How to Choose a Complete Skateboard for Adults in the UK - Buying Guide

Skating attracts people from all generations and all walks of life, and as long as you've got a suitable skateboard and a little patience, it can be a really beneficial sport to partake in. Our guide is here to run you through the different types of skateboards and their defining factors, making picking one from the top 10 below a stressless affair.

1

A Skateboard Needs to Fit the Style of Skating You Intend to Do

Skateboards can be broken down into two main categories: boards aimed at progressing through tricks in the street and skatepark and cruisers and longboards which are better suited for rolling your worries away. This clear line in the skating sand makes deciding on board type your first decision.

Get a Double Kick if Your Skating Dreams Lean Towards Mastering Tricks

Get a Double Kick if Your Skating Dreams Lean Towards Mastering Tricks

Double kick skateboards are a classic in the skating world and are the best style for tricks. So, if your aim is more to nail tricks in the skatepark or the street than travel across town, a double kick board is for you.

The name double kick comes from the design – the nose and tail of the skateboard are both elevated at an angle, helping to create pop and, in turn, allowing you to ollie. With the ollie being the backbone that most other tricks are structured around, you can see why this is the best board for the job.

Double kicks will always feature much smaller and harder wheels when compared to cruisers, which will enable a more responsive feel and withstand the compression of landing tricks.

If You Want a Skateboard to Handle All Types of Terrain, Aim for a Cruiser or Longboard

If You Want a Skateboard to Handle All Types of Terrain, Aim for a Cruiser or Longboard

Cruiser skateboards, as the name suggests, will get you where you're going while enjoying all the thrills of skating. A plus is that they come in many different sizes, making them ideal for anyone to find some skating solace on.

Being more for cruising than tricks, they usually only have a tail kick, or sometimes a slight nose kick to increase their trick capabilities. They will also feature large, soft wheels, adding to their ease of coasting over street debris safely and soundly.

Longboards are constructed with the same premise as cruisers, except, of course, they are often much longer than any other skateboard. Due to their size, they lose out on the manoeuvrability of shorter cruisers, so they're a better choice if you want a board that can handle hurtling speeds and long-distance commutes

2

Get Familiar With the Defining Parts of a Complete Skateboard

When buying a complete skateboard, you want to make sure that each integral part is up to scratch. This will not only ensure your safety but also your possibility for progression. Focusing on the deck, wheels and bearings will give you a rounded view of the prowess of a particular complete.

As an aside, trucks and grip are also integral parts to a complete board, however, with all completes found online coming with aluminium trucks and grip, this makes these parts more price-point specific in determining quality.

Whatever Style You Pick, Choose a Width That Suits How You Want to Skate

Whatever Style You Pick, Choose a Width That Suits How You Want to Skate

The width of a skateboard is hugely important, as it'll influence the style of skating you want to get involved with, as well as how adept it is at allowing tricks and flips.

Most double kicks come in at 8.5" wide, with full-sized boards of over 7.5" being considered standard for this variety. If you're keen to master flip tricks, stick to the lower end, or for bowl and ramp skating where you need a solid platform, try something wider.

For cruisers, the widths vary much more than a couple of inches, ranging from mini cruisers of 5.5" to longboards and old school cruisers of a mighty 10". The same principle can be applied to these types of decks too – if you're looking for stability go wider, or if you want a more responsive feel, go narrower

For Adult Boards, Stick to Double Kick Decks Over 30 Inches

For Adult Boards, Stick to Double Kick Decks Over 30 Inches

As well as its style, a skateboard's type and intended purpose can be deduced by its length. When looking to buy a double kick for adults, you should be looking solely in the 30" to 32" range. This is the industry standard for all decks designed for adults; anything lower is better suited to kids.

It can get a little more sporadic where cruisers and longboards are concerned, with some adults preferring to coast on micro-mini cruisers of just 22 inches because that's what will give the most responsive feel

Longboards, meanwhile, can start at 32" and reach 40" and beyond, so it can be hard to know where to start. Generally, longer boards will help you reach higher speeds and keep momentum, but, as with cruisers, a shorter one will be more responsive.

