The first thing to consider is the style of the sausage maker. There are two favoured options, horizontal and vertical, each of which its advantages and disadvantages.
A horizontal stuffer has two pros. Firstly, they're better for two-person use, which makes them much more fun if you enjoy cooking with your partner, family or flatmates. Secondly, providing you have the equipment, they’re easier to secure to the edge of a bench or surface, which makes them safer and more stable.
That said, there are more vertical options in the market, and they tend to be the most popular out of the two. One of the main reasons for this is that they take up less worktop space, making them more suitable for your everyday home. Plus, they use gravity to feed the meat, so they're a bit easier to use.
Nowadays, you can find stuffers in either manual or motorised varieties. As you’d imagine, the electric versions are generally more expensive than your manual ones. However, for that extra money, you get a faster-stuffed sausage and a much easier time when you’re making them – no elbow grease required!
Manual makers, on the other hand, will save you money but require more effort and patience. They do have a couple of advantages, though, like being able to use them anywhere since the presence of electricity isn’t essential. Plus, you'll feel like you have more control over the operation, which will be fun for those who enjoy the process.
Next up, you’ll want to consider the capacity of the maker. This feature isn’t so complicated; the bigger the capacity, the more sausages you can expect to get from your haul.
The range of capacity available starts just below 1 kg and goes all the way up to 4.5 kg in our ranking. However, if you have a lot of space or you’re looking to start a professional enterprise, there are plenty of machines that offer over 10 kg too.
Think of it this way – if the average pack of six sausages weighs between 400-500 g, a 1 kg capacity should see you produce 12 decent-sized dogs. Of course, whether that is enough depends on your family's eating habits and what you want to use the stuffer for.

Another thing factor to think about is how many stuffing tubes come with the purchase. These will range in size from about 1.5 cm to around 3.1 cm, giving you the chance to create many different sizes of sausages.
The way we see it, the more the merrier. However, if you’re more interested in perfecting your flavours at the moment, it might be something you want to think about post-purchase, as you can always pick these up separately once you’ve mastered the ingredients.

It was difficult to choose a winner, however, we opted for this all-rounder by JasCherry. We think the vertical style, the decent – but not overwhelming – capacity and relatively light weight make it an excellent option for most casual sausage makers.
It also offers a respectable amount of stuffing tubes and easy installation and operation. Granted, it might not be as high-end as some, but it's certainly a quality option for those looking to give sausage making a go for the first time, which we assume, is the majority of people reading this article!
This is a brilliant vertical sausage stuffer built from premium stainless steel that protects against rust. It's on the larger side, so you'll want to make sure you have space in the kitchen, but that also means that there's more room for your delicious cocktail of meat, spices and seasonings.
The design is intuitive and efficient, so you won't be waiting more than a few minutes to start pumping out your sausages. There are three stuffing tube sizes, all of which are quite chunky at 1.9, 2.2 and 3.1 cm – perfect for anyone who likes to have something to sink their teeth into.
Made from both stainless steel and aluminium, this mixer perfectly balances strong durability with a light weight. Plus, aluminium has been used to craft the hand crank, which supposedly makes the process of grinding the meat that little bit easier.
Both the internal and external parts should be easy to clean due to the glossy materials, and they're detachable which makes it even easier. In addition to the machine, you get 3 stuffing tubes, 1.2, 1.6 and 1.9 cm, and while that's not a whole lot of difference in size, it does give you a little variety.
Here we have another stuffer from Master Feng, but this time it's their take on the vertical style. It's worth mentioning that this comes in several sizes, ranging from 0.9-2.2 kg; this is the middle of the road 1.1 kg. It uses the same vice attachment of others in this style and is a manual unit.
One feature that sets this apart from many others on the market is the inclusion of eight, yes eight, different stuffing tubes. This gives you incredible flexibility in terms of what you can produce, making this one apt for those who like to experiment.
If you're wanting to make a tonne of sausages, either to create a reserve so you don't have to do it regularly or for a business, then you'll want a large maker. With a mammoth 10 kg capacity, this one will produce 20 or more decent-sized sausages at a time.
Of course, the bigger capacity means more materials and more materials mean a higher price, so it's likely that this would be overkill for most regular home cooks. That said, if you love them enough, you might make use of it!
Here we have another motorised option from Duronic, the MG301. This is decidedly more powerful than most at 3000 W. So, in theory, it should make mincemeat (pun intended) out of your grub. The grinder has three different mincing options of fine, medium or chunky, and three sizes of stuffing tubes are supplied as well.
One problem is that it is not revealed exactly what capacity it has, which is quite an important factor when comparing models. Plus, it's a little on the heavy side, meaning you might not want to be ferrying it from the worktop to the cupboard too often.
This is a true vertical sausage maker. As you can see from the picture, the appliance is attached to the worktop by a vice. As well as keeping it secure, this gives you a little more freedom in the kitchen whilst also keeping the work surface much clearer.
Due to the design, the maker can easily be used by a single person and is known for enabling a relatively quick and pain-free stuffing process. Moreover, the appliance is made from stainless steel, not only making it solid and durable but also much easier to clean. This is also helped by the detachable parts.
The Nestling mincer and stuffer is the first of our electrical options. It features a 2800 W copper motor (at its peak) making it reliable for home use. The design comes with three cutting plates, which will allow you to grind your meat to various textures and sizes.
The only downside is that there is only one size of stuffing tube provided. This is for the average breakfast sausage, so you might want to consider purchasing extras on the side if you'd like to experiment with other varieties.
This horizontal Master Feng Sausage Stuffer is a manual device that comes with a variety of stuffing tubes ranging from 1.5-2.5 cm, which is helpful for making a variety of different styles of sausage. We also like the inclusion of a suction base on the bottom, ensuring that the device stays stable whilst in use.
Furthermore, the appliance is one of the smaller and lighter options out there. This does mean you have to compromise on the capacity, though, with it able to hold just under 1 kg of meat. Depending on the amount you want to make, this could be a hindrance.
This is a bit of a niche product, but hear us out. You see, if you have a KitchenAid stand mixer, then you can simply attach this to your pre-existing machine and it turns it into both a food grinder and a sausage stuffer. Not only do you get the attachment for the mixer, but there are also stuffing tubes included.
Of course, this is only going to be appropriate for so many people, hence why it's at the bottom of our ranking. However, if you are one of those people, this could save you a few quid and maintain your precious worktop space.
