Finding a foundation that gives a flawless finish can be tricky - especially if you're working with dry or oily skin, or even combination skin with various issues. Foundation is used for more than just covering up imperfections though; it can also help to highlight your natural beauty and may include added SPF to protect your complexion.
You've probably seen foundation in liquid, powder, and mousse formats, but you might not be familiar with stick ones. While they look like lipstick on the outside, on the inside you'll find a creamy formula that can be used to cover acne and contour your face. Whether you have pale or dark skin, we've hunted through the best stick foundations that Amazon, John Lewis, ASOS, and Boots have to offer, so you can find the perfect match in minutes!

There are many reasons that you might choose a stick foundation over other types - after all, they're easy to store and quick to apply! To find the right one though, you'll need to consider a few key factors like your skin type and the kind of finish you prefer.
Dry skin needs added moisture to prevent further dehydration; in a foundation, this can be found in the form of hydrating ingredients like vitamin E as well as soothing botanical oils and extracts.
Oily skin, on the other hand, requires moisture control - otherwise, your complexion can look greasy. As the majority of stick foundations have a matte finish, they're great at keeping oiliness to a minimum.
Stick foundations have a creamy texture that melts with the warmth of the skin, making application seamless and never cakey. You can alter the foundation stick to suit your skin by choosing the right finish and targetting concerns with primers and powders.
For oily skin, you can still achieve a natural, glowy look by applying a radiant primer underneath or a highlighter on top. Don't be afraid to play around with additional products to create the desired look for your skin type and occasion.
Not all stick foundations provide the same finish or have the same level of protection from the elements. Depending on where and when you want to use yours, you'll need to think about these details too.
While stick foundations are typically made from a cream formulation, they can vary in terms of how they turn out once applied to the skin. As with other types of foundation, some formulas will create a dewy look that'll give your skin a gorgeous natural glow. This finish doesn't always benefit those with oily skin though, as they already have plenty of shine.
At the other end of the spectrum, you have products that provide a matte finish - as we mentioned earlier, this is the majority of stick foundations. Matte formulas usually offer better coverage and work well with oilier complexions, but they can make dry skin look lacklustre.
Most matte foundation sticks will apply with a creamy texture and set to a smooth powder finish, meanings additional setting powders aren't required unless you get extremely oily. Often, more long-wearing, matte foundation sticks are preferred for acne-prone skin as the drier texture will stick and stay to conceal imperfections.
Dewy foundation sticks will glide onto the skin and offer a moisturised finish that can be reapplied throughout the day. Packed with extra skin-care benefits, some glowy foundations are blended with oils such as macadamia and olive extracts which actively work to improve the skins surface.
The level of coverage that a foundation provides is partly in your hands, as many formulas can be built up in layers - this allows you to control how much product you use while covering any blemishes or pores.
However, some stick foundations have a lightweight formula that only offers subtle coverage. These are great if you still want to be able to see your skin beneath or you're using your stick as a touch-up tool, but they won't fully conceal all of your issues.
If you want a bit more from your stick foundation, look for one that provides medium or full coverage. Medium coverage is a brilliant choice because it allows you to build up your base layer but can be applied lightly if you're having a good skin day. Or, for a totally flawless complexion that's perfect for taking selfies, pick a full-coverage product.
Often you'll find matte foundation sticks provide a higher level of coverage as they have a drier texture, making dewier products more natural and skin-like. To add extra coverage to your complexion use a heavier concealer just in the areas that you need it, this technique means you will use less foundation, allowing your skin to breathe whilst looking flawless.
There's no reason why a swimming session should ruin the glamorous face of makeup that you've just applied! By ensuring that the formula you buy is waterproof, you'll be able to splash around to your heart's content knowing that your foundation will stay firmly in place.
A waterproof stick foundation is super handy when you're on holiday, as not only does it hold fast when you go for a dip but it should also be resistant to sweat and general humidity in the atmosphere.
Waterproof make-up has a high level of wax which naturally repels water, keeping your make-up perfect in all conditions. For extra durability, spray a make-up sponge with some setting spray and blend it out.
Just remember you won't be able to use a wet sponge to apply the waterproof foundation stick so opt for a brush or dry sponge with setting spray instead.
The British Association of Dermatologists recommends that we wear SPF every day and ideally, it should be factor 30 or higher. Putting on sun cream each day can be a bit of a chore though, which is why it's so convenient when SPF is included in some stick foundations.
Although you're unlikely to find really high levels of SPF in a makeup product, it's not too difficult to find sticks with an SPF of around 20. This added layer of protection will stop you from getting sunburnt and damaging your skin, as well as preventing premature ageing.
For daily wear, SPF infused make-up will not only protect from burning but also act as a barrier against environmental stressors. Make sure you check which sunscreen is in your foundation; chemical or mineral, as sunscreen allergies are very common. For evenings or occasion wear opt for a foundation without SPF to avoid flashbacks in photos.
For far too long, it has been difficult for people with very pale or dark skin to find a shade of foundation that works for them. Many makeup lovers have had to mix two different shades or add light-reflecting drops to their existing products, in an attempt to create a hue that looks similar to their natural complexion.
In recent years, some beauty brands have thankfully listened to our pleas and created a wider range of shades to suit more skin tones, making it easier for everyone to find the perfect match for their face.
Today you can find a large shade range as brands are expected to cater for all skin tones. As the colour options use natural skin tones, foundation sticks are also a great option for cream concealing and contouring.
Take your foundation stick shade and try one or two shades lighter to brighten, and four to five shades darker to contour. This means you will have the right undertone to naturally sculpt the face and the textures will blend together perfectly.
