There is often a big emphasis on choosing the right tarot deck for you by utilising your intuition. But if you’re new to this, it definitely helps to have a few guidelines about what makes a great deck. Here are a few points to consider before you start shopping around.
The style of the tarot deck refers to what’s going on in the pictures. For example, tarot cards that follow the Rider Waite style contain imagery of people doing things. Whereas the Thoth style of cards tends to resemble the symbols of the suits arranged in a certain way.
The Rider Waite style is often recommended for beginners because the pictures tend to be much easier to interpret. They almost spell out the meaning of the card without you having to dig too deep into the accompanying advice book.
Whereas the Thoth style decks are generally better suited to people who have used tarot cards before and already know the general meanings of each. These pictures tend to be a lot more abstract and difficult to interpret if you aren’t quite sure of what you’re doing.
Tarot decks have come a long way in the past few years, with more elaborate themes popping up every day, making it even more difficult to decide. Start with thinking about what kind of theme appeals to you.
For example, if you’re really interested in fantasy books, perhaps go with a fairy tale theme. Or, if you’re partial to a bit of Greek or Egyptian mythology, then choose a deck that follows this line. There are also many tarot decks that follow gothic or Wiccan themes.
Choose a deck by picking a theme that resonates with you that will phrase things in a manner that you find interesting. It will make getting to know your deck that much easier if you buzz off of its overall vibe!
Next, you want to look at the actual images displayed on the cards. You may have chosen your theme, but the imagery can still widely differ. For instance, they could be in a cartoon style, or a tattoo style or they might have a really traditional feel.
Again, it’s best to just look through the options and go for something that really captures your attention. You’ll be more likely to get your deck out often to absorb the imagery and meanings behind the symbolism if you love looking at them.
Every set of tarot cards comes with a little book that explains the meanings behind each card, but the detail contained in each book differs dramatically. If you’re new to tarot, it might be worth taking an extra hard look at the booklet to see how much information it presents.
That said, if you’ve already got a few decks in your drawers (it can become somewhat of an obsession!), this might not be such an important factor. Also, if you’re already quite in touch with your intuition and you’d like to be left more on your own to interpret the cards, then feel free to choose a deck that comes with a book that’s a little more ambiguous!
Tarot cards come in a wide range of sizes, but the most popular ones resemble a size a little larger than a standard pack of cards. That said, they range all the way from a half-size, small deck to a larger set that you could have trouble shuffling.
Larger cards are great for conducting group tarot readings so that more people can see the cards with ease without being too close. A regular size is perfect for personal readings or one-on-one client sessions, and mini sets are great for travelling and using on the go.

In the top position, we just had to go with the Original Tarot Deck - Rider Waite. No matter how many tarot cards come out, people always seem to regard this one as the best. If you ever attend a professional tarot reading session, chances are they will be using this same pack.
This set comes with the traditional booklet, which provides guidance but also leaves much of it up to interpretation, making this an excellent set for both beginners and advanced tarot readers. The imagery is classic, beautiful and full of colour and life.
The Good Tarot deck is one of the most highly rated and popular sets on Amazon, with over 3500 reviews! Its popularity is undoubtedly due to the stunning, almost otherworldly imagery depicted on the cards.
Following a fantasy theme, you can easily get lost in this deck and transported to the realms of Narnia! The pack also contains a detailed book to help you work out the meanings behind each card, as well as a sturdy box to keep them safe.
The Tarot Tattoo deck is amongst some of the most favourite tarot cards in the UK sold in many shops. However, it’s easiest just to click online and get them from Amazon! The theme is somewhat punky, with absolutely stunning artwork on every single card.
A bit more of an unusual option compared to the more traditional decks. However, it still manages to provide incredible symbolism on each card that you could easily spend hours pouring over. They also come in a sturdy, beautiful box, complete with an informational booklet.
So this one is a little different. As well as the standard interpretations you'd expect to find in the accompanying book, the pages also suggest a crystal to work specifically with each card. The book details the properties of each mentioned crystal alongside how to use them with that card.
This is an excellent tarot deck to purchase if you're also into crystals and looking for ways to incorporate them into your readings. The cards themselves depict stunning fantasy-like imagery as well as a related affirmation to really get you in the zone.
The Essential Tarot Kit comes complete with a deck of tarot cards with a full-size book containing information on the meanings behind each card. Although, the book isn't too detailed, which makes it great for interpretation.
The box it comes in has a magnetic lid and is very sturdy, so it keeps your cards safe and away from any damage. The cards themselves are of excellent quality, with beautiful imagery that is almost angelic with a slightly religious feel.
The Easy Tarot deck by Ciro Marchetti contains another beautiful set of cards with more of a fantasy, magical theme. While some decks provide stunning major arcana cards but offer up a somewhat mediocre rest of the deck, that is not the case here.
Each one contains beautifully presented imagery, symbolism and hidden meanings that are a delight to uncover as you become accustomed to your deck. The only downside is that whilst the description does read gilded, these cards are not, in fact, gilded.
The Mystic Mondays Tarot deck is a great one if you’re looking for a modern set-up. The cards come in a full colour, modern illustration style, with each one looking more like a piece of art rather than a tarot card!
The cards also have a holographic edge and cover, making them feel luxurious and soft to touch. Whilst some customers have been over the moon with their purchase, others note that they don’t seem entirely up to the quality expected, presenting smudges and inconsistencies in the printing.
The next set of tarot cards takes a much more modern approach with beautiful blue and white imagery far from the traditional depictions. The deck also comes with a really detailed book, which explains the meaning and interpretations of the cards, as well as different layouts to try.
The slight downside to this set is the packaging, which is quite flimsy, so it won’t be the best place to store your cards while they’re not in use. The cards themselves are of the standard size, making them easy to shuffle and use in many scenarios.
Next up, we have a modern version of the traditional Rider Waite tarot deck. It uses the same artwork as the original, although a little updated, and comes with a handy little book. However, the book is relatively small and brief, so it might be worth buying an additional full-sized tarot book if you’re new to the game.
This deck is beautiful! It not only has the classic tarot imagery but it’s been jazzed up to provide an almost holographic appearance that changes colour when placed around light. Perfect for a spooky candlelit reading!
So, we’re kicking off our countdown with the unusual Movie Tarot: A Hero’s Journey in 78 Cards. If you’re looking for a traditional tarot deck, this is not it, but it does provide a rather fun and unique way to ease into the tarot world.
Each card depicts a character and scene from a famous movie such as Julie Andrews in The Sound of Music or Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal in Brokeback Mountain. The only issue is that these characters are only depicted on the major arcana cards, not throughout the entire deck, which can often make interpretations a little more complicated.
