This means that although it may fade over time, it’s incredibly long-lasting and doesn’t respond to dyeing with chemical products. So, you should bear this in mind if you like to switch up your hair colour on a regular basis.
Most henna products will give your hair a rich red or orange tone, depending on your natural hair colour. Blonde locks will turn a brighter shade like orange and brunettes will achieve a ginger hue, whereas those with much darker hair may only be able to notice the occasional hint of red.
Alternatively, choose a cream-based formula for an extra nourishing treat for your hair. Although these are less common than powders, they’re just as effective at providing a hint of colour. A henna cream will add moisture, leaving your hair silky to the touch – so it’s perfect if you’ve got damaged locks!
Checking the ingredients to make sure that nothing nasty has been added only takes a few seconds and will give you peace of mind that you’re buying an all-natural product.
However, if synthetic fragrances give you a headache, you may want to stick to products without added nasties. Instead, you could look for a product with added essential oils to create a more natural and relaxing fragrance.
Perfect for a spa night in – or would even make a nice gift for a friend! The only downside to this product is that it has very plain packaging with little information about the ingredients.
Lastly, rinse your hair with water (it may need more than one attempt) and/or conditioner, for added moisture. But make sure you don’t use shampoo, as this can strip away your newly added colour. And that’s it, you’re all set!
Henna hair dye is considered safer than regular dyes because it is derived from natural ingredients. Though you should always check to make sure that the henna dye doesn’t contain any additives as this can also damage your hair. Regardless of the product, you must always carry out a patch test.
While henna is considered a permanent dye, you will notice that the colour will start to slightly fade in vibrancy from 4-6 weeks depending on how often you wash your hair. Other factors that can affect the longevity of your colour are your hair type and health of your hair - the healthier, the better.
Henna will only sit in the top layer of your skin, so some light exfoliation with a gentle soap or baby oil should help to start lifting the pigment. Another remedy is to make a paste with lemon juice and baking soda and leave it to sit for 10 minutes before rinsing. Avoid resorting to rubbing alcohol.
Sometimes we need to top up our old colour, and sometimes we want to spontaneously change our hair colour completely for no reason whatsoever! But when you have walls of box dyes that claim to be the best for your hair, it can be confusing. So we've taken the guesswork out so that you can spend more time admiring the new you.
