How to Choose a Dog Wormer in the UK

Key Points to Consider
  1. Pick a Treatment to Guard Against Multiple Types of Parasitic Worm
  2. Age and Weight Affect Dosage, Choose a Suitable Treatment for Your Dog
  3. For Fussy Dogs, Try a Liquid, Paste or Granule Wormer
  4. Guidelines Vary: Check the Duration and Frequency of the Treatment
  5. Vomiting and Diarrhoea Can Occur After Worming - Look Out for Common Side Effects
1

Make Sure the Treatment Guards Against Lungworm, Roundworm, Tapeworm, Hookworm and Whipworm, as Required

Make Sure the Treatment Guards Against Lungworm, Roundworm, Tapeworm, Hookworm and Whipworm, as Required

Choose a Roundworm Treatment for Puppies

Roundworm is a fairly common occurrence in puppies as the parasites can be passed on through their mother's feeding. Common symptoms of roundworm in puppies include a pot belly, poor growth and diarrhoea, but in severe cases, they can also cause blockages in the intestines.

However, adults can also contract roundworm by picking it up from walks outside and eating infected poo. Infected adult dogs might also experience diarrhoea, vomiting, and a less-than-healthy coat. Another way to detect roundworm is to check their poo – the worms are often visible on semi-close inspection!

Opt For a Flea Control Treatment to Prevent Tapeworms

Tapeworms aren't as common as roundworm, but they can easily be transmitted through fleas. This is why, as well as keeping on top of worming schedules, it's important to administer flea control to keep this type of worm at bay.

Once infected, tapeworms live in the small intestine and look like tiny grains of rice. A common symptom of a tapeworm infestation is excessive licking around the bum area. They can also be seen in the poo and gripping onto hair around the tail region.

Hookworm and Whipworm Are Less Common, but Can Be Fatal if Not Treated

Hookworms are more common in Europe than they are in the UK, but they are still something to be aware of. These nasty little things suck blood and nutrients  move around the inside of the dog's body, lungs and intestines. They can be fatal to puppies and require immediate veterinary attention.

Whipworms, meanwhile, don't ingest as many nutrients, but they burrow deep into internal tissue in the intestines. Again, they aren't that common in the UK. Infections don't usually cause any symptoms, making it hard to tell if your dog has been infected.

Check With Your Vet to See if Your Dog Needs Protecting Against Lungworm

Lungworm is a parasite that is carried by snails and slugs. They can be transmitted if a dog eats a contaminated slug or snail or even eats or licks some grass containing their snail trails.

If a dog becomes infected, it can recover with the proper treatment, but this tends to be much more serious than other types of worm infections. As lungworm is more prevalent in certain regions of the UK, check with your vet to see if you need to take preventative measures.

2

Most Recommend One Worming Tablet per 10kg: Pick a Suitable Treatment for Your Dog’s Age and Weight

Most Recommend One Worming Tablet per 10kg: Pick a Suitable Treatment for Your Dog’s Age and Weight

All dogs require different worming treatment dependent on their age and weight. Puppies, for example, begin treatment at three weeks old and are wormed every two weeks until they are 16 weeks old.

After that, you will need to check with the vet for how often they need to be wormed, but it's usually every 1-3 months. Older dogs usually only need to be wormed, every three months, unless they are particularly active or working dogs, or if they are in kennels (with lots of other dogs coming and going).

The main concern when it comes to determining the correct dosage is your dog's weight. Get this wrong, and you could end up under-medicating or, even worse, overdosing your poor dog. The general rule of thumb is 1 tablet or dose per 10 kg of weight – but check with both the vet and the packaging of the product to confirm this, as it could be different.

3

Worming Tablets Are an Effective Treatment, While Liquid, Paste or Granule Wormers May Be Better for Fussy Dogs

Worming Tablets Are an Effective Treatment, While Liquid, Paste or Granule Wormers May Be Better for Fussy Dogs

You might own one of those hoover-dogs who gobble up anything that you pretend is a treat, but some pets take a little more persuading when it comes to taking medication.

Liquid treatments are excellent, as they allow you to sprinkle a few drops directly onto your dog's food or treat using the included pipette. This eliminates any worries that they haven't swallowed it, and the dog usually won't be able to tell the difference. Granules work in a similar way. Pastes can be smeared onto a paw to be licked off, or syringed straight into your pet's mouth. These forms of medication all tend to be a little more expensive.

On the other hand, you have tablets and pills. While more affordable, these can often be harder to get your dog on board with and some dogs insist on spitting them out. If you do get your pet to swallow, at least you know they have taken the exact dose and half of it isn't smeared around their food bowl! You could try looking for tablets that are cleverly coated in an attractive flavouring

4

Check the Duration and Frequency of the Treatment

Check the Duration and Frequency of the Treatment

There are two ways to go about worming – preventative and reactive – but, as we know, defence is always the best offence. That said, when your dog does catch worms, you will need to act straight away.

Chemical treatments work to kill the parasite as well as prevent any further infection, so these can often be used as both a reactive and preventative measure. The treatment is generally quite a strong dosage, usually taken once or for a very short period until the worms have cleared up.

Natural remedies tend to be used as just a preventative measure. These usually need to be taken throughout the entire year for a couple of days a month. Natural formulas generally contain a mix of herbs and are a much more subtle way to administer treatment by repelling fleas and ticks, so they aren't a quick-fix solution.

5

Look for Common Side Effects Like Vomiting and Diarrhoea

Look for Common Side Effects Like Vomiting and Diarrhoea

This last point is especially important if your dog has a naturally sensitive stomach or is prone to allergies. It is pretty standard for a dog to suffer some mild, short-lived side effects from deworming medication such as a lack of appetite, stomach upset or vomiting, but if these persist, make sure to book them in with the vet sooner rather than later.

