Do you struggle to find clothes that both look and feel good? Choosing the right bodysuit is easier than you think if you pay attention to our style tips on style, colour and fit. You'll soon be making heads turn as you become a total fashion glamazon!
As well as standard bodysuits that fit the average-sized person (which is apparently 5"5 to 5"8) some are designed especially for petite women (5"0 to 5"4), and tall women (5"8+). You probably already know your height, but if you're still unsure, it's time to get the tape measure out.
Paying attention to your height when choosing a bodysuit should be your top priority. They're an all-in-one piece and aren't easily adjustable, so it's going to be extremely uncomfortable if it's too long or short for your body – or most likely, the bodysuit just won't fit at all.
Considering your height is definitely important when choosing a bodysuit, you're usually wanting a bodysuit to give smooth, clean lines - otherwise, you'd opt for a top and tuck it in! It's always good to go for a bodysuit with a lot of stretch, if you opt for a spandex bodysuit it will likely fit any height.
Ranging from long to short or sleeveless and strappy, bodysuits nowadays have lots of different sleeve styles. Pay attention to the qualities of each sleeve type so picking one doesn't become a chore. Fashion should be fun, not hard work!
A long-sleeve top will, of course, give you some protection against the elements, but not just from the cold – they can be a defence against sunburn too. The temperatures in the UK don't get too high, so if your bodysuit is light it should protect you without causing overheating. Sweating isn't the latest fashion trend!
As well as keeping you cosy, if you have a skin condition you don't want to broadcast or you like to dress on the conservative side, tops with long sleeves or three-quarter sleeves are a great option for you.
Long-sleeve bodysuits are great for wearing under pleated skirts or satin skirts for the autumn time giving you the illusion of wearing a dress! Long sleeve bodysuits can also be great to wear underneath pretty tank tops or pinafore dresses by adding a pop of colour underneath.
Do you want to let your creativity shine through? With sleeveless styles, you can create a different look each time you wear your bodysuit by layering a long-sleeved top underneath. Try wearing a black top under a white or colourful bodysuit – it'll create a striking effect.
Plus, sleeveless options aren't just for show, as the extra layer will keep you warm on those chilly days. They're great worn as a vest or under-layer when it's cold, then, when it's warmer outside you can wear the bodysuit on its own. Overall, these are a great addition to your wardrobe as they can be utilised all year round!
Sleeveless bodysuits are also really great for wearing underneath jackets and cardigans, if you've got a favourite blazer or leather biker jacket that you want to wear but don't want to be too hot you can wear a sleeveless bodysuit underneath while having your arms bare to keep you cool.
Many people aspire to have a long slender neck, but if you want to fake it, try wearing a top that has straps instead of sleeves. The exposed skin around your neck and shoulders will create the illusion of a longer-looking neck and torso.
Bodysuits with straps also tend to have a bra-style top, which offers you some extra support. You won't need to worry about showing your bra straps because this type of bodysuit is both your top and your bra! These built-in bras do tend to work best for women who have a medium cup size, though, in order for the bodysuit to have a comfortable fit.
Bodysuits with a built-in bra are great for helping to create those smooth lines. Also having the strap can give you that support and lift that you need. Exposing your neck is a subtle way of showing skin and elongating your torso, it's also really nice to wear a necklace on bare skin.
You don't have to worry about excess fabric rubbing against your wrists or it being too tight around your arms when you choose a short-sleeved bodysuit. Plus, they're the perfect substitute if you're a fan of the jeans and tucked-in T-shirt look but you're fed up of having to re-adjust yourself throughout the day!
If it's slightly breezy outside, a short sleeve top is the best choice, as they still offer some protection against the elements, unlike sleeveless tops and straps. The extra coverage is also ideal if you're self-conscious about the tops of your arms and would like to cover them up without wearing full sleeves.
We all love an off-duty model tucked in t-shirt look. But they come untucked, they get all wrinkled and constantly need ironing. The great thing about a short sleeve bodysuit is that because they fit your body like a glove they don't need ironing. They give you a really sleek look when tucked into jeans.
Did you think bodysuits were only for a night of clubbing? Nowadays, they come in all sorts of designs from ones that look like cardigans to workwear-style blouses. Bodysuits have become such a popular wardrobe item, which is no surprise considering their flattering fit.
