It was always going to be difficult to choose a number one for such a diverse product – until we saw this pair, that is. They're not the best looking, but they're not as garish as some others either. Regardless, the boots use a classic leather construction, and they have a complete line up of protection points with multiple reliable closures. 

They come in three colours to suit any style, or even pair up to the colour of your bike! This pair is bound to please almost anyone and they're totally affordable too, which is why they get the nod for the top spot. 

While they'd look just as good worn to the pub as on a bike, we imagine that after seeing all the other options in the ranking these might appear a bit too basic. However, don't let that fool you. Yes, they might be a little more old-school in terms of design, but don't forget those designs worked for years before we started getting all fancy. 

These Alpinestars boots are made from traditional leather, but there are also shedloads of impressive features hidden under there – gusseted tongues, reinforced heel and toe boxes, dual-density ankle disc protection, breathable mesh inner liners and oil-resistant soles, to name but a few. 

These racing boots from Sidi might look like something a character would wear in a Sci-Fi thriller, but that's because they could probably protect your lower legs from laser blasts as well as the tarmac. The first thing to point out is just how easy it is to get in and out thanks to the magnetic straps, a real plus when you've still got your gloves on. 

The boots are crafted from a tonne of different pieces that you can pull out and stick back together, like the asymmetric shock-absorbing heel cup or the carbon fibre support braces. These features might be a little excessive for most, but if you like to hit the track or just generally take your riding seriously, we're sure you'll be pleased with them. 

Designed, developed and engineered all by O'Neal's boot specialists in the Montebelluna area of Italy, these market-leading adventure boots are ideal for those who want something comfortable for long trips. They combine a lightweight microfibre upper with reinforced, padded and armoured parts, which allows for flexibility, comfort and maximum safety. 

In addition to that, there's an ergonomic and removable 3-D footbed, a burn guard for extra protection against exhausts and a closure system with both buckles and straps. They're big and clunky, but they're going to keep you safe, and sometimes that's all that matters. 

Motorcycle accessory company Sidi has teamed up with the highly esteemed Gore-Tex to create this technically-brilliant boot. The Gore-Tex liner ensures the rider stays dry, but other features such as a reflective insert on the back and the classic armour protection give these a lot of reliability too. 

As well as the fact they come in smaller sizes for women's feet, one interesting factor is that the boots are produced using synthetic leather as opposed to genuine. This makes it more accessible and probably aids the weatherproofing. However, it does mean that they're not as abrasion-resistant. 

There's a lot to be said about these sleek, comfortable and mobility-enhanced racing boots, but the first thing is that they are available in almost every size you could want, which means that most people will be able to enjoy them. On top of that, they're an absolute bargain racer-style boot.

When it comes to physical features, the boots are crafted from real cow leather and have additional armour in the ankle. This might not be as protective as some others, but considering the price, we were surprised they have any armour!

This line of boots are for those who like the braking/shifting movement of riding in trainers, but sensibly, want to have a little more protection. We think they look something like a cross between a basketball or boxing shoes, which will give you a nice casual look when you pull up to where you're arriving. 

Safety-wise, there are lateral ankle inserts that should protect against abrasion as well as toe and heel implants. The issue is that although they're made from microfibre, they're not waterproof, which is a big shame considering that is one of the reasons many people prefer that material. 

These budget-friendly, CE-certified boots have an ergonomic shape, which is said to provide the rider with greater control on the bike. Alongside this, they're also weatherproof thanks to their waterproof membrane, and adjustable due to the inclusion of both Velcro and zip closures. 

It's worth mentioning that it is uncommon to find racing boots this short in height. This is because they offer less protection, which might be acceptable if you're only casually riding around the streets, but not if you're planning on being a little braver. For that reason, these might be better for those who want to walk the walk without talking the talk, if you know what we mean. 

The Corozal from Alpinestars is a touring boot that is bursting with safety features. They have an advanced polymer shin plate, lateral ankle protection and an internal toe box for protection and better grip. Plus, there's an integrated breathable membrane that helps keep things cool.

The soles have been known to be a little too sturdy in some instances, which can mean a less receptive touch – something a few riders aren't too fond of. That said, they should wear in over time and become a bit more sensitive.  

Getting us underway is this low-key pair of mid-length boots from Spada Pilgrim, a renowned and respected motorcycle accessory brand. They're made from full-grain leather with a full-length waterproof lining as well as plenty of closure options to keep them secure. 

They also have a welt rubber sole that should stop you slipping on the streets if you encounter a spill, which is particularly handy. There is an issue though – while they have a TPU internal ankle support and reinforces toes and heels, this pair of boots doesn't have much additional armour, which could see you under-protected should there be an accident.
