How to Choose an Adult Scooter in the UK - Buying Guide

Perhaps you're bored of your commute to work, or maybe you fancy taking up a new hobby and learning some new tricks; either way, a scooter could be an exciting new transport idea. Being both good for you and the planet, it's a win-win situation if you know what to look for, so let's get stuck in.

1

Pick the Type of Scooter Based on When and Where You'll Use It

Although they might all look fairly similar on the surface, there are a few important differences to note when it comes to choosing adult scooters. These differences largely come down to whether a scooter is going to be taken to work, to the skate park or off-road, so first, consider your main usage.

Choose a City Scooter to Get From A to B

Choose a City Scooter to Get From A to B

If you just want to use a scooter for getting around your town, city or local area, then a larger scooter with more comfortable riding features is perfect.

Often advertised as commuter, city, or road scooters, this is the most popular adult variety nowadays. They have brakes, wide, comfortable footplates and far more scope for adjustment than stunt options, which is why they are better for travelling longer distances.

Look for a Stunt Scooter If You Want to Learn Tricks

Look for a Stunt Scooter If You Want to Learn Tricks

Using a scooter doesn't have to just be about getting from place to place. Why not try taking up a new hobby and head down to the local skate park and perfect a few moves with your scooter?

If this sounds good to you, choose a stunt scooter. These are often more basic but have wider handlebars to give you more control.

A Dirt Scooter Will Allow You to Go Off-Road

A Dirt Scooter Will Allow You to Go Off-Road

These scooters are similar to stunt scooters but often have bigger, chunkier wheels to help with shock absorption and stability.

Buying one of these will mean that not only are you no longer limited to concrete, but uneven pavements or cobblestones will also be a lot easier to navigate. Just be aware that they probably won't have all the extra features of a city scooter, or be as light as a stunt scooter, so they're not as versatile.

2

Make Sure the Handlebars Are the Right Height

Make Sure the Handlebars Are the Right Height

Adults who've ever tried to use a child's scooter will know how difficult it is when you've got your hands around your knees! Height is actually the main distinction between a kid's scooter and its adult equivalent, as on a fundamental design level, they're not too different.

It's worth checking whether the height of the handlebars can be adjusted, although this is not always an option with stunt and dirt scooters. On city styles, check that they can go high enough, particularly if you're tall.

As a frame of reference, it's recommended that the handlebars sit around your waist to hip area when you're on board.

3

Look for Bigger Wheels and Suspension If You Travel Over Uneven Ground

Look for Bigger Wheels and Suspension If You Travel Over Uneven Ground

The size of wheels on scooters varies quite dramatically, and there are advantages to both small and big wheels. Some people might prefer the look of larger wheels, but in terms of practicality, they're a good choice if you want to travel faster over more uneven ground. Wheels of 200 mm and over are generally considered on the larger side.

However, bigger wheels will take up more space when storing and will be heavier, so are maybe not the best option if you think you might have to transport your scooter.

While big wheels will definitely help with some of the shock absorption necessary when travelling over bumpy terrain on your scooter, the addition of suspension will make for an even smoother ride – something to look for if you don't like bouncing around.

4

Need to Carry Your Scooter? Go for Light, Foldable Designs

Need to Carry Your Scooter? Go for Light, Foldable Designs

One great advantage of a scooter as a mode of transport is that you can pack it up and take with you, ready for whenever you need it. If you will potentially be carrying your scooter for extended periods of time, look for a lighter weight of 5 kg or under

Another feature that will make your scooter much more practical for carrying is whether you can fold it up. A foldable scooter will also mean it won't get in the way when storing it – you could even squeeze it under your desk if necessary! There's also the option of having scooters with foldable handlebars if this appeals.

5

The Right Type of Brakes Will Allow You to Stop Safely

The Right Type of Brakes Will Allow You to Stop Safely

Riding on a scooter is a much quicker way of getting around than walking, but this means it has the potential to be less safe. Scooters are normally used on the pavement, so it is important that you are in control.

To do this, a good brake is required, and all scooters have different levels of braking. Some just have a heel brake, where you use your pushing foot to press the pedal on the back wheel, but others give the option of a handlebar brake, too. This is a system more like that of a bike, which may be preferable if you'd like more reassurance.

