How to Choose a Cruiser Skateboard in the UK - Buying Guide

Cruiser is a broad term for just about any skateboard that's built to handle ever-changing terrain and make it fun in the process. In this simple buying guide, we'll run you through the different types of cruiser skateboards along with showing you how to pick a cruiser that's built to last, from one destined to buckle.

1

The Broad Horizon of Cruisers Can Be Broken Down Into Three Sizzling Styles

When looking at cruisers it's easy to get lost in the jargon of the different styles of cruiser and what they're best at. Once you know the difference between mini cruisers, cruisers and longboards then you'll be able to make a better judgement on which style may suit your soon to be cruising dreams.

Mini Cruisers Are Easy for Kids to Handle and a Fun Challenge for Adults

Mini Cruisers Are Easy for Kids to Handle and a Fun Challenge for Adults

Mini cruisers are also sometimes referred to as 'penny boards' taken from the culture-defining brand of the same name. They're commonly seen as being one of the only skateboards that every skater can ride and enjoy. From the youngest kids barely able to walk to the seasoned skating veterans, there's no frown that a mini cruiser can't turn upside down.

Their main defining feature is, funnily enough, their size. They're commonly moulded off the traditional skateboards of that 1970's golden era, but are today popularised for having plastic as well as wooden decks. These pocket sized skateboards can be easily transported and will almost always feature a simple tail kick and over-sized soft wheels.

If You're Looking to Gain More Stability While Carving, Opt for a Full Size Cruiser Board

If You're Looking to Gain More Stability While Carving, Opt for a Full Size Cruiser Board

Cruisers benefit from a much wider deck, allowing you to put added trust in its ability to handle more radical carving and blazing your trail through the streets. They can either have a kick-less construction, just a tail kick or sometimes a minimal nose kick to boot.

This scope is where your personal cruising aspirations come into play as a kick-less cruiser will be more suited toward having your wheels firmly rolling on the surface beneath you, whereas tail and nose kicks allow for the potential to ollie if you prefer to take a freestyle approach to your skating.

Longboards Have an Extremely Stable Platform for Dancing and Downhill

Longboards Have an Extremely Stable Platform for Dancing and Downhill

Longboards are a little bit more niche when it comes to skateboards. Sure you can get around on them just like cruisers, but due to having such a large platform they are the top choice for people wanting to bomb hills.

They're also great skateboards for doing more acrobatically influenced tricks, surfing inspired nose riding and even swirling and dancing while skating. This makes them perfect skateboards for letting your imagination run wild and seeing where your longboard style takes you.

Unlike cruisers, longboards are always made out of wood, and often feature a kick-less construction. However, this means you'll have absolutely no chance of flipping these beasts on the streets.

2

Cruiser Skateboards Are Very Much Influenced by Their Width and Length

Now that you've narrowed down the style of cruiser destined to take you to cruising nirvana, it's time to take a look at the deck size. With the slightest of variations changing a decks potential to shred, it's imperative to find a tailor-made cruiser deck from the offset.

When Deciphering the Correct Cruiser Width, It Comes Down to Response Versus Stability

When Deciphering the Correct Cruiser Width, It Comes Down to Response Versus Stability

It's not hard to imagine why deck width is so important for all skateboards. With your feet angled across a skateboard while skating, the width can be seen as the sole cause for responsive turning or a platform stability

Most mini cruisers will have the tiniest width imaginable, quite often being narrower than an adult shoe size, making for some interesting and astonishing forms of skating. These tend to sit between 5.5" and 7.5" in width giving a responsive, albeit sometimes sketchy, feeling of skating on air.

Full-size cruisers allow for a more stable platform, with decks commonly around 7.5" to 9.5" wide. Longboards will have a similar width to full-sized cruisers ensuring you can hit top-speeds with your feet firmly tucked in, and your eyes on the prize.

A Cruisers Length Will Giveth Stability, or Taketh Away

A Cruisers Length Will Giveth Stability, or Taketh Away

There is no rule when it comes to choosing your ideal cruiser length. For example, some adults prefer to ride teeny tiny mini cruisers at 22" in length, while plenty of kids feel at home on full-size cruisers. However, the common industry standard length for full-sized cruisers is generally between 27" and 30", while mini cruisers tap out at 26"

As the name suggests, longboards are in a category of their own in the length department. Longboards can be any length over 32" and it's not uncommon to see them reach 40" and beyond. The longer a board is the better it'll be at gaining speed and keeping momentum, while shorter cruisers are more reactive and have freestyle skating on the brain.

