Emily's Top 10 Perfect Breakfast Foods

Emily's Top 10 Perfect Breakfast Foods

'If you follow me over on Instagram you'll know I am obsessed with breakfast! I really started making an effort with my breakfasts during lockdown in 2020 because, honestly, there wasn't much else to do! I loved it so much I ended up making an Instagram dedicated to it (and books obviously) but I don't know how people skip breakfast!

I've left toast and cereal off this list - I am partial to a bowl of cheerios or toast dripping in butter but I thought I'd go for items a little bit better since these are my 10 Perfect Breakfast Foods!'

Who better to ask about breakfast than The Breakfast Book Club's Emily? Curated with love, Emily's third article with mybest-UK is talking about the nation's favourite wake up and go meals - and some more personal suggestions! We hope you find something that excites those tastebuds and gets you in the groove for a fantastic day.

    Porridge Rolled Oats

    Emily Woosey

Let's start with the basics - oats! I'd say 99% of my breakfasts are some form of oats. They're perfect for porridge, baked oats, blended into pancakes and cold overnight oats. I could write a dissertation on my love of oats.

Now I'm sure you don't need me to tell you how best to make your oats but... I'm going to anyway! I prefer about 45 g of oats and 190 ml of oat milk - that's quite a bit of milk compared to the oats but I find if you cook it on a low heat and stir continuously you get the creamiest oats when they're cooked! You don't even need to add any syrups!
  • Betty Crocker
    Complete Pancake Original Mix

    Emily Woosey

Whilst I mentioned above you can blend oats in pancakes - for me as a weekend treat, big fluffy American pancakes are the way to go! I make mine from scratch (most of the time!) but on occasion, I have been known to use a box kit.

Sometimes we just have too much going on! So if you have the time I'd recommend the BBC Goodfood American Pancake Recipe, but if you're rushing and still fancy pancakes the Betty Crocker Complete Pancake Mix is the best I've found! It says just add water for the perfect consistency but I prefer a milk/water mix for extra creaminess!
  • Belffles
    Premium Belgian Waffles

    Emily Woosey

Are waffles not the most indulgent breakfast item? I feel like they're just ten times better than everything else on those days where you need a little pick me up!

I am partial to a homemade waffle with all the toppings but as I don't have a waffle maker this never happens! Instead, I go for a Belgium Sugar Waffle usually topped with Nutella and strawberries! The waffles can be toasted in ten seconds making them a perfect midweek treat - but when I say ten seconds I mean it! I've lost a few waffles to the toaster when I've forgotten about them until they start smoking!

    Farm Delight Fruit Basket

    Emily Woosey

What a boring addition I hear you say. But wait! This is key - you have to heat it up! My favourite fruit breakfasts are actually the ones that require a little more effort. Think grilled pears or caramelised peaches. Honestly, it is a game-changer.

Caramelised peaches with honey and granola (mentioned below) is always a winner! I also love grilled pears with maple syrup, oats and walnuts! So easy yet seems so fancy on a cold Monday morning.

This isn't to say I don't love cold fruit - frozen berries blended with some yoghurt makes the perfect breakfast smoothie! Linked here is a fruit basket - it makes the perfect gift or just saves you going to the shop.
  • Lotus Bakeries
    Biscoff Smooth Biscuit Spread

    Emily Woosey

Biscoff has really taken off over the past few years in the UK! I know in Europe it's always been popular but lately, there seems to be a new Biscoff product every other month - and I am not complaining! I personally love the spread - it is so versatile!

I put a large spoonful into my oats or melt it in the microwave (for no more than ten seconds - I learnt that the hard way!) and drizzle it over pancakes, baked oats or waffles! If you're feeling a bit extra why not add a smashed Lotus biscuit on top as well!
  • Nutella | Morrisons
    Chocolate Spreads

    Emily Woosey

Everybody's favourite! I was going to call this one Nutella but then I remembered the white chocolate and hazelnut spread, which I could eat out of the jar, so I have cheated and included both! First of let's start with Nutella! Breakfast is just better with Nutella all year round!

As well as the usual in oats, pancakes etc I also love it on toast, topped with bananas and hazelnuts. Although it is more like a dessert than a breakfast! And then there's the White Chocolate and Hazlenut Spread - this tastes like the Kinder Bueno filling and I'm not sure why more people don't talk about it! My favourite way to eat this is with a spoon, straight from the jar!

    Honey & Almond Granola

    Emily Woosey

Simple yet essential! I actually never ate honey granola until 2020, I know - where have I been? This is probably my favourite breakfast for when I'm running late - it requires no cooking and can be made into so many varieties! I personally love honey granola and - it feels healthy?

It definitely has its health benefits but the sugar probably isn't great for you but that's not what this is about! Whilst this is in my breakfast essentials I actually eat it as a snack throughout the day - it makes me feel better about the 1033kg of chocolate I also inhale! Add a little bit of yoghurt and some fruit and this is the perfect summer breakfast!

    Mixed Nuts

    Emily Woosey

Just a daily essential really not even just for breakfast! My personal favourites are hazelnuts (probably because I eat so much chocolate), but walnuts go perfectly with honey and maple syrup. I find adding nuts into breakfasts - but especially baked oats - takes it to a whole new level.

It's the crunch and the texture I think, and obviously the taste. I'm a creature of habit so I always pair hazelnut with chocolate breakfasts, almonds with raspberry breakfasts and walnuts with fruity breakfasts. But mix and match some of my favourite breakfasts happen when I just throw them together in a rush!
  • Lindt
    Lindor Assorted Chocolate Truffles Box

    Emily Woosey

Should you eat chocolate for breakfast? No. Will I always eat chocolate for breakfast? Yes. My personal favourites are chocolate chips or Lindt balls if you're feeling fancy!

The best part about the Lindt balls is that the truffle inside melts - I chop them in half to get maximum melt and I don't think you can beat it! This is probably the only thing that can convince me not to eat them all in one go! For chocolate chips - go wild! Sprinkle them over everything! There is nothing better than getting to the end of breakfast and finding some rouge chocolate chips!
  • The Skinny Food Co.
    Zero Calorie Maple Syrup

    Emily Woosey

The holy grail! Have you seen that scene in Elf when buddy adds maple syrup to his spaghetti? Well, that's me! I would add it to everything if I could!

My choice here is the Skinny Food Co. maple syrup because it is so sugary. I have so much that I like to keep it in the fridge for everyday use! Yes, this one goes in the fridge - it thickens the consistency so it feels a bit more like real maple syrup! If I'm not going for the Skinny Food Co I tend to pick up any that say 'Candian Maple Syrup' when I'm doing my food shop!
