You should first check which version of Bluetooth the speakers support as this will directly affect clarity and functionality when listening. Each version has different ranges and speeds, with Bluetooth 5 being able to run at two megabits (Mbps) per second, at ranges of up to 120 m.
Due to the price range, it's possible to come across speakers that only support older versions, such as 4.0 and 4.1. However, the lowest version of Bluetooth we would recommend is 4.2. It still has an admirable speed, clocking in around 1 (Mbps), but with a much lower 30 m range.
The amount of power for a device is measured using watts (W), it's worth understanding because it affects not only the volume but also the clarity of the device.
If you’re buying a speaker that is going to be used as the centrepiece for a house of audiophiles, then you'll want a device that pumps out more power, so something between 15-30 W should be adequate. At this strength, the device will give you around 80 dB of sound, which will provide a full soundscape, regardless of the volume.
If you’re looking for a more casual speaker, say to have on in the background while doing other jobs around the house, then you won't need as much power. We'd say anywhere between 5-15 W should be ample as this will provide plenty of scope for background noise, but won't quite have the same clarity or volume as the louder options.

The next point to consider is battery life, as using static devices plugged into the mains is so 20th century. Instead, nowadays we generally spend most of our time charging speakers so that they can be taken around with us when we move, hence why the battery life will need some consideration.
However, deciding what amount of battery power is best is easy; the longer it lasts, the better. These gadgets can run anywhere from 6 to a full 24 hours depending on the settings you’ve chosen. So the better the battery life, the less chance there is that it’s going to shut down just before your favourite bit of that song kicks in.
Some devices aren’t rechargeable, and these will use batteries instead. These tend to be lower on battery life, usually clocking in at under 10 hours, as well as having the continuous payout of purchasing the batteries. While it might seem daunting having yet another gadget in the house that needs charging, the month's electric bill is going to be cheaper than buying a new set of batteries every week.

Even in terms of Bluetooth speakers, multi-link is a relatively new feature. But it’s certainly worth considering if you’re a bit of a party person. Multi-link allows your device to be paired with another Bluetooth speaker, giving you the ability to double the volume or have the music playing in separate rooms to maintain the ambience.
It's worth mentioning, there are some discrepancies when it comes to this feature though. Some manufacturers will only let you link their products together, meaning either you’ll need to buy two devices or convince your friend to get the same ones. Also, it can be a little tricky to set up, so you’ll want to give it a practice before the big night.
You'll find that most Bluetooth speakers come with an IPX rating. This feature won’t be pertinent if you’re planning on leaving your speaker on the living room cupboard forever, but if you plan on taking your speaker out and about with you, then it’s useful to be aware of.
Used in many goods from cycling to cameras, the IPX rating is used to evaluate how robust and resistant products are to environmental conditions. An example of this would look like 'IPX55'; the first number of an IPX rating referring to how dustproof and the second for how waterproof it is. The dustproof scale ranges from 0–6, with 6 being completely dustproof; and waterproof on a 0–8 scale, with 8 being the best.
Therefore, if you want a device that can withstand longs days at the beach or weekends camping, you’ll need to look for a Bluetooth speaker that has both these ratings. Luckily, these ratings are still found on many devices within our budget!
Top Tip: consider choosing a Bluetooth shower speaker for the pool or beach!

