How to Choose a Camping Stove in the UK

Key Points to Consider
  1. Consider Where You're Camping When Choosing Gas Canisters or Liquid Fuel
  2. Ensure the Size, Weight and Portability Suit Your Trip
  3. For an All-in-One Purchase, Look for Included Cookware and Accessories
1

Decide Between Stoves Powered by Traditional Gas Canisters or Liquid Fuel Based on Where You're Camping

Decide Between Stoves Powered by Traditional Gas Canisters or Liquid Fuel Based on Where You're Camping

Go for Gas Canisters if You Need Something Lightweight and Easy to Replace

By far the most common stove power source is gas. The fuel is usually composed of a mix of butane and propane and its container is easily attached to the stove with a screw top. While some of the screwing mechanisms might be different, they all have the same head, which ensures compatibility with any canister.

These canisters are also small and lightweight so they're nice and portable, plus the stoves themselves tend to operate for years without very much maintenance. While gas is a fantastic and ever-popular option, that isn’t to say it’s without fault. For one, their efficiency drops significantly when the temperature drops, and they’re not the most stable either.

Liquid Fuel Is the Best Option for Those Heading Out in Adverse Weather Conditions

Unlike gas, liquid fuel will continue to operate in a wide range of temperatures, even if it drops below freezing! Plus, many of these stoves use what is called ‘multi-fuel’, which allows them to work with both the popular types of fuel.

While liquid can be more expensive initially, they do have a lower consumption, so they're likely to save you money over time. They're also much better from an environmental standpoint as the bottles for these are reusable.

The downside is that many of these liquid fuel stoves have much larger canisters, which means transporting them can be difficult. On top of that, you have the fact that the stoves have many moving parts and mechanics that require oiling and other maintenance.

Are You Backpacking or Car Camping? Make Sure the Size, Weight and Portability Suit Your Adventure

Are You Backpacking or Car Camping? Make Sure the Size, Weight and Portability Suit Your Adventure

Generally, backpacking stoves will be smaller and lighter, so you can expect them to weigh less than 1 kg and their dimensions to be around 10-20 cm in either length, width or depth. These are great if you need to travel light and can be easily transported on foot.

Predictably, car camping stoves will weigh much more – between 3 kg and 10 kg+ – and have dimensions that exceed 50 cm in some cases, so stick to the lower end if you want something a bit more portable. Usually, however, weight won't be much of a problem if you're only parking the car a few meters away from where you'll sleep.

Some larger stoves will even exceed this, and they include multiple burners and grills. This type do take up significantly more space in your vehicle, but they are great for cooking for large groups while on the road!

Look For Included Cookware and Accessories to Save On Expenses

Look For Included Cookware and Accessories to Save On Expenses

Lastly, additional accessories. Looking for a few bonus extras will mean a better value buy and it'll save you time shopping for the items another day.

The most useful extras are arguably cookware items like pots and other containers. While we're sure many of you have these at home already, having one that is especially for the outdoors will be a welcome inclusion.

From there, you have things like storage bags and cartridge stabilisers for the smaller backpacking stoves and windshields for the bigger stoves. In fact, a lot of the larger car camping stoves will have windshields built into the design in the form of their hood. So, while it may not seem an accessory as such, it’s sure to be handy to have around.

An Well-Performing, Fuss-Free Cooker for Both Couples and Family Holidays

While this design might not have any fancy bells and whistles, it's this that makes it an excellent – and affordable – addition to those low-key family camping holidays. With two stoves, you have dual food zones, both of which are protected from any unexpected gusts with the windshield/lid.

The burners work with a fierce 2000 W, so you should have water boiled in a minute or two and food cooked at a respectable speed. The whole thing is easy to maintain with wipeable surfaces and removable, dishwasher-friendly pot supports. All in all, this is a simple yet perfectly-formed cooker that's bound to be a welcome addition to any car camping trip.

With Extra Cleaning Gear to Keep Your Stove in Tip-Top Shape

Here we have another multi-fuel option from the folks over at Leezo. The stove features a windproof plate, so although there is no shield per se, you should have no problems lighting a flame when the breeze picks up at the top of Ben Nevis.

There's also the inclusion of a large bottle that can be filled and taken with you, so you'll have plenty if you're planning on being outdoors for a while. One of the aspects that set this apart from the other stoves, however, is that everything is easy to clean thanks to the inclusion of a cleaning needle and a design that allows you to get into the nitty-gritty.