When will you wear your bodysuit? If you're looking to lounge around, choose a casual one with a comfy jumper or T-shirt feel and wear it with trousers or jeans.
On the other hand, a bodysuit with thick material and a stylish cut will be ideal for channelling your inner girl boss. Then, when it's time to hit the town, pick a jumpsuit with sparkles or a sultry black number paired with leather-look leggings. There really is a bodysuit for every occasion!
Bodysuits are definitely a whole world of their own now, there is a bodysuit for every outfit and every occasion. You can get an underwear style bodysuit which can be great for sucking you in and providing those clean lines. As mentioned above you can get bodysuits that are blouses and jumpers which are great for tucking into trousers and giving you smooth lines around the belt and waist.
Do you dress for style or comfort? Sometimes it's just not possible to have both, which is why this question always comes up amongst fashionistas. Get the lowdown on thongs and briefs below to decide whether you'd rather risk a little comfort or play it safe.
Should the bottom half of a bodysuit be a thong? Most of us are divided on this question, especially as more and more bodysuits have thong bottoms these days, just like their shapewear or underwear counterparts.
It's no secret that this pesky underwear piece can get pretty uncomfortable, but the thing is, a thong bodysuit bottom is tighter and has a better fit. This means that it will smooth out any bumps while hopefully preventing any creases appearing through your jeans or skirt.
So, even if you're not used to wearing a thong, you might have to sacrifice a bit of comfort if you're looking for that seamless figure-hugging look!
Thong bodysuits are worth the comfort sacrifice to give you no visible lines underneath those trousers that hug you tight and fit like a glove. It's not for the faint-hearted, but if you are used to wearing string or thong underwear anyway it will be no different to that for you.
If you really can't suffer through wearing a thong, choosing a bodysuit with a brief bottom is the next best thing. Some bodysuit styles look a bit like a leotard (hands up if you did ballet when you were a kid!), with a lower rise and wider bottom. This one is better for comfort, but you should make sure it fits your thigh area as it can rub if it's too tight.
There's also a bodysuit style that's a blouse attached to a high-rise set of briefs. This bodysuit doesn't copy the bodycon-fit of the thong-style; instead, the top is a stylish loose-fitting blouse. It offers all the comfort for a cool slouchy effect!
Brief style bodysuits are great for those not wanting to brave a thong, but also most blouse/jumper style bodysuits are brief bottoms anyway - these are really great for effortless layered looks. When wearing a flowy satin or pleated skirt if you have a brief style bodysuit on, you won't see any VPL anyway.
Though we're all about experimenting with fashion, you might still like to pick a colour that complements your skin tone. It can often mean the difference between an outfit that looks OK and one that really enhances your features!
The two main skin tone types are warm and cool. You can work out which one of these you are by doing a vein test – if you have a warm tone, your veins will have a green tint, and a cool skin tone will have a blue or purple, tint.
If you have a warm skin tone, you could go for a bodysuit colour with a yellow tint, like yellow-green or orange. If you have a cooler tone, try blues or pinks. Neutrals work with all skin tones, mostly, although white does tend to better on darker skin and black best on paler skin. Good old grey, however, can look good on both.
If you're looking for a flesh colour bodysuit to wear under something that without a bodysuit is too revealing then there are lots of colour shades now in amongst the high street when it comes to picking the right shade for you.
Because a bodysuit is so close to your skin I suggest when choosing colours to go for bold colours, blues and greens if you're fair and avoid pinks as they can wash you out. For darker skin tones, yellows and oranges are great - and reds too!
This inexpensive bodysuit will offer a perfect fit for women of all shapes and sizes, as it has a lot of stretch and will provide a smooth crease-free look. Let's not forget the wider brief bottoms of this bodysuit too, which give a comfy fit compared to some of the thong options. It offers shaping without sacrificing comfort, making it a standout piece.
Grey is a great neutral colour that will match all skin tones and shades, plus you'll easily be able to match it to any of your trousers or denim shades. Able to be worn year-round as a casual piece or jazzed up for a night out, this is a capsule wardrobe piece you need in your closet!
This bodysuit for tall girls looks smart yet glamourous with its sleeveless shape and high slash-neck design. The neck works particularly well for women who are tall, as it can make the upper torso appear shorter whilst still looking elegant.
