How to Choose Bunk Beds in the UK – Buying Guide

In this section, we’ll explore the features to look out for, such as the dimensions and number of beds. We've also included a few things that you might not even have considered, such as the finish, weight capacity and whether a mattress is included.

1

How Many Beds Do You Need? Choose Between Single Bunks or a Triple Sleeper

There are a few different styles concerning bunk beds, but we’ll be focussing on the classic types, which sleep either two or three. That does mean we haven't included any high sleeper beds, but we have a dedicated article for those if that’s something you’d be interested in.

Single Bunks Can Often Be Split Into Two Single Beds

Single Bunks Can Often Be Split Into Two Single Beds

The frame that sleeps two is undoubtedly the most famous of all designs. They feature two single beds on top of one another, usually with a small ladder to access the top bunk. These are designed with children in mind, so they'll be shorter and slimmer, but some slighter adults will also comfortably fit.

Furthermore, many of these frames convert into two single beds, which is great for the future if you happen to move to a home with more space. These are generally the most economical of all options, depending on the brand and materials used. Plus, they’re also the most likely design to come with additional storage.

Triple-Sleepers Offer an Extra Sleeping Space

The other popular option is a three-sleeper bunk. These have a double mattress on the bottom and a single on top. This style is perfect if you have social children who like having friends to stay, or if you’re buying a bunk for a guest room. As you’d expect, more materials come with more cost, so these tend to be a little more expensive.

There is also the option of three-sleepers that provide a third bed as a trundle. This means that the frame would be a classic single bunk, but the design would incorporate a third roll-out mattress underneath. These are an even greater space-saving hack, but they do eat into your chances of having any storage around the bed frame.

2

The Material Will Affect the Finish and Cost

The Material Will Affect the Finish and Cost

Next up, you’ll want to consider the different finishes and materials available, and there’s two out and out winners – wood and metal. Wooden frames are usually made from hardwearing wood such as pinewood or rubberwood and come with the choice of either a natural or painted finish.

When talking about painted finishes, you can generally expect to see neutral colours such as white, black or grey. As well as providing a bit of shine and luxe, the paint also offers protection to the wood.

On the other hand, metal is great if you're going for a minimal or industrial aesthetic. These frames are easier to clean, which is always handy with children, and will be painted with a powder-coated finish to ensure their longevity. Plus, metal is often a little cheaper than wood, so it's a great choice if you're working with a tight budget.

3

Consider the Bed’s Storage Options

Consider the Bed’s Storage Options

As we mentioned, the chances are you’re purchasing a pair (or trio) of bunk beds to save some space, but it's not only bed space that these beauties save! These frames often have other space-saving features, such as storage, that are usually in the form of a few drawers underneath the bottom bunk.

Now and then, you'll find one that will provide a bit more storage such as a small wardrobe. Unfortunately, however, these units are often quite large and cumbersome, making them difficult to place in smaller rooms and they don't provide the flexibility that other frames do. This might be perfectly fine for your space, but again, it all comes down to accurate measuring and planning.

4

Measure Both the Room and the Beds

Measure Both the Room and the Beds

Next, it’s time to start thinking about the practical side of things, such as the dimensions. This will mean measuring the room and where you’d plan on placing the bunk beds.

You’ll want to measure the floor area and the floor-to-ceiling. From there, cross-check this with the bed frames and their dimensions. Many people advise that you should leave around 75 cm between the top bunk mattress and the ceiling to protect anyone from banging their head if they jolt awake during the night.

However, this isn’t all. The children or guests need to use a ladder to climb in and out of the top bunk. These ladders are sometimes slanted, which can take up additional floor space, so make sure you consider this when measuring the dimensions.

5

For Safety, Check the Weight Capacity

For Safety, Check the Weight Capacity

It’s worth stating that most bunk beds have a weight capacity that will be more than adequate for holding children, young adults and small adults. Unless you’re looking for a bunk bed for a heavier person, chances are you’ll be alright. That said, you'll need to be a little careful when your kids have friends over, and they decide to all bundle in the top!

Unfortunately, some companies don't provide specifics, but we were able to get this information from some options. Generally speaking, you can expect the weight limit to be between 70 – 120 kg, which is plenty for most children.

6

Look For an Included Mattress if You’re on a Tight Budget

Look For an Included Mattress if You’re on a Tight Budget

Finally, if you’re looking to cut down on your spending, opting for a frame that comes with a mattress is always going to help. It’s worth pointing out that the cost of the frame and mattress together will be higher than just a frame, but buying as a combo will likely be cheaper than separately.

Sadly, this is a little uncommon, but there are a few options here and there. While we can’t 100% confirm this, chances are, the mattresses provided by the bunk company will not be quite as comfortable as if you sourced one yourself, so do set your expectations accordingly.

The Quintessential Single Bunk Beds

The Josie bunk beds from Argos Home are possibly the most quintessential single bunk beds we've seen. They're more on the smaller side, making them perfect for children who share a room or want an extra bed ready for sleepovers.

