Choosing the right shacket is all about finding one that's the both cosy and lightweight, making it an easy and adaptable piece. In this section we'll take a look at the different materials, cuts and lengths you'll come across to guide you in your choice.
The material you choose for your shacket will determine the "look" you create, and how it fits your body. There are other concerns such as how natural the material is, and how soft and comfortable it feels. Here we will look at material options in a bit more detail.
Leather has a way of polishing up every outfit to make it seem that little bit more intentional (in a good way). Whether it is worn open like a jacket or as a super-stylish button-up, not only will a leather shacket turn heads but it'll keep you really warm, too.
You'll be surprised by just how much of your wardrobe a leather shacket will go with, so, though a higher priced material, it may well be worth it. Wipe-clean and extremely durable, a good leather item may even last you forever!
Sheepskin or shearling is a gorgeous idea at this time of year, but it seems to have been taken over by its more ethical and accessible cousin, borg. Borg isn't just an alien species in Star Trek – it also happens to be one of the best autumn to winter fabrics to cover yourself in.
A very thick and soft material with a faux sheepskin look, borg is super warm due to its heat retaining properties. Made from 100% polyester, it's another tough-wearing and highly-durable choice, which makes it a perfect casual go-to in the colder months.
If there's one material you can't go wrong with, it has to be denim. With the ability to be dressed up or dressed down depending on the cut and how you wear it, denim is a true autumn staple.
Made from cotton, denim is a natural material that is hypoallergenic and great for your skin. Its material means it can be structured and stiff, or totally relaxed. Whether worn as a jacket when it's milder or layered as a shirt in winter, there's a lot you can do with denim.
Corduroy is one of those magical materials that can look preppy, casual or formal depending on how you wear it, and that makes for a great purchase. Embrace the cosiness by opting for one of the muted or neutral hues like sage or oatmeal for a classic autumnal look.
The term corduroy doesn't actually refer to the material but to the certain recognisable structure of the fabric. Corduroy can actually be made from natural or synthetic fibres and is most often made from a mix of polyester, nylon or cotton.
Cut and length can determine whether your shacket will look spruced up or more casual, so it's worth considering before buying. For a comfy everyday look, you might choose an oversized pocketed shacket with a relaxed or loose fit, skimming the hip area.
If you want something a little more formal or jacket-like, go for a regular fit which creates a more tailored feel. A longline shacket, particularly with a tie belt around the waist, is not only sophisticated-looking but will keep you warm, too!
Khaki or checked shackets are some of the most popular choices, but there's a vast array of options to create your own unique style. We're big fans of the muted hues in vogue at the moment, particularly browns, greys and greens, but black is a sure-fire winner for most occasions.
Houndstooth or an extra-large check gives less of a lumberjack vibe and more of a city-chic aesthetic, so why not consider these if you're looking to dress to impress!
You'd be forgiven for assuming that all shackets are machine washable like their shirt counterparts, but we're afraid that's not always the case. Many of the options made from polyester need to be dry-cleaned, which is important to know before buying.
Dry cleaning can be an extra faff for sure, however, most shackets you'll come across don't actually need to be cleaned too often. Obviously, it depends how often you wear it and what you do whilst wearing it, but many materials can go a good, long old time before they need to be dry-cleaned.

One of the signature shacket styles is the check print, which is why our number one this time has to be this unique take on the classic by Danish brand Only. With a luxurious yet practical feel, this adorable pocketed longline shacket is super adaptable either dressed up or down!
Made from 95% polyester and 5% wool, the brushed woven fabric feels delightfully soft and the longer cut ensures warmth. And when could be a better time to embrace Scandi style than in the colder months?
Not for the faint-hearted, the Anorak Shacket by Lab Leather has to be the style icon of our list. The high-buttoned mod-ish collar, press-stud buttons and leather tie waist stand out from the crowd and make it a highly collectable piece.
