Let’s start off with a bit more of an explanation, should the purpose of these clever pieces of silicone still be a mystery to you. Essentially, they’re a substitute for tin foil or cling film, and can be stretched over bowls, containers, serving dishes, pans, and baking trays to protect and cover them.
They’ll keep the air out and the freshness in, and can be used many times over so are a brilliant eco-friendly alternative. Imagine also a world where you don’t have to deal with the cling film or foil bunching up or unravelling in broken strips: this is the world of silicone stretch lids.
And finally, they’re great for replacing any Tupperware lids that have inevitably disappeared somewhere, so their bottoms will actually be useful again. You don’t have to match their exact size to the container you want to cover, so no more hunting for the right lids either.
Now that you know a bit about these nifty kitchen accessories, we’ll get onto the buying guide. There are a few small-but-important factors that can make some lids a hit and others a complete miss, so keep on reading to ensure you end up with a set that’ll stay in your cupboards for years.
Go for a smaller set if you like the idea of having some around for when you need them, but don’t find yourself reaching for the cling film all that often. Or perhaps you’d prefer a set of only a few lids if you live alone and find yourself always having to wrap up half an onion or a half-tin of baked beans.
If you’re part of a large household, a serial batch cooker, or a meal prepper who likes to get ahead with their fuel for the week, we’d suggest going for a greater amount. To be honest, the sets are such good value and they’re so useful that even if you end up with too many you’ll never feel like you’ve wasted your money!
Do you have a serving dish you use almost every day for family dinners, which usually ends up with leftovers? Maybe you’re a keen baker who wants to cover up your bread tin, or you want to use the lids for cut fruit and veg of varying sizes as well as your lunch for the next day.
Whichever way you slice it, you’ll probably need a few different sizes, so as a general rule, go for lids an inch or so either side of the containers. For example, if the bowl you wrap up every night is 5 inches, you’ll want to include a lid or two of 4-6 inches.
Coloured lids can be a nifty way of organising the contents of your fridge, freezer, or cupboard. For example, a mixed household of vegetarians and meat eaters could each have their own colours to differentiate between meals, or you could keep raw and cooked meat separate to avoid contamination. You can also look for sets with more than one colour if you need to.
On the other hand, clear lids can allow you to see what’s inside, meaning you won’t have to take off and reattach each lid to find what you’re looking for. Some coloured lids may be more sheer than others, so have a look through the product photos to be sure.
However, before you buy the cheapest set you can find, we’d advise going for food-grade silicone, which will denote that the lids have been tested for safety and quality.
They will also be more durable so will withstand frequent usage for longer, though it never hurts to scan through the reviews to see what other shoppers have to say about the durability.
Some lids may be able to withstand different temperatures than others, so do note if the lids are able to be frozen or used in the oven before you decide on a product. On top of this, it pays to double-check if the lids you like are dishwasher-safe, particularly if you rely on yours to clean up most days.
They also boast a 0.5 mm thickness, which is more robust than most lids on the market, and have a 5-layer sealing ring to help them stay put. The various sizes included should fit just about anything you need them to, with the largest even being suitable for a large saucepan or pot.
They’re suitable for the dishwasher, freezer and oven but only up to temperatures of 200 degrees celsius, so care should be taken when baking with them. Also, while the price isn’t the cheapest, they are food-grade and good quality.
Feeling good about ditching single-use cling film for something that's kinder to the planet and your wallet? Kit out the rest of your cupboards with more of our suggestions for easy reusable and plastic-free kitchen swaps.
Thanks to this very simple but clever invention, you can save yourself some money and reduce your plastic waste whilst still ensuring your food stays fresh and protected. We hope you’ve got a better grip on what properties make for the most suitable silicone lid set for your kitchen!
