bag-type portable toilets will require bags to catch the waste. These bags usually contain a liquid-absorbing powder or an absorbent pad at the base of the bag, which can be safely disposed of in general waste bins. A more cost-effective option is using hole-free bags (such as pedal bin liners) with a budget-brand baby's nappy placed within to soak up the waste!

As you would expect from such a trusted brand, removing the waste tank, emptying it and cleaning it are all straightforward procedures. The flush system is also a simple syringe pump, and there is a handy red-green indicator to avoid overfilling. What more could you need?
Next up, we have a basic yet user-friendly portable toilet in that it's a simple bucket designed to look like a regular loo. Both the inner and outer toilets feature closable lids, and the internal bucket also has a handle - there is even a toilet roll holder on the side!
Thanks to its large footprint, the design is sturdy and reliable, posing no risk of tipping over. The waste bucket has the capacity of 5-litres, although we wouldn't recommend filling it to the brim as it might be quite tricky to empty! Hillington handily sells a 'privacy tent' to house the loo, if you so fancy.
Thetford's luxury, virtually full-size portable toilet has an impressive 21-litre waste capacity and a battery-powered electric flush. This is the home-from-home option for camping or the dignified option for those struggling to access their bathroom toilet via stairs.
There are also water-level indicators on both the waste water and flushing water tanks, and, coming from such a reputable brand that sells spare parts, your mind can remain at ease knowing that you'll be covered if anything goes wrong.
Dometic is well-known for producing high-quality appliances for boats, motorhomes and caravans, and their portable toilet for smaller motorhomes and tents doesn't disappoint. We particularly love the extra-long, pivoting spout on the waste tank that assists with splash-free emptying.
The movable parts - the lid, seat, flush and waste spout- are all robustly made, yet if you have an issue with breakages, spare parts are available to order. It's worth noting that the powerful push button flush is perfect for those with wrist or dexterity issues.
The larger portable toilet in the Dometic range, the Sanipottie 966, has a full-size lid and seat, meaning you can expect a comfortable user experience. The reliability of choosing a trusted brand includes the availability of spare parts, should a valve or moving piece need replacing.
The one-piece tank design prevents leaks, and the double sealed valve ensures no odours if the contents are left in situ for a few days. But don't worry, the generous 19-litre waste capacity certainly won't need emptying daily.
An affordably priced portable toilet with a sturdy design, a good seat height of 41 cm and a generously-sized seat. - so much so that it can hold the weight of up to 23 stone. The capacity of the waste tank is a very respectable 20-litres, and the water tank capacity supports 50 flushes.
However, the emptying procedure isn't as smooth as the Thetford toilets, and there are no spare parts available to purchase should a component fail. That said, it is a very reasonable price, so if you're on a budget, this is a great buy.
This portable toilet is well-built and secure and the heaviest on our list at 6 kg when empty. The full-size seat can hold up to 20-stone in user weight and sits at a very comfortable 43 cm high.
The locking system which attaches the top unit to the base tank is an intuitive, easy to use set-up. However, there isn't the option to buy spare parts for this portable toilet, so take that into consideration when making your selection.
This one is clearly just a bucket with a toilet seat on top - a no-frills option that does the job simply and effectively! That said, the hinged lid helps contain the contents, and if the toilet is used for urine only, the bucket can be easily washed out after use. For any solids, however, a liner bag is most definitely needed.
The toilet seat has been known to be tricky to attach and remove, but reviewers have confirmed that this issue reduces over time. It may be a little frustrating at first, especially considering you need to remove the seat to empty it, but if you want a cheap, basic option, this should do you nicely.
This portable toilet in subtle forest green was initially designed for fishermen but has since become a bit more mainstream. Impressively, it folds down to a 5 cm high disk-in-a-bag when not in use and comes with a discrete carry bag. You can also buy a separate lid if you want to leave this toilet set up in the corner of a tent.
Amazingly it can support the weight of up to 21 stone, thanks to the concealed steel axis frame, which securely clicks together, ensuring it won't collapse during use. At 25 cm high, it is only half the height of a standard bucket, so using it more often than occasionally probably isn't going to be done by many.
