We all know that hydration is one of the fundamental aspects of staying healthy, and doubtless each time you go out you remember to take a water bottle with you. If you have a canine companion, you should definitely check out a portable water bottle for dogs to ensure their thirst is quenched when walking or travelling, too!
Although dogs aren't fussy about their water sources and surely wouldn't mind lapping up some H2O from a stream when you're on a hike, having clean water on hand ensures they have a safe and easy way to hydrate. With choices from Amazon, and Argos, we'll take you through the best water bottles you can buy for your pooch in the UK.

Unless your dog has issues with drinking water, you can more or less depend upon them to know when they are thirsty and how much they need to drink – there is seldom need for you to monitor this too closely! However, when choosing your bottle, you should ensure that you can provide your pooch with a drink when they want it.
A good rule of thumb is to allow for 25-50 ml of water per kilogram of your dog's weight, every 24 hours. However, if you are going for a strenuous hike, we definitely advise estimating for more than the average, as your dog will be drinking water to cool down and replenish their energy.
For bigger dogs, or longer outings, we recommend larger bottles of around 500 ml, even though they will be slightly bulkier and heavier to carry.
You will find that many dog water bottles are made of plastic, which is a great material because it is so lightweight and convenient to carry on walks of any duration. Plastic dog water bottles will also generally be quite cheap.
However, we recommend ensuring that a plastic water bottle is BPA-free, meaning that it is made without bisphenol A. Although BPA has long been a common substance in reusable plastics, it has been scientifically proven to have health implications specifically for humans, because it can leach from the container into the water itself.

If you prefer to avoid plastic altogether, why not go with stainless steel? As well as being able to conserve the temperature of your water for longer than plastic, stainless steel is an incredibly durable material, extending the lifetime of your dog water bottle.
Although they may be a little heavier than their plastic counterparts, steel bottles will be able to withstand a lot more, and you won't have to worry as much about them degrading, picking up odours or stains over time.
Of course, your pup won't be able to drink from a bottle the way you do! Dog water bottles will always have a cup or trough mechanism to let your dog drink. We recommend looking at the width of these cups, because dogs will need to get their snouts fairly close to the trough to drink.
Narrow models can be fine for some breeds, but for wider tongues, or flat-snouted dogs, ensure that you get a wider cup, to prevent your dog from being uncomfortable while drinking.
Although by no means a necessity, we advise keeping an eye out for a water bottle with a strap to easily transport your dog's water bottle during outdoor activities. This allows you to hang the bottle from your wrist or neck when not in use, leaving your hands free – useful if you need them to grip onto your dog's lead!
Some water bottles may not come directly with a strap, but they may have a hook or clip instead, which you can use to thread a strap of your preferred length through.
Pour bottles are probably the more popular option available for dog water bottles, because they are straightforward and ensure that you can fill up the drinking trough quickly. You will find two main formats of pour bottles: bottles with a drinking cup that needs to be detached, or bottles with a drinking cup attached.
However, a great alternative if you want to keep one hand free, is a bottle with a 'locking' mechanism, that is operated by a push button or switch. These will normally have the drinking part attached, with no need for any manoeuvring to begin hydrating your dog.
You will simply need to push on a button for the tray to fill up. A great option for convenience, we would note that these mechanisms can take some getting used to at first, and may be trickier if you don't have a lot of wrist strength.

This Vivaglory model is the largest capacity on our list, which combined with its material (food-grade stainless steel for the body of the bottle and BPA-free plastic for the lid) makes it a little bit heavier than some of our other choices. However, we think this is a great investment to make for your dog.
Not only is it durable thanks to its materials, the cup (which includes a sealing gasket to protect from leaks) is both wide and deep to ensure that any dog can drink comfortably from it. Moreover, it is easy to carry, and comes in a range of vibrant colours. Dogs may be colour blind, but that extra option of personalisation for humans is a winning touch from us!
This integrated drinking tray and bottle requires you to simply flip the leaf design inside out to pour your pup a drink! Once you're done, you can flip it back and it will mould perfectly to the shape of the bottle.
The bottle is pretty lightweight despite its large capacity, and includes the ever-handy carabiner clip to buckle onto your bag or belt. An interesting feature of this is that you can remove the cap and leaf, and attach them to any other bottle with a 30/38 mm neck, for flexibility in how much water you take out for your dog.
This model has a one touch open and close mechanism to allow your dog to conveniently drink water. Made with high quality BPA-free plastic, it is both lightweight and durable. The drinking cup is wide which makes it ideal for most dog breeds including flat-snouted dogs.
It's available in several colourful designs and has a handy wrist strap too. Plus, it can help you conserve water, as once your dog's thirst is quenched, the button mechanism allows for any leftovers to pour back into the bottle – great for walks without access to water top-ups.
This dog water bottle uses a different mechanism from the others on our list: it squeezes to fill up. However, it is essentially very similar to a push-button mechanism, as you simply 'unlock' the bottle at the top and squeeze to fill the drinking cup.
This is our best size-to-capacity ratio pick, because the cup actually folds down over the bottle itself, so when not in use you can store it easily. It also comes in a larger size of 600 ml and 2 other colour options!
The PHILORN water bottle holds a reasonable 420 ml of water making it just the right capacity for longer walks. Operated by a push button, you can use it one-handed, and when your dog is done drinking, you can hold down the button to let any excess water flow back into the bottle.
It is 100% leakproof, made of food-grade BPA-free plastic and has a sizeable drinking trough which doubles as a temporary food bowl. It also features a strap, so that you can hang it off your wrist when not in use.
This relatively simple design is straightforward and a solid choice for a larger capacity dog water bottle. It has a wide drinking trough that can be filled by pouring from the main bottle, which is completely leakproof when screwed on.
It also includes a carabiner clip to attach it to a belt or backpack. Being made of high-quality stainless steel makes it a safe and very durable choice, but we would also note that it is the heaviest of the bottles in our top 10.
This mid-sized water bottle employs a safety lock to protect against leaks, so you can comfortably carry it in your bag without worry. Plus, its push-button mechanism and slim design means you can operate it with one hand.
This interesting model also has the option to use a filter – your first bottle will come with a water purification carbon filter that slots into the bottle easily, and can be used up to 100 times before replacing. A nice option to have, and you can also use the bottle without the filter, too. However, we would like to point out that this is the most expensive water bottle on our list.
Keep your dog hydrated on the go with this 2 in 1 water bottle from Wild & Woofy. Best suited to smaller breeds, with its smaller, narrower drinking cup that's perfect for little snouts. So it may not be the best for larger breeds!
The body is made of stainless steel, so there will be no concerns about transporting it in your bag. The bottle also comes with an attached carabiner clip, so you can clip it onto the outside of your bag if you prefer.
This multifunctional dog water bottle not only holds 260ml of water but also 200ml of food as well as having an extra space for waste bags. There is even a hidden shovel attached on the back which can be used to clean up waste.
In addition to all these great features, this bottle comes with a hanging rope which makes it easy to carry. It is lightweight and made with durable materials making it perfect for those long dog walks.
This model is the cheapest on our list, but it definitely serves its purpose. It is easy to use, and relatively compact as the bottle fits exactly into the drinking trough when not in use. It also features a clip so that you can attach it to your bag when you're out and about.
However, it can be a bit flimsier than other models due to its material, and therefore may not be quite so durable in the long term. As well, the drinking cup is quite narrow, so may not be ideal for wider snouts.
