How to Choose Dog Crates in the UK

Key Points to Consider
  1. Choose Material Based on Its Intended Purpose and Location
  2. Measure Your Dog First, to Ensure the Correct Size Crate
  3. Opt for a Crate With Multiple Entrances to Give Your Dog Easier Access
  4. Buy a Crate With Included Accessories if You Want an All-In-One Purchase

If You Have an Anxious Pup, Metal Cages Allow Them to See Clearly and Provide Airflow

The first is the classic wire crate. These are structures made of metal wire, making them lightweight, but very sturdy. Furthermore, they allow your dog to see their surroundings, which can be beneficial if you have a particularly anxious pup, as well as providing a plentiful airflow.

These crates are a good choice for carrying your dog in the car. However, they have one rather big downside, they don't offer any privacy, which can be an issue if your dog is easily over-stimulated by various sights and smells.

If You Have a Small Dog, Soft-Sided Crates Allow for Easy Transportation

The next option then is a soft-sided style crate. These are the lightest in weight, making them ideal for transporting your pup. They also tend to have the most entrance options, which is handy if your dog can be a little reluctant to enter.

The main issue with soft-sided crates is that they're aimed at smaller dogs. This makes sense, as carrying a St Bernard in a shoulder bag isn't advised, but it does limit their versatility. Also, if you're planning to use the crate in the house, they can be a little bit of an eyesore.

Wooden or Furniture Crates Are Aesthetically Pleasing and Perfect for Creating a Permanent Space for Your Dog

Finally, you have wooden, or furniture, dog crates. This style is designed to blend in with your home décor. Therefore, they're better for those who aren't planning on moving their crate. As you'd expect, the weight and construction means that these aren't the most portable of the options.

They're more often than not made from wood and come with a solid top, which can be used as a table. Unfortunately, they will require some DIY as they're rarely pre-assembled upon arrival. So you might need to have the tools at the ready!

Measure Your Dog’s Height, Also From Their Nose to Their Tail, Then Add On 10cm to Each Measurement

Measure Your Dog’s Height, Also From Their Nose to Their Tail, Then Add On 10cm to Each Measurement

The first and most important factor is the size of the crate. Your dog should be able to walk in without bending or hunching over, and, once inside, they should be able to turn around comfortably, even if the door is shut. Some dogs are taller when sitting than they are when standing

So it's okay if your dog is unable to sit comfortably in the crate, just so long as they have plenty of space when standing. Typically, they say that to get the correct size, you should measure your dog's height, from the top of their head to the floor, and the length, tip of their nose to the base of their tail. From there, add 10 cm to each measurement, providing adequate space.

Next, measure your dog's height from the ground to the top of the head, including the ears, when standing up. This will be the approximate height of the crate you need. Finally, measure the width of your dog to get the appropriate width of the crate, adding 5 to 10 centimetres depending on the size of the breed.

The dog's weight is also one of the other most important factors when choosing a cage. Cages for large breed dogs are made of stronger materials, so they tend to last longer than cages for small breed dogs. Also, keep in mind their future growth; buy a cage with the ideal size.

Crates With Two or Three Entrances Make It Easier for Your Pup to Come and Go

Crates With Two or Three Entrances Make It Easier for Your Pup to Come and Go

This feature isn’t necessarily essential, but something that we imagine your dog would greatly appreciate. You might want to consider buying a crate with multiple different entrances. This way, when you’re home, you can open up both sides, so the dog can come and go as it pleases.

Multiple entrances are usually found on the sides in wire crates, and on the sides or top of soft-sided crates. But regardless of which one you pick, you can more often than not get a crate with at least two, if not three, entrances. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the wooden crates, this style typically only has one entrance.

Keep an Eye Out for Any Useful Accessories Such as Soft Mats or Shoulder Straps That Will Make Your Life Easier and Save You Money

Keep an Eye Out for Any Useful Accessories Such as Soft Mats or Shoulder Straps That Will Make Your Life Easier and Save You Money

The final thing you'll want to check is if your purchase comes with any additional goodies! Soft sided crates tend to come with the widest range of extra features as they’re designed for transport, but with any crate purchase, keep an eye out for these:

  • Removable trays in wired and wooden crates - useful for easy cleaning
  • Fleece bed mats - provide extra comfort for your dog
  • Bowls - help food-motivated dogs create positive associations with crates
  • Food bags - help keep your pet care items organised
  • Shoulder straps - Great for travelling with your dog

If your favourite crate is lacking on extras, kit it out with our Best Dog Water Bottles!

