How to Choose Truffle Infused Products in the UK

Key Points to Consider
  1. Look For Real Truffle in the Ingredients for a More Intense Flavour
  2. Choose Truffle-Infused Products That Best Suit How You'll Eat or Prepare Them
  3. Opt For Low-Sodium Products for a Healthier Option

Choose Products With Real Truffle for a Punchy Taste or Keep It Subtle With Flavourings

Choose Products With Real Truffle for a Punchy Taste or Keep It Subtle With Flavourings

Truffles are small round fungi that can be found under the soil in particular regions of the world. They are extremely sought after because their aroma induces our brains to release pheromones, similar to falling in love. Their flavour is difficult to describe but some liken it to a mixture of garlic and shallots with a deep, earthy taste. Truffles can be found in two different colours, black and white.

Generally, white truffles are more expensive as they have a deeper, richer flavour, but that is not to say black truffles are not delicious. However, some people do find the flavour a bit overpowering, so before you decide on truffle-infused products, it is best to consider how rich you would like the taste to be.

If you desire a powerful hit, go for products that are infused with real truffles. Or, if you like the truffle flavour but don't want it too strong, look for products that have artificial or natural flavourings that provide the truffle taste but without the punch you get from the pure ingredient itself.

Get to Know the Different Types of Truffle Products and How They Can Be Cooked or Enjoyed

Nowadays there are so many truffle-infused products on the market, we're spoilt for choice. However, there is no point in stocking up on all the tempting goodies if they are going to sit at the back of the cupboard untouched. Choose items that will work well with your lifestyle and that you can get plenty of enjoyment out of. Here are some of the most popular options:

  • Truffle-infused oils: The perfect option for those that are fans of using plenty of olive oil in their cooking. Truffle-infused oils provide an extra dimension of flavour, meaning you can add it to all the recipes you would usually add olive oil to while increasing the richness and diversity of the food.

  • Truffle-infused cheese: Many of us are cheese lovers, and there is arguably nothing better than ending a big meal with a delectable cheeseboard. So, introducing a truffle-infused cheese to the mix can be an excellent way of trying something new without detracting too much from the food you would usually opt for.

  • Truffle-infused snacks: Another excellent way of trying something different without changing how you normally eat or cook. Nowadays, you can find a huge range of such as truffle-infused crisps or popcorn. Instead of reaching for your regular flavours, why not add the truffle version to your trolley for a new taste sensation that may just become a firm favourite?

  • Truffle-infused meat and fish: When we cook, we add herbs and spices or marinades to our proteins to up the flavour. By infusing the meat and fish, it is effectively marinated in truffle, which will add a delectable flavour to your dish.

Truffle Products Can Be Salty, so Look For Healthier Low-Sodium Options Where Possible

Truffle Products Can Be Salty, so Look For Healthier Low-Sodium Options Where Possible

Whilst truffle products are packed with flavour, they are often also packed with salt, particularly if artificial flavourings are involved. It is advised that adults eat no more than 6 g, and children even less at between 2-3 g depending on age. Keep an eye on sodium content when choosing infused products, and if it is high, be sure to keep them as an occasional treat rather than an everyday food.

A Flavour-Packed Oil Infused With Real White Truffles

We couldn't ask for a better product for our number one spot. This stunning oil is packed full of flavour due to the real cold-pressed white truffle that is infused in the delicious extra virgin olive oil. Unlike those with artificial flavouring, this oil is so flavoursome it adds a delicious richness to cooking and is perfect to drizzle over potatoes, soup or salads.

Even better, this product is suitable for vegans as well as being gluten-free, nut-free and with no added MSG. Available in two different-sized bottles, it is also very reasonable given there are real white truffles in the mix.

A Gourmet Vintage Cheddar With a Black Truffle Punch

There is something so wholesome about sitting down with a block of British cheddar, but this block goes one step further with the addition of black truffle oil added during the manufacturing process. The oil, made up of real black truffles and olive oil, provides a deliciously rich flavour without being too overpowering.

Whilst so many products are laced with additives, the makers at Godminster have kept to traditional cheese-making techniques using only natural ingredients. This gourmet product also supports local, British businesses, so you can't go wrong!

Tyrrells are already in the forefront of crisp production here in the UK, making a name for themselves where 'posh' crisps are concerned. It comes as no surprise to hear that their black truffle and sea salt-infused crisps are definitely following suit as a firm snacking favourite

These crisps have been made from black truffle and Porcini mushroom powder, to coat the crisps with a flavour that is hard to step away from. Perfect for a party or picnic, they don't contain any dairy ingredients and are gluten-free.

Perfect for an Easy Yet Luxurious Mid-Week Meal

Let's face it, we have all reached for a jar of pesto to throw into pasta for a quick mid-week meal. This one goes the extra mile, however – with a blend of black truffles from Piedmont, artichokes from Puglia and aged Parmigiano Reggiano, this is no ordinary pesto!

As the flavours are so rich, you really don't need much to create the desired effect, so the jar will easily last. Why not try it on steaks, in mash or as a soup topping? Gluten-free and indulgent, it makes for an easy yet impressive meal for guests too.

Another one for the cheese lovers amongst us, we just could not make a list of truffle products without featuring this beautiful brie from Castello. With real chunks of truffle running throughout, this is pure joy for your taste buds.

A Tasty Truffle Butter for Cooking and Spreading

Infused with black truffle and no other ingredients or additives, this delicious Italian butter makes for the perfect partner in the kitchen. And while it is tasty to have on its own, spread over toast, it also goes well with a huge range of meals from steaks to scrambled eggs.

With its lovely rich flavour and artisan production, this is definitely one for the real truffle fans. This butter is vegetarian, nut-free and surprisingly affordable given the quality of ingredients.

A Decedent Snack Infused With Truffle Flavouring

Made from a mix of almonds, cashews, pecans and macadamias roasted in Pecorino Romano cheese and sprinkled with white truffle, these nuts are simply delicious. They incorporate truffle flavouring, rather than the real thing, but the taste is so scrumptious we couldn't leave them off.

As with many nuts, there is a high salt content here, so these are only really suitable for the occasional treat. They are fairly pricey too given the quantity, but we're confident you won't regret buying them!

A Dinner-Party-Ready Saucisson Cured in France

The name Waitrose goes hand in hand with top-quality food and this cured sausage does not disappoint. Made in France with pork and truffle pieces to infuse flavour into the meat during the curing process, this is perfect for tapas or to add to stews and soups.

The salt content here is also very high, but the deep rich flavours of the meat make it well worth getting in for a special occasion or dinner party. This product may contain nuts and milk due to the manufacturing process, so do be careful if you have allergies.

Subtle, Truffle-Cured Smoked Salmon for Fish Lovers

Another truffle-infused product from Waitrose's superb No.1 range, this smoked salmon is one of their newest creations but we hope it is here to stay. The salmon has been covered with truffle oil, made from real truffles mixed with virgin olive oil, before curing.

If we had one complaint, we would say we would like even more of the delicious truffle flavour, but this makes it another good pick for those experimenting with truffle. It's also a little on the pricey side for the size of the packet, but again, definitely worth it.