With stick foundations, you often get a smaller volume than you would when buying a formula in a bottle. While this is helpful as it makes it more convenient to carry around with you in your bag, it does also mean you tend to get a bit less product for your money.
The quantity of foundation in a stick is measured in terms of weight, so if you want a foundation that'll last for longer then look for one that weighs more. That being said, how quickly you get through a foundation will also come down to the level of coverage you prefer and whether you wear makeup every day.
To make the most out of your foundation stick use a light layer all over the face and buff in with a brush, this will absorb less product than a sponge making it go further. For on the go touch-ups, keep a foundation stick in your bag in place of a concealer. If you opt for a fuller coverage version you will use less and therefore get more for your money.
Not everyone will feel comfortable using makeup that has been tested on animals - thankfully, for those who want to avoid this kind of product, there are a few options on the market that clearly state "cruelty-free" on the packaging.
Some cruelty-free products still contain animal-derived ingredients though, such as beeswax. Those following a vegan lifestyle should therefore check the specification tables below each product review, where we'll let you know whether a product is vegan, cruelty-free, or both!

Boasting the highest number of shades out of all the brands on our list, Huda Beauty's #FauxFilter foundation is incredibly inclusive. It's lightweight so it won't block pores, but can be built up if you feel like you need more coverage. The formula melts effortlessly into the skin and will stay in place for up to 10 hours.
Furthermore, this product is waterproof and completely sweat-resistant, so it'll hold up in even the most humid weather. It's vegan and cruelty-free too, using synthetic beeswax rather than the real stuff. What more could you ask for from a foundation?
As its name suggests, this waterproof foundation aims to please and it most certainly succeeds! SPF is included to keep your skin safe on sunny days and it contains shea butter and botanical extracts that will really nourish your skin.
We love the fact that this formula is buildable, meaning that you can tailor it to your preference and apply more if needed. It glides on smoothly and feels as light as air on your face. We just wish there were a few more shades available!
This water-based stick is designed to fall somewhere between a tinted moisturiser and a liquid foundation. This means it doesn't offer you full coverage but will help your skin to maintain its natural dewiness, making it especially effective for people who struggle with dry or combination skin.
Thanks to added SPF, your face will be protected from the harsh effects of the sun's rays. Best of all, this foundation is completely cruelty-free and vegan - so you can look good without having a guilty conscience!
MAC's enormous range of shades caters for all kinds of undertones, so you should be able to find one that suits your skin easily. The formulation is soft and feels lovely upon application while being tough enough to last the whole day.
It's a shame that this foundation doesn't have any sun or water protection - if it did, it would definitely be higher on this list! If you're just looking for a simple day-to-day base for work though, this foundation is a wonderful way to go.
This stick of foundation from YSL manages to provide a seriously matte finish without leaving your face looking dehydrated or cakey. Despite being able to offer full coverage for up to 24 hours, it feels light and comfortable to the touch. There's no need to worry about taking a dip in the pool either, as it's waterproof!
The good news for everyone is that there's a wide range of shades, which will make it easier for you to find one that works on your face. And, while it may appear expensive, you get a huge amount of foundation for your money.
This highly-pigmented foundation stick is just what you need for building up coverage to create an even complexion. It stays in place nicely and offers a good level of sun protection, plus it's small enough to be used as a concealer too.
Although L'Oréal Paris says that this product provides a velvety matte makeup base, some reviewers find the finish quite dewy. The formula isn't waterproof either, so it may disintegrate in the heat if you're prone to getting sweaty.
No matter how much of this foundation you apply, it'll still look totally natural - like you woke up with a flawless face! As the stick is small, it allows you to be precise when targeting specific areas that need coverage. It's rich in hydrating ingredients too, which will nourish your skin and prevent it from looking too matte.
While this foundation works well by itself, it's designed to be used in conjunction with other Tom Ford products - this means that it lacks key features like SPF. It's also very expensive compared to the other sticks on our list!
Caking on makeup can lead to blocked pores and breakouts - luckily, this lightweight foundation lets your skin breathe. The semi-matte formula takes away shine but still manages to leave a gentle glow, allowing your natural beauty to show.
The jojoba seed oil in this product helps to hydrate dry skin, but it might be too much for those with skin that's already oily. Since there are only 10 shades, some readers may not be able to find the right tone to match their skin either.
Another long-lasting option, this affordable foundation provides substantial coverage with just a few swipes. Plus, the precision blender that's included will help you to hide blemishes neatly. It can also be used for contouring and highlighting, so it's pretty versatile.
Unfortunately, this foundation lacks SPF or a waterproof formula, which means that it wouldn't be the best holiday companion. It also contains beeswax, so vegans will want to avoid it. Still, it's an inexpensive option with a decent number of shades.
Keep partying into the early hours with this long-lasting foundation from budget brand Barry M; you don't need to worry about leaving the club or a gig with a face of smudged makeup thanks to its incredible staying power. It also contains anti-oxidising fruit extracts and Vitamin E, which will stop your skin from drying out.
While this stick is great for keeping in your handbag on a night out, you sadly don't get much product for your money. It only comes in 5 shades too, so not everyone will be able to enjoy its benefits.
"For dry skin, you can adjust the foundation by mixing in a few drops of oil or illuminator for an extra sheer, glowy finish. I also always keep a high coverage foundation stick in my bag for touch-ups, the creamy formula can be patted in with fingertips making it perfect for on the go. Finally, to keep your foundation stick hygenic, decant the product onto a palette then apply to the skin where possible."
Once you've settled on a stick foundation that works for you, why not pick up a few more bits for your makeup bag?
