They’re lightweight, happy to get wet (great for communal showers as well as dips in the sea), and can be plain or colourful to suit different tastes. There are even some designer options if you’re that way inclined, but you’ll find this variety the most budget-friendly on the whole.
A fabric or fabric-lined toe post will also reduce uncomfortable rubbing and blisters between the toes, so it’s worth looking out for this feature if you’ve had painful experiences on this front in the past.
A bonus of leather straps is that they’ll usually be thicker, and therefore more supportive, although slightly hotter for the feet than rubber or fabric.
Alternatively, synthetic leather will be more breathable and resistant to water whilst still looking just as smart.
Footbeds with heel indentations will also help with arch support, as they will actually reduce the flipping and flopping of the sandal, enabling you to walk more naturally and give your toes a break from gripping too hard to stay in place.
Textured “egg crate” footbeds are a design feature cropping up more and more in flip flops, and will be worth seeking out to add a boost of squishy comfort whilst also acting as a grip for your feet atop the sandals.
With this in mind, it's worth noting whether the pair you like are safe for use in water, or if a few splashes are fine but complete submersion may end up damaging the sole or strap material.
To save you from slips and skids, you may also want to assess the quality of grip or traction of the soles, particularly if you want a pair suitable for taking on adventures involving water. The more treads you can see will equate to a better grip level, especially if they run fairly deep and are multi-directional.
A good tip when buying online is to check out the manufacturers’ sizing charts, in case the brand runs bigger or smaller compared to your usual size. A fit on the snug side is preferred, as your flops will loosen over time.
Surprisingly, flip flops will actually benefit from a breaking in period, even the cheaper varieties. If you’re heading on holiday, try walking around in them for a few days to help them adjust, even if it’s just in the house. You’ll notice the difference, especially in models designed to mould to your shape with wear.
Most synthetic flops are even machine washable, so you can throw them on a cold or delicate cycle if they’re beginning to smell less-than-fresh.
Heading off on a trip? Whether you're hitting up Cornwall for a surfing session or planning a romantic city break, there always seems to be something else that needs buying before you leave. Fortunately, we've got some recommendations for those too!
