The Thermos flask was invented by Scottish scientist Sir James Dewar in 1892. His innovative design was born by placing one flask inside another larger flask. The two vessels are then joined at the neck and the air in between is evacuated, creating a partial-vacuum effect.
This prevents heat from escaping, keeping the liquid at the same temperature regardless of the conditions outside of the flask. Thanks to this clever innovation, we can take our drinks out and about safely in the knowledge they’ll stay hot or remain chilled for hours on end.
However, there are some specific types that stay icy for hours. These flasks usually have a slim design so that they can be used as a water bottle for sports or every day. If you are a fan of smoothies, iced drinks or slushes there are cooling Thermos flasks with straws to prevent thicker liquids coming up in large clumps.
Packing your own food saves money and can help you stick to healthy choices. However, it’s not always convenient when you want a hot meal away from home. Luckily there are Thermos flasks made specifically for food!
Thermos flasks designed for food have a wider opening than those made for drinks so you can easily get food in and out. These flasks are perfect for soup, noodles or pasta dishes and can also be used to keep foods such as fruits or salad fresh and cool outside of the fridge.
Thermos flasks designed for fizzy drinks contain an airtight valve that maintains the pressure inside stopping the fizz from escaping.
If you are looking for something for the kid’s lunchboxes, a small-sized Thermos flask that holds 350ml of liquid is ideal. Small Thermos flasks are also an ultra-portable pick for adults as they won’t take up much space in your bag or on your desk.
Large size Thermos flasks are available for when you want to transport a lot of liquid. These can hold 700ml, 1 litre, or even more, which is useful in situations where you may not have access to hot running water such as when camping or on road trips. They are also are great for sharing and taking on picnics!
Some designs are better at keeping contents warm while others excel at keeping them cool. Always check the approximate thermal retention time, especially if you require the retention for lengthy or all-day usage.
Not quite as insulating as glass or steel, plastics are sometimes used for the outer casing of the flask, so should preferably be paired with a steel inner. Waterproof and shatterproof, plastic won’t tarnish and defends against knocks and bumps.
The most common type you will find on flasks is the twist and pour lid. These lids have a wide opening with a screw stopper that you can remove partially to pour contents into a cup or remove fully to drink directly from the flask.
Look for twist and pour lids that come with an extra screw-top lid that can be used as a cup or bowl if you know you won’t have access to kitchenware.
DrinkLock lids are designed primarily for hot drinks such as teas or coffees. The lid can be clicked open and closed easily with one hand, and locks in place securely to avoid spills. These lids also come with a handy tea hook on the bottom to keep your tea bag suspended inside the flask.
Direct-pour lids flip open to reveal a deep well opening with a small hole that helps to control the flow of liquids. These are ideal for sipping hot drinks straight from the flask as you don’t have to worry about too much rushing out at once and burning your mouth.
Some flasks for cold drinks come with a removable straw. This prevents thicker drinks such as smoothies or milkshakes clumping, protect sensitive teeth from iced drinks and are a fun way to encourage kids to drink more water.
Whether you're camping, travelling or commuting to work, we have compiled below the best top 10 lunchboxes, stainless steel water bottles and reusable coffee cups to help you keep hydrated and full on the go!
