Table of Contents
When it comes to journals, especially five-minute journals, there's no one size fits all. Most follow the theme of gratitude, including daily prompts that aim to improve your overall happiness and positivity. However, not all follow the same format. Start your search for the perfect journal by deciding on a theme that will help improve your life.
Some 5-minute journal layouts repeat the same few prompts each day, whilst others feature completely unique pages. Repeating the same prompt, such as "list three things you're grateful for", tends to make the habit of journalling easier to follow as you know what will come up each day.
However, the repetition can get a little boring. If you think you'll end up quitting your journal practice because of this reason, search for one that contains unique prompts and questions every day, such as "A new door that opened for me recently..." or "One of the best parts about being me...". This will keep journalling much more interesting!
Morning prompts are useful for injecting a little positive thinking into the start of each day, helping you to get into a good headspace. These could be in the form of positive affirmations, or gratitude lists.
Affirmations are statements or declarations that you repeat to yourself to help you get in the right mindset for the day ahead. An example would be "I am getting better every day", or "All I need is within me right now".
Gratitude Lists are another great way to start the day. At first, writing a gratitude list might seem a little pointless, but over time, the amount of things you're grateful for builds. Slowly but surely, you'll start becoming aware of just how wonderful your life is.
On the other hand, evening prompts give you the opportunity to reflect on your day which, according to experts, is the real route to progression. Without reflection, you may not realise what went well and what didn't and, therefore, won't know what areas you need to improve.
If this sounds like something you might benefit from, look for journals with evening reflection prompts. These usually include spaces for listing your main "highlights of the day", or somewhere to note "what did I learn today" or "what could be improved". Some even go one step further, allowing you to plan for the next day.

The 5 Minute Journal
A Basic Layout With a Modern Style for Those Who Value Simplicity
We highly recommend this very popular five minute journal by Sophia Godkin. While the overall focus is on gratitude, every day features a different prompt. You'll find daily prompts like "A reason to smile right now....", or "One way I'm already living the life I want....".
Rather than repeating the usual "3 things I'm grateful for", or "3 things I'm looking forward to", this journal enables you to look at your life in multiple ways. This really helps to add perspective and infuses positivity in every direction. Each page also begins with an inspiring quote to start off your day!
Here is one of the most popular five-minute journals in the UK. With a 4.5 star rating, 10,000 reviews on Amazon and over 1.3 million copies sold, it must be doing something right! This journal ensures you spend your writing time focused on the positivity in your life, by practising gratitude for what you have.
Each page has five quick sections to fill out - three for the morning to get you in a good headspace for the rest of the day, and two for the evening, to reflect on how it went. It also features inspirational quotes at the top of each page and weekly challenges to amp up the fun factor!
This is another journal that veers away from the norm. Instead of repeating the same few questions every day, this journal provides you with just one journal prompt, question or idea to reflect upon. Included are things like "visualise your future" or "what's your story?".
If you tend to get bored by "write three things" journals, this is an excellent choice. It really makes you reflect on your life in a way that you've likely never thought of, and allows you to look at your life in a variety of different ways. Essentially, it keeps things new!
Most gratitude journals are geared towards adults, but who's to say children can't benefit too? This 5-minute journal was created specifically for children, to help them live a more positive life and get them excited about the days ahead. By journalling regularly, they'll learn to build positive, life-changing habits that will stick.
Another journal developed by Intelligent Change, it has a very similar layout to their adult offering in terms of the prompts. However, this one includes more colourful pages to engage a younger audience and simple explanations that they can understand clearly.
While this is a 6-minute journal, we thought it was close enough that it deserved a spot on our list. Plus, you can easily get it done in 5 minutes if you wanted to! The pages are split into morning and evening sections, with the morning prompts focusing on things that will make you feel positive and the evening prompts focusing on reflection.
We love the look of this journal, especially as it's a solid hardback with beautifully laid-out pages and an aesthetically-pleasing font. There are also slightly more in-depth weekly pages to help reflect on the entire week, and a 70 page introduction explaining the science behind the process.
Compared to the other on this list, this journal is an absolute bargain! For its extremely low price, you get 90-days of journal prompts with each day is split into morning and evening. However, this one also includes a space to plan your goals for the next day as well as a mood tracker, which is a nice addition.
While three months isn't that long if you keep it up every day, for this price, you can't complain. You'll even benefit from monthly reflection pages that allow you to evaluate any excuses you made for not completing goals and projects, along with space for planning your next monthly goals.
This 5-minute journal focuses on goals, rather than journalling. The daily pages feature simple checklists to help you get the most out of your day, provide a place to plan your to-do list, and areas to note your sleep, exercise and water intakes.
Weekly sections track your habits, plan your goals for the next week and review your past week. The book even contains a full guided introduction that helps you map out your goals, values and aspirations, to help you become more aligned and balanced within your life.
This one is a 10-minute journal, hence why it's so far down on our list. Nevertheless, if you've got the time to spare, this is an excellent choice. The layout focuses more on tracking, allowing you to simply tick boxes relating to your mood, symptoms and sleeping patterns, rather than journal your thoughts.
Of course, it also includes space for the usual gratitude lists, evening reflections and plans for tomorrow. Unfortunately, despite being a journal, there isn't much writing involved. That said, if you're only after quick daily reflections, this is a great buy.
Ahmed Wunderlich's journal features 120 pages of prompts that include gratitude lists, goals for the day and affirmations. The evening section prompts you to list a few things that went well, what you could've done better, and what you're looking forward to tomorrow.
We like that this book has a cute cover design. Although, it may not appeal to everyone. The only major downside is that you can't view inside the book before you purchase, making it a bit of a gamble. However, at such a low price, you still might be willing to take a punt!
Finally, we recommend this 5-minute journal from Positive Vibes Book Club. The book features a stylish marble-esq cover and a nice modern font for those who value aesthetics when it comes to notebooks and stationery.
While this journal includes all the standard prompts for gratitude, affirmations and daily goals, the layout is very basic. This may be ideal for some, but if you're looking for something a bit more in-depth, there are plenty of better choices out there.
