Traditionally-styled hammocks are usually made of a cotton or cotton/polyester blend. Tough yet breathable, these woven fabrics are nice and soft to the touch, making them one of the most comfortable options for relaxing.
One common problem with cotton is that being natural, it’s more susceptible to the elements. Without proper care and cleaning, it can develop mould and mildew if left out in the rain or stored in a damp place. If left out in the sun for some time, cotton-based coloured or patterned fabrics may also start to fade.
Hammocks made from nylon are much lighter and pack down much smaller than cotton-based hammocks, allowing them to be chucked into a bag and taken anywhere. They also dry quicker, are more resistant to mould and mildew, and do not fade, making them much better suited to the changeable British summer. This resistance also makes them more durable and less likely to wear out.
On the other hand, while nylon is breathable and soft, some people find this type of hammock less comfortable than cotton-based alternatives, and some may prefer something that looks and feels more traditional and substantial.

Woven polyester is weatherproof like nylon with the thick supportive feel of cotton. However, this fabric can feel cheap and scratchy for many people and uncomfortable to spend time on in the sun without a more natural blanket or towel between you and the hammock.
We’ve included just the one polyester hammock in our list below, as generally, this material is less commonly used for hammocks than cotton and nylon, but it's still something to note.
Hammocks with stands can also make a better bed for cushions and other additional comforts. Arguably hammocks with stands don’t have quite the same informal charm as those strung up between two trees. Though once you’re in them, the world seems just as far away.
The downside here, of course, is that you need two things strong and sturdy enough, and the right distance apart, to comfortably and safely support all the people who might be using the hammock. If in doubt, play it safe and opt for a hammock with a stand.
Spreader bars are strips of wood at either end of the hammock. They separate the cords supporting the hammock, keeping the fabric taut and open, helping avoid the cocooning effect of being enveloped by the sides folding in.
Whether you prefer the sensation of sinking deep into a hammock or you would rather lie more exposed to better soak up the sun’s rays, it is entirely a matter of preference. Similarly, some people find hammocks with spreader bars more stable and easier to get into and out of, while others don't.
Being made of wood, you should take extra care to keep the spreader bars dry and free from damp as this could cause them to rot and break. It's best to move the hammock back inside after each use.
Many hammocks are designed for single-person use, but some will have the room and the strength to safely and comfortably support two adults. Think about whether you’re prepared to share your moments of relaxation or if you’d rather keep them all for yourself!
