How to Choose Sausages in the UK

Key Points to Consider
  1. Choose Between Pork, Chicken, and Turkey Depending on the Fat Content
  2. Go for Low Meat Percentage of Less Than 50% for a Soft-texture, or Higher If You Prefer a Coarser Texture
  3. Pick a Flavor That Goes Well With Your Dish

Pork Is Classic, However Go for Leaner Chicken or Turkey Based Sausages if You're Concerned About Fat Content

Pork Is Classic, However Go for Leaner Chicken or Turkey Based Sausages if You're Concerned About Fat Content

The first point to consider is what type of meat you’re going to go for. The most common is of course minced pork, which will be accompanied by various seasonings (usually at least salt, pepper and nutmeg), as well as a binding agent and water. Though full of flavour, the downside of pork is that it has a pretty high fat content, so you may have keep an eye on how many sausages you’re shovelling down at breakfast.

If you’re health-conscious or have any conditions that require you to stay on top of your fat consumption, luckily there are alternatives. Firstly, you have reduced fat pork sausages, which generally have about 50% less fat than normal pork. As with most reduced fat foods, you will sacrifice some flavour here.

Another option is to plump for chicken or turkey sausages. As well as suiting those who don't eat pork, they have a much lower fat and calorie content whilst still retaining high levels of protein, and can be just as satisfyingly tasty.

There are many different options on the shelves these days rather than just pork sausages, which is excellent from a health perspective! I would certainly recommend opting for either a reduced-fat pork option or even selecting chicken or turkey. Regular pork sausages are incredibly high in calories as well as lousy fat- and that is not how you want to be starting your day off.

Choose a Low Meat Percentage Below 50% for a Soft-Textured Sausage, but Go for a Higher Percentage if You Prefer a Coarser Texture

Choose a Low Meat Percentage Below 50% for a Soft-Textured Sausage, but Go for a Higher Percentage if You Prefer a Coarser Texture

The percentage of meat in sausages can vary drastically from below 50% to almost 100%, with the latter being seen as superior as there's less room for additives or fillers and more room for real meat. However, which tastes better does also come down to personal taste, as well as a few other factors.

Often, though not always, the higher the percentage of meat, the leaner the sausage will be. This is great if you’re looking for a high-protein addition to a meal and if you like your sausages to have a bit of a coarser texture.

On the opposite end of the scale, with a lower percentage of meat you’ll likely find a higher fat content, as fats and oils will be added to bulk out the recipe. This will typically make for a softer-textured sausage, and they'll also be greasier.

Sausages can vary drastically regarding the quality of meat and protein. I would always recommend reading the ingredient label to ensure you are opting for sausages that have more protein than fat (as the fat in sausages is considered ‘bad’ fat).

Eating a diet high in protein is imperative for good health because it aids in the proper recovery of muscle tissue, digestion, and hormonal balance. Protein can also make you feel more satisfied and fuller for longer periods, which helps with weight loss and weight management.

Chorizo-Style Sausages Are Great for Spanish Cooking, But Go For Herb-Infused Sausages for a Classic Casserole

Chorizo-Style Sausages Are Great for Spanish Cooking, But Go For Herb-Infused Sausages for a Classic Casserole

When we were kids the most experimental sausages we ever saw came in a square! Nowadays, though, there are plenty of exciting flavour combinations to be found, even in your local supermarket. Of course, you can always buy plain sausages as these are the most flexible, and go with a wide range of dishes from casseroles to bangers and mash.

However, if you are looking to mix it up, how about a spicy sausage with chilli or chorizo-style seasoning? They offer a headier smokiness due to the inclusion of peppers, and will perfectly complement Spanish and Mexican dishes. They can even bring a new lease of life to a classic sausage sandwich.

Not a fan of the spice? That doesn’t mean missing out. Plenty of brands keep it exciting with additions like caramelised onions, and herbs such as sage, parsley and rosemary. This can add a new depth of flavour to classic stews, or can subtly cap off an Italian sausage dish.

When it came to crowning our number one, it was never going to be anything other than a straight-up classic pork sausage with unique pepper and nutmeg flavours. And here we have possibly the best around.

Fine Chicken Sausages Great for Mediterranean Dishes

As Heck say themselves, 'Why should pork get all the glory?'. To prove their point, they've got to work making some of finest sausages around – their Chicken Italia. These babies are jam-packed with tomato, garlic, basil and mozzarella to give a big hearty taste that isn't going to go straight to the waist.