The ladders are flexible and can fit on either side of the bed, and the weight capacity should offer more than enough for most children. It's a straightforward design, but if you're looking for a bed, what more do you need?

A Triple Sleeper With Included Mattresses

This triple-sleeper from Comfy Living comes with practically all the specifications one could want from a three-sleeper. The design has decent dimensions that are neither too small nor too large, and it has a respectful weight capacity.

The frame is made of solid pine wood, and while we went for the painted white, you can also opt for the natural wood finish. Best of all, the mattresses are included, which is excellent value for this price. If you simply don't need them, though, there's also the option to leave them out. Choices, choices, choices!

An Almost All-in-One Piece of Bedroom Furniture

If you're putting together a new bedroom for your children and would prefer a situation where you could get the majority of the furniture in one go, then look no further. This offering from Parisot contains two single beds capable of holding up to 70 kg, a wardrobe, a rail and even a storage drawer.

It's cumbersome, as you'd expect, so it could be difficult for some homes to find a way to make the beds fit. However, if there is enough room, then you'll have saved yourself a lot of work by opting for this almost all-in-one piece of bedroom furniture.

Add a Touch of Natural Wood to a Contemporary Home

Another offering from the impressive Strictly Beds and Bunks, but this time it's their take on the triple-sleeper. We particularly love the natural wood finish on this one as it can work wonderfully in a whole range of different styled rooms. It is also perfect for adding a touch of character to a contemporary white-based home.

The design has two large storage compartments under the lower bunk, a flat rung ladder and an enormous 254 kg weight capacity. Plus, it's all British made, meaning it's much better for the environment, and you'll be supporting local businesses. What could be better than that?

A Low-Sitting Bed With a Comfy Ladder

If you live in a home with low ceilings, then the legs on bunk beds will take up precious space. Thankfully, Strictly Beds and Bunks thought about this and created the Stockton Low Sleeper. This design sits flat to the floor, giving you those precious centimetres back where you might need them up top.

Another feature that stood out to us is the ladder design. The company use thick, flat rungs, which make them that little bit comfier for those clambering up to the top bunk - and that could be almost anyone thanks to the decent weight capacity!

The 90s Teenage Dream With a Sofa-Come-Double-Bed

Here, we have what was essentially a teenager's dream in the 90s. The versatile design allows the bottom bunk to be either a double mattress or a sofa, depending on the situation. It would work just as well for groups staying in the family home as it would for a child or teenager's bedroom.

Furthermore, if you're not confident in putting the bed together yourself, there's the option to pay for assembly on arrival - although that will cost you a pretty penny! Also, as this is a hooked ladder, you will need to factor in the additional floor space.

Solid Bunk Beds and Storage Designed to Last

Made from durable materials, this solid bunk bed was built to last. It has a very respectable weight capacity of 120 kg (around 18 stone), and you'll find a pull-out storage drawer under the bottom bunk. This drawer uses lasting and reliable casters, ensuring you'll always have access to your tucked-away goods.

We love the simple style of this one, as it makes the frame perfectly suitable for a wide range of homes. The only thing that lets us down is the ladder. As the first step is quite high off the ground, it might not be very good for small children.

An Intuitive Design That Allows You to Split the Bunks

Built using solid pinewood and sturdy MDF, this single bunk bed from Stompa is ideal for smaller rooms due to its modest dimensions. Moreover, the company have used an intuitive, split design that allows you to separate the two bunks if you'd like the option.

Another part worth mentioning is that although the design doesn't provide any storage options, there's approximately 25 cm between the base of the lower bunk and the floor, so you could easily slip under some additional storage boxes. It might not be the biggest option available, but it does the job!

A No-Frills Option That Comfortably Sleeps Three

If you're looking for a traditional three-sleeper, but you'd prefer a no-frills option, maybe because it's for guests rather than everyday use, then GFW has a treat for you! This metal-framed bunk is sturdy, robust, and has steel slats to ensure that body weight is distributed evenly among the mattresses.

Sadly, we couldn't find a direct weight limit for the bed, but we did notice previous buyers stating that it is rather lightweight, so you might want to be careful. That said, this is a lot of bed for the money!

Plenty of Sleeping Options Covering Minimal Floorspace

This offering from Stompa is a sturdy single bunk structure with a cheeky third trundle bed. You're getting the optimum number of sleeping options whilst not taking over the whole floor space. On top of this, the bed can split if and when you need it to, giving you even more sleeping choices.

There is a pretty big downside, though - the price. This is an expensive option as it costs the best part of £1000, which is tremendously high compared to our other options. Still, if you have the money and need the space, then we're sure you'll be impressed by the craftsmanship

Summary

So, there it is, our comprehensive guide to finding the perfect bunk bed. We hope you found the information and tips helpful, and fingers crossed, these lead you to find the perfect new sleeping solution for your home. Here's to a peaceful nights sleep for everyone!
