All helmets are designed to protect your head from any bumps, falls, and scrapes that might happen when you're out on your bike, but the specific style will vary depending on the sort of cycling that it's designed for. There are four main categories that helmets can fall into: road, mountain, BMX, and leisure.
Road helmets are probably the most versatile of the lot as they're very sturdy and have plenty of vents to keep you cool while you ride. Mountain helmets also feature ventilation holes, plus they have lots of cushioning and some will feature a visor at the front to protect your eyes from dirt or sunlight.
On the other hand, BMX helmets look more like those that you'd see skateboarders and roller skaters wear - they're generally more solid with limited ventilation. Lastly, leisure helmets are the most lightweight option, making them appropriate for cycling around cities at a slower pace.
To keep your bike safe no matter where you park, get yourself a lightweight bike lock!
The size of a bike helmet is usually measured in centimetres or sometimes described as small, medium, or large. This measurement refers to the circumference of your head. However, as this is something that not many people know off the top of theirs, it's worth getting out a tape measure and checking before you start shopping!
A helmet should feel tight but not uncomfortably so. To work out whether yours fits correctly, shake your head from side to side while wearing it. Ideally, it should move no more than an inch either way.

You may come across certain brands that give a range of head circumference measurements rather than a single measurement. This could be due to the removable padding, but often it's because the band inside the helmet is actually adjustable. An adjustable band typically has a dial that you can twist, allowing you to tweak the fit until it's secure and comfortable - definitely something to look out for when browsing online!
The bulk of a cycle helmet is made from hard plastics and materials like polystyrene, which certainly aren't the most comfortable of materials. Luckily, manufacturers have taken this into consideration and many fill the inside of their helmets with some sort of foam padding.
The level of padding does vary enormously though; helmets without many vents tend to have more padding as it doesn't have to be shaped around the holes, whereas well-ventilated sports helmets will have less. Sometimes the padding is removable and washable too, which is handy as far as hygiene is concerned!
As well as securing your helmet around your head, you also need to secure it around your chin to stop it from flying off if you come into contact with anything. Most helmets use a clip or a side release buckle as a way of securing the straps in place.
You want these straps to be tight (but not too tight) and each side should fit comfortably around your ears. When doing up your strap, be careful not to clip any skin on your face or finger as it can be pretty painful!

This helmet is exactly what you need if you like to switch between fast road cycling and going at a more leisurely pace. There are 14 air vents to give your head breathing space, a visor to protect your eyes, and reflective strips to keep you safe at night.
The design of this helmet is sporty yet chic, and the huge range of colours available means you can pick your favourite - maybe even one that matches your cycling gear! Best of all, there's plenty of padding throughout this helmet and on the straps, making it the most comfortable option on our list.
Another well-ventilated helmet, this product is great for warm days or long cycling sessions. In addition to 24 air vents, this helmet provides top-quality cushioning in the form of a removable liner that also covers the chin strap.
All of the adjustable features are simple too, so there's no need to faff around before you get on your bike. The visor is removable so you can tailor your helmet to suit the weather, while the inner band can be tweaked until it's just right. A brilliant buy!
This helmet's huge number of air vents is just one of many reasons why you'll want to snap it up! It's great for road cycling but can also double up as a mountain bike helmet thanks to its substantial visor and ample padding.
If you're worried about being seen at night, this helmet has the answer in the form of a USB-rechargeable light in the back, which will make sure that motorists and other cyclists know that you're there - so you can stay super safe at all times!
It's something that is so often overlooked, even in helmets that are designed with women in mind - where are you going to put your hair? Those who cycle for sport usually prefer to put long hair up in a ponytail, but this can be uncomfortable if your helmet is not compatible.
Luckily, that's something this product by Rockrider has given some thought to - simply pull your ponytail through the space that's provided and you'll be ready to ride! The removable foam padding and adjustable band also make this helmet extra comfy to wear while you're out in the mountains.
This sleek, sage green helmet will keep you looking super cool while you casually cycle around the city. Despite being pretty solid, it still has a few small air vents that'll allow air to circulate around your head while you're on the move.
We love the impressive environmental credentials of this product, with the brand encouraging you to recycle your helmet when it's time for a new one and giving you money off as a thank you! Plus, unlike other helmets on our list, the strap uses magnets for closure which reduces the chance of you accidentally clipping your skin.
Although it's perhaps not the most exciting-looking helmet out there, this option still has a lot to offer. It's excellent for running errands in urban areas, with reflective highlights that make sure you're still seen when the sun starts to go down.
The visor is removable, in case you don't feel like you need it on an overcast day, which means this helmet can be used in all types of weather. Sure, the plain black design is a bit dull, but this is an affordable and versatile option!
Speedy cyclists will love this helmet for its large air vents which allow for maximum breathability without compromising on safety. Plus, the washable padding means mean you can keep your helmet hygienic - perfect after a long ride on a hot day!
Just make sure that you put plenty of reflective gear on when going out at night as this helmet doesn't have any visibility aids. It also lacks a visor, so you might struggle with heavy rain or bright sunshine.
Think of yourself as a bit of a thrill-seeker? It's extra important that the helmet on your head is tough enough to protect you from any falls. This helmet has thick, multi-density foam that absorbs energy on impact, so it'll definitely do the trick!
Designed with off-road mountain biking in mind, this lovely purple helmet is lightweight as well as protective. Sadly though, the sizing range is quite limited so not everyone will find this product comfortable to wear.
If you're a commuter or just someone who finds themselves cycling around a lot at night, it's crucial to you make sure you can be properly seen by other people. A helmet like this, with lights on both the front and the back, is a brilliant way to stand out!
Despite ticking most of the boxes when it comes to features that you'd want a helmet to have, this product does have a few drawbacks - it's incredibly heavy and has a high price tag that may put some cyclists off!
This helmet is best suited to cyclists who like BMX or pulling off stunts at the skate park. It doesn't have a visor getting in the way, which makes it more suitable for this kind of biking, but this also means there's less weather protection.
It may have a solid shell, but this helmet still features 12 air vents to keep you cool as you ride around. Unfortunately, the range of head sizes that this helmet covers isn't huge, which might exclude some BMX fans from being able to wear it.
You should always replace your helmet after 5 years of use to ensure safety. If your helmet becomes damaged, either in a crash or from being dropped, it definitely needs replacing. Although it doesn't look damaged, knocks and bumps can affect its structural integrity and protective properties.