A Classic and Affordable Metal Crate With Two Entrances and a Removable Tray

When it comes to finding the right crate, sometimes you just can't beat the classics. That's why we've opted for this simple and straightforward metal dog crate. With multiple sizes available, you're sure to find the perfect one for your pooch.

There are two entrances on the sides of the crate, which allow it to open up and give your dog freedom, as well as making it a little more versatile depending on where you'd like to put it. There's also a removable tray for when it comes to cleaning. It might not be the most luxurious option, but it's affordable and does exactly what it says on the tin.

A Stylish Wooden Option Featuring Two Doors, Chew-Proof Bars and a Cosy Padded Mat

This crate has a few features that your dog will surely appreciate, which in our eyes makes it one of the best wooden options. This crate has two custom direction doors, which when opened, give your four-legged pal plenty of space to get in and out.

The design also incorporates chew proof bars and a sturdy lock that's easy to use, which will give you that little more peace of mind when you have to pop to the shops. On top of that, it comes with a cosy padded mat, providing the perfect place for your fuzzball to relax.

Soft-Sided, Luxurious Crate With a Dual-Sided Mat and a Sturdy, Steel Frame, Perfect for Transportation

If you want a soft-sided crate that provides ultimate indulgence, you'll be hard-pressed to find anything more luxurious than this offering from Mool. It has a dual-sided mat with a fleece lining on one side for the cooler months, and polyester on the other for when the sun does decide to put his hat on. It also comes in different sizes and colours!

Furthermore, it has a steel frame throughout for a sturdier build, and to provide that little more security. It also benefits from plenty of ventilation so your dog can remain calm no matter how long you're on the road. Plus, it comes with a nifty food bag!

A Bold and Bright Pink Crate With a Fleece Bed and Removable Tray

Here we have another classic wire crate with a twist. This time it comes in candyfloss pink, and while it might be a little garish for some, we imagine that there are owners or dogs out there whose personality this would very much compliment!

The crate also comes with a fleece dog bed, which is a big advantage for both home use and transportation. There's also a removable tray underneath, so you could even alternate between the bedding in the evening and tray in the day.

A Contemporary Furniture Crate to Fit Perfectly With Modern Home Decor

When it comes to furniture crates, the design is almost as important as the functionality. After all, you're buying this to co-ordinate with your room. Hence why this offering from BingoPaw made our cut, as the contemporary design and colour will fit flawlessly within many modern homes

Moreover, this crate can hold up to 80kg of weight, making it a great side table so you can double up opt style and functionality. It's a sturdy piece of kit, so you won't have to worry about your dog's safety, or the longevity of the crate.

A Soft-Sided, Collapsible Crate Featuring Two Doors and Breathable Mesh Panels

Amazon has their fingers in many different pies when it comes to their basics range, but what surprises us, is the impressive consistency of their execution. Take this soft-sided crate, for example. It has two doors, top and front, as well as mesh panels that allow for decent airflow and provide a little viewing platform for your dog.

Additionally, the PVC frame and fabric outer can be set up or stored away in seconds, making it ideal for any compact storage situation. Sadly, it doesn't come with a mat, so you'll likely have to purchase one of those yourself. But that aside, it hits all the right notes.

A Budget-Friendly Wire Crate That Will Add a Splash of Colour to Any Room

This offering sparked our attention for two reasons. Firstly, it comes in blue and pink, which is a nice change for the classic black or silver options out there. Particularly if you have a little one who would like the dog to stay in their room at night. Secondly, it's one of the most budget-friendly options on our list!

We do have some questions over the size as the dimensions are rather peculiar, which might make for a bit of an interesting fit. But other than that, this a decent wire crate, for a decent price.

A Tiny Machine Washable Dog Carrier Complete With Bowl, Fluffy Mat and Shoulder Strap

Okay, this is possibly the most un-crate-like crate there ever was. But if you're after a carrier built for the tiniest dogs, it certainly makes our cut. The main highlight is the sheer amount of additional features that accompany this portable home, with a bowl, fluffy mat and easy-to-carry strap.

We also love about that it's completely machine washable, including the mat, so you don't have to worry about it picking up that soggy dog smell. The downside is that it will kind of feel like you've got an open bag knocking about in your house if you plan on using it day-to-day, which isn't very feng shui.

A Large Crate With Two Compartments, Perfectly Sized to Fit In the Boot of Your Car

This crate is perfect for those with two pooches. It's a relatively large cage that will fit most medium and some larger dogs. The crate itself is designed to fit the boot of your car, making it ideal for those who like to take the mutts on a big old trek over the weekends.

Both sides fold completely flat, which is pretty nifty as you can collapse it down when not in use. Admittedly, it's a little basic and might not be great for using at home. But for transportation or overnight accommodation when on holiday, it should work just fine.