Although it's a casual bodysuit, you could style this piece to wear for an interview or a day at the office if you wear it with fitted trousers. Not to mention, it's a nice neutral khaki green that could work with all skin tones and shades.
Here's a slouchy ribbed bodysuit for petite women that's ideal for everyday use with its plain design. The 100% cotton T-shirt fabric feels soft and cosy, whilst the deep neckline lets you show off a bit of cleavage or showcase your favourite necklace.
It has shoulder pads and a tight fit that creates the classic bodycon look, hugging your figure and showing off your curves in all the right places. Try wearing this bodysuit with low cut jeans; it's more flattering than wearing them with a bulky T-shirt.
Wearing a cardigan as a top has been a big trend amongst style icons both online and off. With this striking bodysuit made for taller figures, you can embrace this trend without sacrificing the comfort of coverage and support.
The bold blue will inject some colour into your wardrobe and will complement those with cool skin tones beautifully. This a great piece as it can both look causal and smart depending on how you style it – try it out with black jeans for another on-trend look. You can also wear it with skirts, trousers or jogging bottoms as it's such a versatile piece.
This bodysuit has wiring and rib construction so it'll create a structured corset-style effect that's perfect for women with hourglass figures. It's practical, too, and will act as both a top and a bra to keep you safe and secure. Make sure it's a good fit around the cup, though – you should fill it out nicely but not so much it feels uncomfortable.
This bodysuit will look great with both jeans and skirts, but we recommend trying it out under a silver skirt on a night out to really set the design off. Or, try wearing it over a white t-shirt to create a casual look that still has structure.
Do you remember what we said earlier about warm skin tones? That's right, warm colours like orange will compliment your complexion. This zesty long-sleeved bodysuit has a fun off-the-shoulder look and cutout design, which makes it ideal for anyone who likes to express their creativity through fashion.
Made of soft and stretchy lightweight jersey, this bodysuit will make a great addition to your casual or loungewear collection – you can wear it around the house, to do your weekly shop or even on your morning run. It's such a fun everyday piece!
This white body is ultra-sophisticated with its crew neck and sleeveless design. It'll look trendy worn with some skinny jeans but can also look office-ready worn with nude pants. It'll even look good with both low and high-rise bottoms, so it's sure to work with most things in your closet.
Just be aware that the back of this body has a low cut, which will be fine and flattering for casual wear on a sunny day, but if it's colder or you're heading to work you might want to wear it with a blazer.
Do you get cold a lot? This bodysuit will keep you warm with its thermal, heat-gen technology – ideal if you want to stay warm during winter without wearing too many layers. You could even wear this as underwear underneath a jumper on a cold day.
The soft fabric and wider brief bottom make this a comfortable loungewear piece that you could spend hours wearing. The only trouble is that it's a little seasonal, as you're not going to want that thermal technology come summertime.
This shirt-top bodysuit a unique piece that will make sure you stay looking professional in a well-fitted top that doesn't come untucked. You can wear it with some smart trousers in the daytime and jazz it up with jeans or leather trousers when night comes. That's two looks for the price of one!
Although this is a great office wear alternative, the thong bottom has little stretch and might become a bit uncomfortable over the course of the day. It might be OK if you spend most of your day sitting at a desk, but perhaps not for physically demanding retail jobs.
This bodysuit is a super fun sparkly number with high briefs, so it's perfect if you're looking for an alternative to a thong bodysuit. Paired with some high-waisted jeans or leggings, this will make a great alternative to a party dress.
In fact, this top really only works with high waisted bottoms, as the sequins stop at the waist to make way for nude briefs – not ideal if all your jeans are low rise! Nevertheless, it's still a cool bodysuit that will look great on short women with an hourglass figure who love high-rise jeans.
You'll look great wearing your new bodysuit, but you're going to need some jeans or trousers to wear with it. You could even try wearing it underneath some dungarees if you wanted to go for a unique look. Find your outfit now before you forget!
You're ready to spread your wings and fly; there's a whole world of bodysuits out there waiting for you. We hope you've enjoyed reading our style tips and even found your perfect bodysuit. Here's hoping it's going to be one of your new go-to pieces that you won't want to take off!