The Best Skateboard Decks Are Made From Quality Maple Wood

The Best Skateboard Decks Are Made From Quality Maple Wood

A skateboard needs to be lightweight yet durable with plenty of pop, which is why they're constructed from multiple layers of ply. The number of layers can indicate its quality, although more isn't necessarily better – a 9 ply deck, for example, only has so many layers to make up for the cheapness of its material.

The magic ply number here is 7, and when it comes to materials, Canadian and North American maple wood is the best there is. Decks made from Chinese maple or birchwood are lower in quality and won't last as long.

The reason Canadian and North American maple is considered superior for skateboards is because it is flexible yet incredibly strong, due to the unique climate that makes the maple trees grow slowly, increasing their impact resistance.

Skateboard Wheels Are Measured by Their Size and Hardness Rating

Skateboard Wheels Are Measured by Their Size and Hardness Rating

The wheels are your only point of contact with the ever-changing ground beneath you, which makes what they're made from and how they're made crucial to understand. Any skateboard wheels worth your time will be constructed from polyurethane (PU), which is a hardened, formable plastic revered for its hardwearing nature.

Most skateboards wheels have a hardness rating that runs from the softest and grippiest at 75A all the way up to 103A. The higher the number, the harder the wheels will be, making them good for gaining and keeping speed in the skatepark but disastrously inadequate when coming up against debris.

Wheel size is another factor to consider as it'll have a direct effect on a skateboard's overall capabilities. Where cruisers are concerned it's all about having the fattest wheels possible; 65 mm is a common size and a good one to go for. Double kicks, meanwhile work best with wheels between 50 and 55 mm.

Good Bearings Are a Prerequisite for All Levels of Skateboard

Good Bearings Are a Prerequisite for All Levels of Skateboard

Last but not least, bearings. As the part that allows a board's wheels to spin, bearings can be seen as the engine room that produces the speeds that make skating such an attractive sport to learn.

Bearings are typically measured in terms of their ABEC rating. Standing for Annular Bearing Engineers' Committee, ABEC is the US standard for measuring the accuracy and tolerance of bearings but is used the world over. They run on a scale from 1-9, going up 2 at a time, with 9 being the speediest and 1 being the clunkiest.

Bearings tend to sit between 3 and 7 on the ABEC scale, with 7 being fast and superior and 3 more of a budget offering. It can get a bit tricky as the ABEC rating alone won't necessarily indicate quality, but the overall price and recognised brand names are also good indicators for long-lasting, trustworthy bearings.

The Best Complete for Intermediate Skaters With Eyes on the Half Pipe

Decathlon's Oxelo brand are quickly making a name for themselves in the skateboard world for giving skaters quality products for super competitive prices. This double kick complete is a shining example of just that.

At 8.25" in width and 31.9" in length, this is a board that will give a stable ride through bowls, half pipes and all over the skatepark. The hard 101A wheels will allow for high speeds and handling of heavy impact with little chance of acquiring the dreaded flat spots, too. Add on the dressed-down decal, and this is a board for anyone to find some skatepark respect on.

Solid and Stable With Tropical Grip Tape Vibes

The first thing you notice with this full-sized cruiser from FlyBee is the tropical vibes on the grip tape. We're convinced the all-knowing parrot will help you stay focused and calm as you carve out new lines and territories with this trusty skateboard steed.

Ticking all the right boxes in terms of deck size and construction, this will be a solid and stable deck giving you plenty of chance to shred. It's a little pricier than the other offerings but well worth the few extra quid, with its ABEC 7 bearings, soft and grippy 78A PU wheels and even a bonus skate tool thrown in.

For Experienced Skaters Looking to Bag More Street Tricks

The Renner Z series complete is really geared toward experienced skaters only. For one, there are super speedy ABEC 9 bearings that'll have you tearing through the skatepark or streets faster than most. The 7 ply Canadian maple construction will also enable good skaters to put trust in this board when going for bigger tricks.