6

Leave Your Scooter Upright With a Stand

Leave Your Scooter Upright With a Stand

If you need hop off your scooter quickly but don't have time to pack it away, then having a stand will be very useful

This means you can leave your scooter just as you like it without having to make any adjustments whilst still ensuring it is out of the way and not going to be trampled on or damaged

Your New Favourite Sidekick That'll Take You Everywhere

Available in rose gold or champagne, this innovative scooter doesn't only look good and have all the adjustments you'd need, but it packs up in such a way that you can attach a strap and carry it around like a bag. The fact that it's so light only helps with this – but don't worry, it's incredibly sturdy and has a nice wide footplate too.

It also has the added bonus of a dual-braking system, so that you can stop as soon as you need to, which is necessary when scooting around busy cities. All in all, this scooter is sure to get you where you need to be happily and safely, which is why it takes our top spot!

With This Scooter, Safety Is Put First

This scooter is not only rather stylish, but the dual-braking system will help make sure that you're safe whilst on two wheels. Add this to the wide, comfy handlebars and low-set anti-slip footplate and this soon becomes a great pick for those newer to scootering or who might be feeling a bit uncertain.

Although the 6.5 kg weight might seem a little hefty to cart around, this scooter has a trick up its sleeve: it incorporates a one-second Kleefer system, which enables you to swiftly fold it in half and pull it along like a trolley. Clever!

A Reliable and Stable Way of Travelling

Micro are one of the biggest names in the scooter game, and with good reason. Swiss designed and engineered, their products are reliable and made to last – even if one part breaks, it can be easily replaced without having to fork out for a whole new scooter.

This is the brand's latest best-seller, which offers plenty of useful features like foldability, a stand and larger wheels, but one thing that does distinguish it is the deck design. It is positioned lower than the axle and is nice and wide, meaning you'll be steady and stable whilst you cruise along

A Slick City Scooter Offering the Smoothest of Rides

If you're worried how a scooter might cope with more bumpy terrain, whether on countryside paths or cobbled streets, then Atom's adult model is for you. It has robust dual suspension and 200 mm wheels, which will diffuse some of the ups and downs that roads can throw at you,

It's also very easy to fold up and store away into the included travel bag, and is generally a great choice if you're looking for something well-made to keep up with travelling moderate distances every day. It does weigh 6.5 kg, which is not the lightest, but if you're only taking it on and off public transport or you don't need to carry it far, it should be fine.

A Wide Range of Heights Makes This a Scooter for All

Alongside the larger wheel of its namesake, this popular scooter's adjustability is one of its greatest assets. Not only is this the case with the height of the handlebars (which can be adjusted anywhere between 79 to 104 cm), but it is also extremely easy to fold away and store.

Better yet, it weighs just 4 kg and has an adjustable carry strap fitted, too. The product has a much jazzier look than most adult scooters that won't appeal to everyone, but it does have plenty of useful and practical features to make up for it.

An Inexpensive Way to Try Out Scooting

If you're wanting something fairly inexpensive to test the scooting waters, bopster's offering is a great place to start. Though they're known for their excellent stunt scooters, this model has been designed with adult commuters in mind, offering handlebar heights to suit anyone from 5 ft to 6 ft 4.

Other appealing features include a slimline folded state and an incredibly lightweight of just 4.4 kg – perfect for daily train, tube or bus travellers. Suspension, a stand and a carry strap or bag would have been nice inclusions, but you can always buy the latter yourself.

Nail Those Stunts Whilst Looking Stylish

This stunt scooter is exactly what it should be – light and simple – but don't worry, this doesn't mean it's a dull choice! The deck, for example, has a fun geometric pattern and the orange detailing also brings some added personality whilst still keeping things mature.

If you only have a minimal distance to travel – a quick school run, for instance – you could also consider this ultra-light scooter. Plus, with its sensitive break system, a diverse range of ages can use it. However, the height is not adjustable, which does mean it might be a bit short if you are a taller adult.

What Are the Scooter and Electric Scooter Laws in the UK?

What Are the Scooter and Electric Scooter Laws in the UK?

Let's clear up some information on scooters, or more specifically, electric scooters. Unfortunately, as they are classified as 'powered transporters’, e-scooters are not currently legal on roads or pavements in the UK and can only be ridden on private land with the owner’s permission.

This means that, just like a car or motorbike, you would need a driving license, tax, insurance and number plates to take to the streets – but at the moment, it's not possible to obtain any of these. So, while an electric scooter may seem appealing, be warned: it's probably not worth investing in this bit of kit for the moment.

Trials are underway in the UK to potentially allow the rental of e-scooters as a mode of transport, so keep your eyes peeled if this is something you're interested in. In the meantime, read on to find a more suitable, affordable and perfectly legal alternative – kick scooters!
