How to Choose a Bike Cover in the UK - Buying Guide

While buying a bike cover might seem like a straightforward enough prospect, it still pays to know what is common in the best of them. We've investigated material, size and a few other defining features to help you make the final decision on your priceless bike's new shelter.

1

Get to Know Which Indicators Determine the Weatherproofing Prowess of Each Cover

Material, thread and denier count and PU coatings are important considerations when looking at bike covers. These will help you to understand how effective the cover will be in standing up to the elements.

Covers Made of Nylon and Polyester Are Guaranteed to Be Water-Resistant

Covers Made of Nylon and Polyester Are Guaranteed to Be Water-Resistant

Whether from the sun, rain, snow, dust or anything else, one of the main jobs for any bike cover is to protect your bike from the elements. It makes sense, then, that nylon and polyester are the most frequently-used materials for covers as they both provide water-resistance.

However, if we're getting down to the nitty-gritty of which material edges out the other, it's a tried and tested decision that polyester takes the waterproofing crown. While nylon has a 4% moisture regain, polyester has a mere 0.4%, meaning it absorbs less water.

Nylon is commonly regarded as being stronger and stretchier than polyester, so although it loses out on the water-resistance front, it gains points in these two categories. This makes deciding on material a little tough, but don't worry – we'll tell you how to get the best of both below.

Oxford Fabric Combines Polyester and Nylon for Increased Strength and Elasticity

While there's nothing wrong with standard polyester and nylon for the use of bike covers, it's oxford fabric that is now reigning supreme on the material front. Oxford fabric can be blended polyester and nylon or 100% polyester, woven in a particular way in order to create a premium fabric perfect for outdoor products.

Oxford fabric is recommended for its strong and durable finish, having increased elasticity, breathability, texture and corrosion- and water-resistance, while also benefiting from a thicker overall design. In short, it's the material of choice for almost all premium bike covers today, although, understandably, it does come with a bigger price tag.

Thread and Denier Counts Are Good Indicators of Durability and Water-Resistance

Thread and Denier Counts Are Good Indicators of Durability and Water-Resistance

Bike covers are commonly referenced by their thread or denier count, both of which refer to the thickness of the stitching used in construction. Typical thread and denier counts for covers are 190 and 210, with 210 being a more robust, heavy-duty count

To keep it simple yet informative when separating thread and denier count, it really comes down to the way in which the material has been stitched. If polyester or nylon is referenced by its thread count, that indicates the fabric has been woven, while denier fabric is knitted.

This difference ultimately equates to a bike cover with 190T being of a lighter, less dense material than a 190D. This is because denier is a stronger form of stitching that gives the fabric a tightly knit construction, making it more durable and water-resistant.

PU and UV Coatings Give a Bike Cover Increased Water and Sun Protection

PU and UV Coatings Give a Bike Cover Increased Water and Sun Protection

While nylon and polyester have water-resistance stitched into their very fabric, you certainly can't have too much of it. That's why some brands have coated their cover's fabric in polyurethane (PU) to give it even greater resistance to the wet stuff.

This PU coating also gives the bike cover increased UV protection, ensuring the sun's harmful rays will be repelled away from your bike. This anti-UV coating will also give the cover itself greater longevity as a product, as it will work to reduce sun damage and deterioration.

Bike Covers Can Be Made to Fit 1, 2 or 3 Bikes

Where there's one bike, there are usually more bikes. Whether you've got an entire family of cycle-crazed kids itching to tear up the paths and trails or you yourself own a few different styles, there's a bike cover to suit all levels of cycle enthusiasm.

You'll have a choice between products that cater for 1, 2 or 3 bikes respectively. The larger covers will still come with all the bells and whistles you'd expect from a single bike cover; the only noticeable difference is the width and possibly height added to accommodate the extra members.

Regardless of how many bikes you have, it's important to cross-correlate the dimensions with your bike's measurements – they come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, after all. As Cinderella knows very well, the cover must fit just like the slipper did.

3

Look for Clever Extra Features to Keep Your Bike Safe and Secure Under the Cover

As we already know, every bike cover's main objective is to keep your bike secure and protected. However, there are a few cleverly-integrated features to look out for that will help to put your mind and bikes at ease.

Lock Holes Prove Very Handy in Keeping Your Bike Secure and the Cover On

Lock Holes Prove Very Handy in Keeping Your Bike Secure and the Cover On

Lock holes generally come in the form of two anti-rust metal eyelets for you to slide a chain or D-lock through. Although simple, they benefit from being a double act of sorts – first and foremost, they enable you to lock your bike securely when not in use, but they also prevent the cover from coming loose during strong winds.

The lock acts as a safeguard against extreme weather events, for which the UK is certainly not adverse to. While lock holes are starting to become the standard in premium bike covers, the more basic covers are less likely to come equipped with this neat little feature.