An Ultra-Portable Option for Trips Into the Wild

This ultra-portable offering from Primus might seem relatively straightforward to the naked eye, but there are some clever inclusions throughout that make this stove one of the best around. Firstly, we like the supports as these provide stability when loading your pans, making the whole experience safer.

From there, there's also a regulated valve that ensures a steady fuel stream, even when the canister is running low. The ignition is provided, but separate, which is handy when it goes on to break and you can leave it at home. A steel pan and wool sleeve (which doubles up as a pot holder) are also included.

A Powerful Single Burner for a Budget Price

This is another well-priced stove from Campingaz, only it's more difficult to quantify as it's not small enough to fit in a backpack nor large enough to cook for lots of people. Therefore, we've decided it is suitable for both groups, with the impetus falling on you as consumers to decide if it's suitable for your needs.

With regards to its features, there is a fuel flow valve for you to determine the strength of the flames, an integrated ignition and a solid case for transporting the stove. Surprisingly, although smaller than many of the dual burners, this does have more power as it operates at a mammoth 2200 W. Be careful not to burn your bacon!

Super Stylish and Ideal for Group Barbecues

OK, we know camping stoves should be all about functionality and practicality. However, if we can sidestep that for a moment, this stove is certainly our favourite in terms of aesthetics, and the designer should give themselves a big pat on the back for that.

With that out of the way, this not only looks good but cooks well too. The large grill area makes it ideal for feeding multiple people when camping or glamping, especially if a BBQ is on the cards. Furthermore, the oak lid doubles up as a nifty chopping board and the leg composition is well regarded for its stability.

For Those Who Can't Live Without Their Morning Cafetiere

It might not be able to whip you up a sizzling steak, but the Jetboil Flash doesn't aim to do that. Instead, this beauty is all about getting the water boiled. And fast. The company claim that it will boil 500 ml in just 100 seconds, so you might even find yourself setting this up in the kitchen when you're at home.

As well as working quickly and efficiently, it has an insulating, colour-changing sleeve that lets you know when the water's hot. This particular version also has an accessory that turns it into a cafetière! While the scope of cooking is limited, boil-in-the-bag or rehydrated meals can still be cooked here, and the base is compatible with other Jetboil pots.

A Dual Burner and Grill Combo That Really Packs a Punch

With a compact, folding design that not only makes it easier to travel with but also protects it against the elements, this car camping stove from Raxter is great for those who are heading to campsites. The set also comes with a grill pan and a built-in ignition

Many buyers have raved about the quality of the burners, saying that they're superb and up there with those on far more expensive stoves. However, some problems arise when you use the grill as not as much fuel is directed there, so it might take a while to get your cheese on toast just how you like it.

Multi-Fuel Properties Make This Stove Extremely Versatile

As you'll probably be able to guess from the name, one of the best selling points from this MSR is that it's super lightweight and therefore ideal for those who like to hike with a small load. Plus, this is one of the options in our ranking that has multi-fuel, allowing it to work with either liquid or gas fuel.

The company has also used something they call AirControl, a technology that maximises the fuel and air mixture with both fuel types ensuring a more consistent flame. The only issue is that it's going to cost you a pretty penny to get your hands on such impressive tech.

No.9

Campingaz
Folding Double Burner Stove and Grill

A Trusted Choice That Lets You Toast and Grill for the Whole Family

This double burner stove has a 1500 W central tube burner, meaning it can pump out more than enough to toast and grill for the whole family. Not only that, but due to the independent stoves, you'll be able to satisfy the fussy eater who doesn't want what everyone else is eating too.

It's powered by butane gas and is said to have a mammoth 14 hours run time, making it ideal for those longer trips. That said, it does take very specific canisters, so you'll need to be prepared and order these in time instead of buying any old gas bottles.

A Compact Set With Everything You Need for a Backpacking Adventure

This compact stove set from Shayson has foldable anti-slip arms, an adjustable fuel flow valve and an ignition system, which is bound to come in handy as you're not required to remember where you left the matches

You also get two pots, one large and one small so you don't have to worry about picking them up separately. Unfortunately the gas flow is known to be a little uneven, which might mean you'll have to pay more attention when cooking your goods. Still, for the price, it's hard to complain!