If you're frequently whipping up meals such as risotto, pasta, paella or other Mediterranean dishes, these will surely be a welcome addition to your shopping cart. These sausages have amazing taste, quality, and at an affordable price tag, of course it's our no. 2!

For Those Who Are Always Craving a Breakfast Muffin

We couldn't compile a ranking without an odd-shaped sausage now, could we? These patties are reminiscent of the main ingredient in a certain fast food chain's famous breakfast snack, though you'll get quite a bit more meat here – to be exact, Tesco's version are made with 96% pork!

As well as the high meat content, they're sumptuously seasoned with sage, parsley and black pepper, and are lower in fat and sodium than many other processed patties. If you're a fan of a breakfast muffin but want to up the quality, these are surely a must-try.

A Brilliant Blend to Get Your Taste Buds Dancing

If you're keen to get those taste buds dancing – and perhaps the brow sweating – we'd say three types of chilli is probably going to do the trick. Luckily, Asda thought that too, and blended habanero, jalapeño and chipotle into these fiery bangers

If you're a dab hand in the kitchen we imagine you'll be able to pull out some absolutely show-stopping meals with these sausages, from mouth-watering spicy sausage rolls to a red-hot twist on a classic pasta bake. Foodies will also love the high-quality 80% pork

A Budget Option for Those Looking to Keep Fat Content Down

If you're looking to keep the fat content down but don't fancy trying out other sausage meats, then these reduced-fat pork bangers could be the way to go. These surprisingly tasty sausages from Tesco have around 50 % less of the bad stuff, so you can rest assured that you're at least trying.

Flavour-wise, they're your everyday sausage, so they will be right at home in plenty of dishes from sausage casseroles to barbecues. Plus, they're good value for the amount you get

A Classic That Has Been Feeding the Nation for Over 100 Years

A shopping staple that's sure to have fed most meat-eating families around the country at some point, we think it would be fair to say that Richmond sausages are almost as British as the Queen. They're made using a special recipe that creates a strong and familiar sausage taste, comprising of hints of nutmeg and pepper.

Unfortunately, they do have a downfall if you're keen to buy top quality – as a result of having a low meat percentage and several fillers, they do have a slightly mushy texture. Of course, this makes them a great budget-friendly option if you're not fussy about add-ins!

Mildly Spiced but Full of Flavour

If you're looking to spice up your weeknight bangers and mash, then these sweet chilli chicken sausages from Tesco would be a great way to do so. They have a mild spice upon tasting, which is then followed by notes of garlic, coriander and paprika to get a really full flavour.

Although they are lower in fat due to the use of chicken, they do contain slightly more additives than your typical sausages (who knew sausages needed raising agents?), so purists may want to look elsewhere.

Rich and Smoky Taste of the Mediterranean

Get a taste of the Mediterranian with this delightful 6 pack of chorizo-inspired sausages. In the ingredients list, you'll find not only 82% pork but red pepper, garlic puree, black pepper and dried red pepper flakes. These are sure to taste just as good in a Spanish breakfast as they are on the BBQ.

As with all things spicy you'll have to use your instinct, although reviewers say they aren't too overpowering. It's worth noting that you may want to remove the skin before serving as it is reported to be a little tough.

An Interesting Mix With a Touch of Sweetness

There's a lot going on here but if you stick with it, pork chipolatas with honey and rosemary wrapped in oak smoked dry-cured bacon does sound pretty heavenly, right? We can already see people pinching these from the kitchen side before you've got round to serving up your Sunday roast!

It is worth pointing out that the honey might be a tad sweet for some tastes, particularly has some buyers have claimed they are very heavily seasoned. Though they do have a good meat content they're also rather expensive, especially considering they're chipolatas rather than full-sized sausages.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Sausages Healthy?

Traditional pork sausage is not very healthy. These sausages are very high in ‘bad’ fat and calories, and they don’t tend to have much nutritional value. Healthier alternatives would undoubtedly be to choose chicken or turkey sausages or reduced-fat pork sausages. These can be eaten regularly as they are higher in protein and lower in calories and fat.

Are Sausages Good for Weight Loss?

If weight loss is a primary goal, we would not recommend incorporating sausages into your diet. To lose weight, you need to be in a calorie deficit; essentially, you need to move and burn more than you eat. With traditional pork sausages, you would be at risk of overconsuming your daily allowance. Stick to chicken and turkey sausages, if possible.