3

Look for Bamboo and Maple Cruisers For Faith in the Deck Below

Look for Bamboo and Maple Cruisers For Faith in the Deck Below

Cruisers can be built from either plastic, wood or sometimes a fibreglass and wood composite. With mini cruisers being the usual plastic suspects, you will find full-sized cruisers are typically constructed from wood, and the odd longboard benefiting from a snowboard inspired fibreglass and wood blend.

The industry standard for most wooden cruisers is 7 pieces of ply. This will be a telling sign that a skate brand have put trust in their decks construction. If you're searching for quality, try to avoid decks made from Chinese maple or Birch wood, instead of the preferred bamboo or Canadian maple wood.

Bamboo is selected for a super comfortable and flex-orientated feel, while remaining incredibly strong. On the other hand, Canadian maple wood is highly sought after for its stiff and responsive nature, while also winning points on the strength front. Thus, making both bamboo and maple great choices for a cruiser skateboard.

Good Bearings Are a Prerequisite for All Cruisers With a Need for Speed

Good Bearings Are a Prerequisite for All Cruisers With a Need for Speed

Bearings are one of the most important parts of a cruiser skateboard. The bearings are what allow a skateboard's wheels to spin, and can be seen as the engine room that produces the speeds that make skating such an attractive sport to learn.

Bearings are typically measured in terms of their ABEC rating. Standing for Annular Bearing Engineers' Committee, ABEC is the U.S standard for measuring the accuracy and tolerance of bearings the world over. They run in a scale from 1-9, going up 2 at a time, with 9 being the speediest and 1 being the clunkiest.

You will find cruiser bearings tend to sit high between 7 and 9 on the ABEC scale, with both being seen as a superior, depending on whether you want the extra clicks on the speedometer from abec 9's, or are content with abec 7's. Although, overall price and choosing recognised cruiser brands names are also good indicators for long-lasting, trustworthy bearings.

Be Sure to Check if a Cruisers Wheels Are Soft and Fat Enough for Faithful Skating

Be Sure to Check if a Cruisers Wheels Are Soft and Fat Enough for Faithful Skating

When skating the wheels are your only point of contact with the ground beneath you. This makes what they're made from, and how they're made, a crucial factor to understand. All cruiser skateboard wheels worth your time will be constructed from polyurethane (Pu), which is a hardened, formable plastic revered for its hardwearing nature.

Cruiser wheels are frequently softer than other types of skateboard wheels. This softness plays an integral role in the wheels gripping the ground, while also allowing the board to hop, skip and jump over uneven terrain. That's why you'll find cruiser wheels have a hardness between 75A and 88A on the skateboard durometer scale.

Wheel size is the final factor to consider as it'll have a direct effect on a skateboards overall carving capabilities. Where cruisers are concerned, it's all about having the fattest wheels possible, making it common to find cruisers with wheels between 60 mm and 75 mm in size

The deck is a little wood sandwich with 5 birch wood layers tucked in-between 2 Canadian maple layers, disappointingly making it lose out on some durability points. But with the preferred abec 7 bearings, it'll have some get up and go from the very first push.

Narrow Surfboard Inspired Cruiser for a Responsive Ride

This is a cruiser that'll have you channelling your inner surf vibes from the very first carve. The abec 7 bearings should be an adequate amount of speed, while the Pu wheels have a hardness rating of 83A which is in the mid range for cruisers.

Be aware that this hardness rating will increase the potential for speed, but won't grip the ground like softer wheels will. Further, the deck is made from 7 pieces of Russian and Chinese maple which is a slight warning sign as to the quality of the board. Still for the price it's a decent complete cruiser.

Summary

A cruiser skateboard is undeniably some of the most fun you can have on four wheels. Skating down the street with the wind in your hair, the ground flowing away beneath you and all the worlds potential ahead, it's a hard feeling to top. We hope this article was helpful in finding you a cruiser to be proud of, with a ticket to rock, roll and ride!