We know we set ourselves a bigger budget, but there is nothing wrong with saving a few extra quid is there? This speaker comes in well under budget and offers an astounding 24-hour battery life, a tough and rugged IPX7 build and even a sneaky built-in microphone for smartphone assistance and hands-free calls.
Not only is it practical, but we love the aesthetics too, with the large oversized buttons giving the device a contemporary look and there is even a choice of two other colours. There are some compromises when it comes to sound, and it doesn't have the best power, but if you're working on a tight budget or only looking for something to provide backing music to your evening, this is easily going to do the job.
This Bluetooth speaker manages to sneak in our article as it's right at the top end of our budget, but there is a lot to admire here. This previous year's award-winning product probably sounds as good as you can get for this budget, with rich and well-balanced acoustics.
Furthermore, it has an admirable 12-hour battery life and an IPX7 rating which means it can even be submerged underwater for 30 minutes without becoming damaged. Our favourite feature though is the USB-C charging port, which is much quicker than the classic USB and will see this device reach a full charge in just 2.5 hours.
Sony is considered a frontrunner in the electronics business, so this means their products are normally too expensive for budget articles. However, this nifty, lightweight Srs-XB12 is very affordable but still manages to maintain the companies high-end knowledge and expertise.
The device provides ample bass, albeit with a little compromise on the high-end. There is extraordinary 16-hour battery life, making ideal for those weekends away, as well as the multi-link capabilities. Plus, if black isn't your vibe, there are six other colourways to choose from.
Ultimate Ears have become a big name in the Bluetooth speaker game, and the Wonderboom 2 is one of their biggest hits. Considering its tiny size, its packs a very impressive 17 W as well as being completely dust and waterproof.
Additionally, it has a very respectable 13 hours of playtime. When it comes to the noise it produces, this tiny dancer doesn't disappoint in that realm either. It has crisp, sharp and detailed highs as well as an impressive pounding bass, that even has a boost function. It's a little on the pricier side, but if you have the pennies you won't be disappointed.
The main highlight of this speaker is it's enormous output when it comes to power. With an incredible 40 W, it's by far the most powerful speaker on our ranking, which makes it perfect for those that want to fight for their right to party. However, alongside that, it also has another additional feature that not many other speakers have.
This unexpected function is the T6 Plus' 6600 mAh battery can be accessed and used as a power bank to charge your smartphone, so you don't need to worry about the source of your music dying.
The most surprising aspect of this device is the astonishing deep, mature and weighty bass that it produces, which is amazing considering that it's about the size of a coaster! We also really liked the rubberised strap which allows the device to be attached to your bike or other straps, making it a great travel companion.
If we are being completely honest, if it wasn't for the fact that this speaker requires batteries and only has an 8-hour battery life, it would find itself much further up this list.
The first thing to point out when it comes to W-KING's Bluetooth speaker is that it's built like a brick! So if you're looking for a rugged portable speaker, this is an excellent choice. When it comes to the sound, this system produces a full and rich spectrum, with plenty of bass.
Unlike other Bluetooth speakers, this one also allows you to tap connect via NFC, with additional 3.5mm audio jack and TF-Card slot. The sound quality isn't quite on the same level as Bose, but for the money, you can't go wrong!
This uniquely designed speaker from JBL is all about portability, hence why there is an adequately sized clip. This inclusion means you can easily hook it on to your bag and have your numbers playing as you head into the hills for your wild camping weekend. The battery lasts an impressive 10 hours, and the device is almost completely waterproof.
It does have some minor issues you'll have to overlook though, such as the 4.1 Bluetooth which will mean you'll need to keep both devices close together at all times. It also has a low wattage, so you'll experience distortion if you want to really kick out the jams.
What we love about this speaker from Anker is that due to the positioning of the elements under the skin, it pumps out tunes in 360-degrees, meaning no matter where you're in the room you'll get the same experience. It also has a handy, BassUP feature, which automatically analyses your songs, and then gives them a little oomph if they need it.
On top of these nifty features, the speaker packs an impressive 20 W of power, perfect for really exploring the full soundscape of your musical library. Our only concern is that we couldn't find which Bluetooth version it uses, which makes suspicious that it isn't going to be very good.
The first speaker in our ranking is the SoundLink Micro from music equipment mammoths, Bose. It comes with an IPX7 rating, a crisp and clear sound as well as a nifty silicone strap that allows you to attach it places when so you don't leave it behind when you've been listening to tunes in the garden.
There are some less than desirable factors though. Firstly, it requires batteries which are going to push up the cost over time. Secondly, it's already pretty expensive as it is. And finally, the multi-link functionality is only possible with other devices from Bose.