Lab are a London-based brand of design experts, and the result is a durable, high-quality item that will last forever. It is the most expensive piece amongst our recommendations but is worth investing in it if you have the budget. It doesn't get much chicer than this!
We love a check print shacket and especially a more unusual take on it like this houndstooth overshirt by Pimkie. The large marbled buttons, bold cut and structured material give this shacket a cool mod-ish quality.
Pimkie is a French high street label with empowering everyday fashion at affordable prices, making this one of the best value on our list. Made with a sturdy wool-mix woven fabric, expect to get lots of wear out of this shacket and it can actually be machine washed too (yay)!
Our favourite offering for the taller amongst us, this shacket has it all: soft stretch corduroy, a relaxed fit and a khaki palette! Vero Moda really pride themselves on being affordable but with a high-fashion aesthetic, and this cord shacket is no different.
Olive green utilitarian outerwear acts as a neutral and this one somehow goes with everything from rollnecks and jeans to linen dresses, making it a real must-have. Not to forget its ribbed, velvety texture. Surely the khaki shacket has to be the original too, right?
Some shackets really ride the line between being a shacket and a coat, but when it comes to the Petite Borg Collared Shacket, we're so glad they did. Featuring a regular shirt fit coupled with a quilted lining and a snug borg collar trim, it's the best of both worlds.
With some great detailing like large, low pockets and gathered cuffs this shacket is casual but sharp-looking. Both easy to fold away into a bag and wonderfully warm, you're sure to get lots of wear out of this one! ASOS DESIGN represents all body shapes and this one is within the petite range.
As far from looking like a lumberjack as you can get, autumn's check shackets have more of a boho cowgirl vibe. A big, bold gingham check is very in this season and can be seen everywhere from low to high-end fashion. This smart interpretation by & Other Stories is a great example of it, in cool and classic black and white.
Mainly made from wool with a mix of other fabrics, this shacket is delightfully soft and warm. We love the feminine silhouette created by the tie belt, and the slightly longer cut is uber flattering as well as cosy.
Are you looking for something a bit more unisex and comfortable? If so, look no further than this Oversized Denim Shacket by COLLUSION. Made from 100% soft and breathable lightweight cotton, it's designed to last for a long time.
Created by designers with a focus on inclusivity, it's also part of ASOS's responsible edit, both of which we love to see! The plain design, roomy fit and in slightly faded brown gives us major 90's vibes which is never a bad thing either.
Sage is a big colour this season, and we're absolutely here for it –especially when it comes in the shape of ASOS Curve's Bonded Borg Shacket. With its pocketed, panelled design and thick, bonded borg material, it'll keep you warm while totally making a style statement.
Unfortunately, once again this option is dry clean only as it's made totally from polyester, which isn't the most convenient. However, its thickness makes it lean a little more to the jacket side than the shirt side, so hopefully it won't need dry-cleaning too often.
Fancy something girly but with its fair share of attitude? Then ASOS Design's Brushed Longline Shacket is worth a look with its candyfloss pink shade, cloud-soft material and longer length.
Its dropped shoulders, chunky spread collar and press stud placket make it perfect for laidback weekend lunches and day-to-day wear alike. As it's made from 100% polyester, its soft woven fabric does need to be dry cleaned rather than washed at home, though.
If you're on a bit of a budget and looking for something light for those sunny autumnal days, consider this cropped utility shacket. Made from 100% cotton, its styling feels similar to a denim jacket but with a slightly more clean-cut look.
Made by New Look and available on the newly-launched Amazon Fashion, this functional shacket comes in two colours – we preferred the off-white option. The overall fit is a little shapeless and not the most flattering option for all body shapes, however, it's not bad for a day-to-day runaround shacket.
Now we've got you in the mood to get bundled up, why not check out our related posts on all things cosy? Whether indoors or outdoors, we've got the goods to keep you feeling cushy regardless of the weather!
Well, folks, we're afraid that's everything when it comes to women's shackets. Hopefully, we've helped you to find the perfect item to keep you covered as we move into the holiday season.