A Meaty-Flavoured Wormer Suitable for Large Dogs

WORMclear tablets by Beaphar are an affordable option that offers your dog quick relief from worms, mostly in as little as one dose. These are an excellent option if your dog doesn't usually like taking tablets as they have a slightly meaty coating.

WORMclear is suitable for large dogs, nursing dogs two weeks after they have given birth and small dogs – as long as they weigh between 3-40 kg. However, these tablets do often cause serious vomiting and diarrhoea. If your dog has had similar reactions to any previous medication, they're best avoided.

One-Dose Wormer for Quick Relief From All Worms

The One Dose Wormer from Johnsons is a great quick fix for small to medium dogs between 6-20 kg. With just one tablet per treatment, the wormer kills and removes all kinds of worms swiftly and effectively, which helps eliminate any spreading of infection to surfaces, other dogs and people.

Anti-Roundworm Syrup for Puppies Aged 2 Weeks+

From the authorised veterinary brand Beaphar is a syrup for puppies. Unlike most flavoured wormers which usually taste like meat, this one is a chocolate-flavoured syrup that young dogs will actually enjoy as a tasty treat!

It's easy to use by applying directly into the puppy's mouth or mixing it in a little of their food. It's suitable for both puppies and kittens from 2 weeks of age and especially suits those who aren't keen on taking tablets, although the formula does only support the treatment of roundworms.

Single Dose Worming Tablets in the Form of Meat-Flavoured Biscuits

Drontal is a dog wormer brand commonly promoted by vets. These tablets are sneakily disguised as bone biscuits with added beef flavouring, making them more appealing to your pet. They are effective against tapeworm, roundworm, hookworm and whipworm.

This product is a single-dose treatment and is recommended to be taken every three months. That said, it has been suggested to take a second dose after 14 days if the dog has had an extensive infestation. The dosage should be one tablet per 10 kg of body weight but should not be used by dogs over 30 kg. The recommended dose rates are 1 tablet per 10kg bodyweight.

Treatment for Tapeworm and Roundworm

For pets which won't take a tablet, worming granules may be your answer! Just sprinkle them into their food and let the active ingredient of Fenbendazole get to work - reviewers have had great success with these granules.

The formula has been regarded as safe to use by vets and effectively protects against tapeworms, roundworms, hookworms and lungworms. However, it's worth noting that they don't seem to target ringworm.

Easy-To-Split Tablets That Protect Against the Four Main Types of Worm

The Ridaworm dog wormers are designed to kill all four main types of worms that pose a risk in the UK. The tablets are flavoured, making them tastier to dogs and more likely to be accepted when disguised as a treat instead of medication.

As dosage is determined according to weight, it's convenient that these tablets are easy to split, in case you need half or one and a half for the weight of your dog. They contain the usual active ingredients of Praziquantel, Pyrantel and Febantel and can be taken as both routine treatments and after an infestation.

Pork-Flavoured Worming Tablets

These tablets are effective against all four major types of worms in the UK and can be used for adult dogs and puppies older than six weeks. As for weight restrictions, they are suitable for any weight between 5-35 kg. For dogs over 35 kg there is the Prazitel Plus XL option.

Being pork-flavoured, the tablets are very tempting to dogs and can be administered in just one dose, so they are great for a quick fix. This brand also offers a bulk-buy option with a pack of 24 tablets, but as always it's best to test out a new-to-your-dog product with just a small pack (like this) first. Reviewers report no side-effects and good results.

What Are Dog Wormers and How Often Should You Use Them?

What Are Dog Wormers and How Often Should You Use Them?

Worms are parasites that infect dogs, cats and other animals that like to explore the outdoors. Wormers are used to either treat a dog already infected or to prevent infections from occurring. Infection usually occurs when dogs play with or eat, contaminated soil or faeces, but they can also be passed through to puppies during feeding and contracted by fleas.

Common symptoms of a worm infestation include; an upset stomach, slow movements, scooting on their bums, excessive tiredness and a reduced appetite or sometimes an excessive appetite. If left untreated, worms can cause severe long-term damage to vital organs, so if you think your dog is showcasing any of these signs, take them to the vet immediately to seek proper medical attention.

That said, most dogs will have worms at some point in their life, which is why it's really important to safeguard them against these nasty little pests with a regular treatment. Puppies need to be wormed every couple of weeks and dogs every few months; again, speak to your vet to determine the correct frequency for your dog's age and lifestyle.

Internal deworming of dogs is recommended at least every 3 months, one for each season of the year. In the case of external deworming of dogs, it will depend on the duration of the product and the brand you choose. It can be every month or every four months, even every eight months!

Frequently Asked Questions

How Often Do Dogs Need to Be Wormed?

You should consult with your vet to ensure that the correct dose is given in the most appropriate timeframe. Once they pass six months they’ll need worming every 3 months. However, up until 3 months, you’ll likely need to worm them every couple of weeks, then monthly until they turn six months old.

Can Dog Wormers Be Used on Cats?

Dog wormers shouldn’t be used on cats and nor should cat wormers be used on dogs. This is because they both target different types of worms; in addition, there may be ingredients that are used that can be toxic to other pets and quantities that may be too much.

How Quickly Do Dog Wormers Take Effect?

Treatments tend to work quite quickly; if they’ve been exhibiting symptoms, they should return to their normal behaviour within several hours. There is a chance with oral treatments that they may vomit afterwards, so be sure to keep an eye on them for the next few hours and contact your vet if anything seems amiss.