This is a narrow deck at 7.75 inches, which is both good for adults on the lighter side of the scale as well as anyone looking for a small deck to progress through street style tricks. With 95A wheels, it'll also handle some off-kilter terrain including those dodgy pavements.

The large and soft wheels will give you plenty of grip to facilitate these large carving turns you're already imagining. The ABEC 9 bearings also give you the chance to push the boundaries in the speed department. Just make sure you strap a helmet around your noggin before bombing any hills with this one.

Narrow Deck Designed for Street-Style Skating

At 7.75" in width, this is a deck for light or experienced skaters wanting a responsive feel to achieve street tricks specifically. It has extremely hard 55D wheels (which translates to around 103A), so this is a fast board that's only suited to the skatepark and smooth concrete.

Thanks to its 7 ply Canadian maple construction and ABEC 7 bearings, this is a skateboard that's been made well and is designed to be skated well. It also comes assembled with grip tape so you'll be rolling straight out the box, hopefully landing that elusive heelflip in no time.

Aodi have created a statement longboard to give you skating street cred and add a little bit of safety in the darkness of night. The wheels actually light up, which will give you an unforgettable ride while ensuring other road and pavement users can spot you a mile off.

The tail and nose feature a slight kick to give you more control through turns and tricks, which will appeal to intermediate to advanced riders. The PU 85A wheels are on the harder side too, making for a longboard that can reach faster speeds with more sliding potential.

A Hardcore Beginner and Intermediate Board With Great Pop

Sefulim have gone for the skull decal here, aimed at attracting the Princes and Princesses of darkness. Looks aside, the 7 ply Canadian maple makes for a solid deck, which sits on aluminium trucks and PU 95A wheels – in other words, they're on the softer side, so they're ideal for beginner and intermediate skaters.

With the speeds produced from the ABEC 7 bearings, you should be fully capable of learning your first tricks with enough speed to gain the lucrative key to skating success: pop. All in all, this is a good complete to find your skating feet with.

Full-Sized Cruiser to Practice Carving With a Stable Platform

The Beleev cruiser is a great entry-level cruiser for beginners and intermediate skaters wanting to feel the insatiable thrills of gliding and carving your way down the streets. As it's made from 7 layers of Canadian ply, you can be sure this is a board that'll last.

It comes with super-soft 78A wheels that'll enable you to grip the pavement while also skipping and hopping over the inevitable stone or two. It also has four insanely loud decals to choose from, making it a head-turning board even when it's tucked under your arm.

Perfect for Beginners Learning Their First Tricks

On the smaller side at 7.87" in width, this skateboard is a great pick for beginners learning their first tricks. Plus, coming in four unique decals ensures every avid newcomer can find their own individual style straight out of the box.

The hard 99A wheels make it more suited to smooth streets and skateparks specifically, but with ABEC 7 bearings you should have no problem gaining the speeds necessary to progress when the time is right. Unfortunately, it's constructed from 2 Canadian ply and 5 Chinese ply, which is another reason why it's more suited to beginners only.

A Vintage Replica Mini Cruiser Built for Fun

This mini cruiser series from Meteor is 5.5" wide 22.1" long and comes in seven striking yet unique designs. Mini cruisers really are some of the most versatile skateboards, as they're a pleasure for adults to conquer the skating ways of old and small enough for the kids to handle too.

With ABEC 7 bearings and PU wheels at 60 mm, you should have no trouble cruising over the street debris as you're getting round town on this sleek board. The only negative is the deck is constructed from a mix of Chinese and Canadian maple, which, coupled with the low price, indicates that this board isn't of the highest quality.

Summary

At the end of the day, skating is about finding enjoyment through improving while making new friends and keeping the stoke alive. Whichever stage you're at, we hope you've managed to find a complete skateboard that'll have your back time and time again, making progression easy and letting the good times roll.
