Organic toothpaste (or more accurately, toothpaste that contains a portion of organic ingredients) tends to have very a thoughtfully selected, minimal formula, either with or without fluoride. If you want to avoid foaming SLS, artificial preservatives and synthetic colourants and flavours, then organic toothpaste is for you.
Organic farming methods avoid the use of artificial fertilizers and pesticides, giving you extra peace of mind about what you are ingesting through the ultra-thin skin that covers your gums. We have investigated and ranked the best organic, natural and vegan toothpaste brands available to buy in the UK from Amazon, Boots and more.

Organic farming methods avoid the use of pesticides and artificial fertilisers, which can concentrate as a residue in crops and plant extracts – bad news for mainstream toothpaste as the skin covering our gums is very thin and permeable. Reliance on crop rotation and companion planting also results in greater biodiversity when organic agriculture is practised.
Many organic products are clearly labelled with the percentage of organic content. But you need to be aware of which reading you are being given. If the figure is 'excluding water and salts', then the calculation result will look higher than if it is 'of total'. An organic total of over 40% (when it is referring to all of the total ingredients) is a very respectable percentage.
Some companies don't calculate their percentage of organic content (in which case even asking customer services will draw a blank), so instead, look at the list of ingredients. If very few ingredients are organic (and/or if the organic ones come way down the list indicating lesser quantities are used) then you'll know the product isn't actually as organic as it appears.

NHS guidelines advise that adults should brush their teeth with toothpaste containing 1,350-1,500 ppm fluoride twice a day. Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that protects against tooth decay by helping remineralise worn enamel.
However, too much fluoride can cause patches of discolouration on the teeth. So, if you already use oral care products containing fluoride or would rather avoid it entirely, look for a low-fluoride or fluoride-free toothpaste. We've included the fluoride level, where available, for each of the products in our ranking to help you make an informed choice.
In the near future, there will be more fluoride-containing options emerging from organic brands, as recently COSMOS (the organic cosmetic certification scheme, backed by the Soil Association) changed its guidelines to allow sodium fluoride to be present in officially recognised organic products.
Oil-pulling products are another great natural product to add to your dental routine.
We all know by now that even if we try and recycle plastic correctly, most of it ends up being shipped abroad and dumped or burned. Being eco-focused, some organic toothpaste can be found in glass jars with aluminium lids, which completely avoids adding to the plastic packaging problem. This can be in the form of tablets, powders or ready-to-use traditional toothpaste.
Other toothpaste tubes are made from bioplastics. These are not perfect, as they would still remain in nature for hundreds of years if dumped and still degrade to micro-plastics if not disposed of properly. However, bioplastics are made from plant-based raw materials, such as sugar cane, rather than fossil fuels, meaning they are often carbon neutral and certainly less resource-heavy to produce.
A final option is toothpaste in tubes made from a portion of recycled plastic, which shows that packaging of even the most convenient-to-use toothpaste is taking steps in the right direction. All in all, it's just a question of researching what is out there.

Green People products have the very highest eco-credentials and they work brilliantly. Their fresh mint toothpaste is composed of 99% natural ingredients, with an impressive 87% of them being certified organic.
The 1,500 ppm fluoride-containing formula has a pleasant minty flavour, so it tastes very much like a regular toothpaste. The tube has also been re-designed to be easily recyclable (the aluminium lining has been removed), which is yet another plus. There is also a fluoride-free version for those who would prefer such an option.
All Dr. Organic products contain at least 70% organic ingredients – and in this one, the combination of organic tea tree oil and aloe vera means that this toothpaste will fight bacteria and soothe gums simultaneously.
The organic peppermint gives a refreshingly clean feel after brushing and the Icelandic moss adds to the soothing nature of this 100% natural, vegan and cruelty-free toothpaste, with its triple-action promise of whitening, protection and purification.
Urtekram's natural option is a fresh, minty toothpaste with aloe vera to soothe gums and 1,000 ppm fluoride to protect teeth. This paste is a little thinner than regular toothpaste, but that does mean that it lasts longer than a conventional tube.
The new COSMOS organic standards now allow the inclusion of sodium fluoride, so this is a newer fluoride-containing version of a popular existing Uterkram toothpaste. Their Ecocert COSMOS organic certification is supported by the Soil Association, and the packaging is consciously made to have as little impact as possible on the environment.
Organically Epic's toothpaste is made in the UK by an environmentally pioneering company. Organic tea tree and organic peppermint provide natural antibacterial action, whilst charcoal and papaya enzymes brighten and remove stains.
A high level of the natural-sweetener xylitol ensures that the mouth's pH is neutralised, reducing tooth decay and the powerful antioxidants in cranberries (upcycled from the juicing industry) fight plaque too. Such carefully selected components are important additions as no fluoride is included. This is a premium product and the price tag reflects this.
Georganics's travel-friendly toothpaste tablets are made with mineral-rich calcium carbonate and kaolin clay, plus cream of tartar gives a pleasing foam reminiscent of regular toothpaste. Your saliva rehydrates the tablet into a paste, which you then brush with as normal.
The organic spearmint oil provides a minty aroma and natural antiseptic properties. These toothpaste tablets are certified organic by COSMOS, which is supported by the Soil Association. This is a great option for those looking for very minimal and good-quality ingredients, with plastic-free packaging to boot.
This toothpaste powder will evoke nostalgia in some – getting to dip your toothbrush in the toothpowder at your grandparents' house was always an intriguing treat. This powder is flavoured with organic spearmint oil or peppermint oil, both of which give a delicate minty freshness and antiseptic reassurance.
The natural whitening of abrasive bicarbonate of soda will remove stains and the reassuringly short ingredients list will appeal to those trying to avoid hidden additives and preservatives. The salty aftertaste does take some getting used to, as it isn't entirely masked by the mint.
Lavera is a well-respected and trusted eco-conscious German brand. Their dentist-approved 1,400 ppm fluoride toothpaste, with organic mint and eucalyptus, promises impressive 5-fold protection.
The all-natural formula removes plaque, protects against decay, tartar and gum problems and results in extra-fresh breath. It does have a slightly longer list of ingredients than some, which might dissuade those who are simplifying their hygiene routine, plus it doesn't state the percentage of its organic content.
Georganics's whitening toothpaste-in-a-glass-jar has a mineral-rich formula that removes dental plaque naturally. The calcium carbonate and kaolin clay in the organic coconut oil formula remove surface stains gently from teeth. The organic peppermint and coconut oils provide antibacterial cleansing action too.
This UK-made toothpaste is a non-foaming product, meaning it takes an adjustment period to get used to the texture and flavour, so we reckon this is one for the more dedicated clean-living converts.
.Neem has been used for its natural antibacterial cleaning properties for centuries, and here, it helps to remove plaque and surface stains gently but effectively. The organic peppermint oil freshens breath and further adds to the antimicrobial properties of this paste.
Organic pomegranate extract helps support oral health by tightening the gum tissue (it's a natural astringent) and reducing inflammation. Although it has ECOCERT certification as an all-natural product, the percentage of organic ingredients isn't stated by Organique.
This all-natural toothpaste blends powerful polishers and stain-fighting plant extracts to give you a 'power smile'. Bamboo powder, calcium carbonate, bicarbonate of soda and silica remove tartar and gently whiten teeth.
Grapefruit seed extract and perilla seed extract help combat damaging sugar acids, protecting teeth and gums, while peppermint oil freshens breath and adds an antibacterial dimension. While effective, this toothpaste has comparatively few organic ingredients, so it is ranked lower than others on our list.