Reflective Loops Help to Position a Bike Cover While Keeping an Eye at Night

Reflective loops are another two-for-one feature. Not only do they help you to fit and remove your bike cover, but they also give the bike cover a reflective glow in the dead of night.

This reflective glow could be the difference in dodging unwanted bumps from other cyclists, motorbikes and even cars. Seeing as just about every bike cover on the market is black, these little reflective ears can send out reflective shimmers toward unaware road users. This will hopefully save your pride and joy from being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Buckles and Elastic Ends Will Give Your Cover More Coverage Over Your Bikes

Buckles and Elastic Ends Will Give Your Cover More Coverage Over Your Bikes

A final design feature to keep an eye out for is buckles. These will give your cover a tighter fit on the underside of your bike, which can be a bike-saver when the winds really get going and start blowing.

If a certain bike cover doesn't have a buckle, then it should at least have elastic ends or Velcro to give a slightly less secure but similar result. Any cover that has a buckle, reflective loops and lock holes will be a cover worth your time, as the manufacturer has given your bike a fair and fighting chance.

InnoGear have brought the bike shed down with this most notable of bicycle cover bargains. At under £15, this bike cover is designed for one bike and includes lock holes, a buckle and elastic ends.

The deal really starts to shine through when you take note of the material. With an all-oxford fabric construction that prides itself on a denier count of 210D, this is a quality bike cover for a whole lot less. The stylish curved white and black design give it a striking bit of flair, making sure to stand out from the bike cover crowd.

210D Oxford Fabric Cover With a Bonus Bungee Cord

Though quite a noticeable jump in price, this large bike cover is worth it! It's designed to fit 2 or 3 bikes and comes equipped with a 5-metre bungee cord to eliminate all potential flapping and bike-exposing endeavours brought on by the wind.

Constructed from the super-durable and water-resistant 210D oxford fabric, you can bet your last pound on this cover keeping your bike dry, even in the wettest of weather. It also boasts some very bright yellow reflective loops as well as buckles and elastic ends for security.

Well Priced-Nylon to Snugly Fit Two Bikes

Another bike cover to steal the deal show, this Beeway cover is spacious enough to fit two bikes whilst remaining at a very reasonable price. Lock holes, reflective loops, buckles and elastic ends are all built into the very fabric of this feature-filled cover.

Constructed from 190T nylon that has a PU coating, it also wins valuable points on the water-resistance scale. Although not all the points, of course, as nylon inherently takes on more moisture than polyester and oxford fabric. Overall, this is a good bike cover, though perhaps not a great one.

Inexpensive Feature-Filled Bike Cover in Varying Sizes

Bify have got a little bike cover collection going on with these three varying sizes of cover. With L, XL and XXL available, you should be able to fit 1, 2 or 3 bikes as per your needs. However, it's still best to check the sizing before you start counting those cycling chickens.

The best part about Bify's competitive collection is that they don't differ in price any more than a pound or so, so you could grab a couple if you fancied it. Each cover comes equipped with all the right features, making the only slight hiccups the polyester thread count at 190T and the lack of a PU coating.

Bestselling Nylon Cover With PU Waterproof Coating

This is a popular choice on Amazon from the brand Rockoo that boasts lock holes, reflective loops, one buckle and elastic ends to tuck your bike in. It's designed to more-than-comfortably fit two bikes (with up to 26” frames), which for the price is a bit of a steal.

The only downside to an otherwise delightful deal is that the material is on the lower end of the water-resistance spectrum. Being a nylon construction with a bang-average 190T thread count, this won't be a bike cover to eliminate moisture entirely.

Bright and White to Protect Three of Your Biking Treasures

Saconell have created a striking product with this behemoth bike cover that can comfortably house three of your finest bikes. It's the first cover in this list to feature two buckles, aimed at combating the wild UK weather – and it won't be the last.

The nylon has then been wrapped in a PU coating to give it increased resistance to the weather, which certainly won't go astray with the sadly less-than-desirable nylon thread count of 190T. All of this makes for a cheap 3-bike cover that'll do the job, but not to the same extent as some of the others.

A Plain Jane Cover Designed With One Bike in Mind

BTwin is Decathlon's signature bicycle brand and this is their take on the bike cover for one. It's made from 90% polyester that has been coated in polyurethane (or PU) to give it increased water-resistance

This is another bike cover that is low in price but lacking in the features department with a very plain design. The only highlights to mention are the elastic ends and a Velcro fastening across the middle to give it a good and fighting chance against the elements. Fingers crossed!

Argos Have Flipped the Trend, Opting for a PVC Construction

The Argos Challenge bike cover is made from PVC sheeting, a formable type of plastic that has good waterproofing properties. It's on the smaller side of bike covers, fitting just the one, so be sure to check the sizing if you have a larger-than-usual mountain bike or other type of bike.

This is a very basic bike cover with no lock holes, buckles or reflective handles. It does, however, have elastic ends and Velcro to fasten the cover, which should hopefully sustain any moderate gusts of wind.
