10 Best Fertilisers UK 2024 | Westland, Miracle-Gro and More

While plants, flowers, grass and trees get plenty of nutrients from the atmosphere and the soil they’re planted in, they don’t get everything they need to really flourish. That’s where garden fertiliser steps up and gives your plants a little helping hand – by providing additional minerals, it will encourage stronger, and sometimes faster, growth.

Buying fertiliser, however, can be a little confusing, so we've put together this guide to explain the differences between the options available and point you in the right direction for the needs of your plants, borders, vegetables and lawns. From there, we have some great recommendations for organic, liquid and slow-release fertilisers from established brands such as Miracle-Gro, Westland and Baby Bio.

How to Choose Fertiliser in the UK – Buying Guide

Without further ado, let’s get into the nitty-gritty. We’ll be looking at what nutrients to keep an eye out for, whether you should opt for chemical or organic food and the differences between liquid and granular options. Your indoor and outdoor plants will be flourishing in no time!

1

Understanding the NPK Rating: A Higher Percentage Equals a Higher Nutrient Content

Understanding the NPK Rating: A Higher Percentage Equals a Higher Nutrient Content

The first thing to get familiar with is a fertiliser's NPK rating, which just requires a quick biology brush-up. Basically, there are six primary foods/nutrients that plants need to survive, but the first three (oxygen, hydrogen and carbon) are found in the atmosphere and soil, so we don’t have to worry about those.

The other three are nitrogen (N), which aids plant growth, phosphorous (P) to strengthen the roots and potassium (K) to increase flower and fruit production. As these are more difficult to obtain, most fertilisers will focus on providing these. The percentage of each will be given as an NPK rating, whereby the higher the number, the more of that nutrient there is.

For example, if you see 24 - 8 - 16, that means it has three times more nitrogen than phosphorus and two-thirds of the potassium, so its main focus is growth. If it's a 7 - 7 - 7, it's a great all-rounder for plant health. Fertilisers with higher percentages do tend to be a little more expensive, so it can be a bit of a balancing act getting the best for your budget.

2

Organic Fertiliser Is Safer if You Have Pets at Home

Organic Fertiliser Is Safer if You Have Pets at Home

Next, consider whether to opt for organic or chemical fertilisers. The big reason people tend to go for organic is that it isn't toxic to animals, so if you have pets at home, this is a guaranteed way of them staying safe no matter what. Non-toxic formulas won't hurt any wild animals either, which is always nice to know.

However, one thing chemical fertilisers offer is better value. If you’re planning on building a vegetable garden, then purchasing large quantities of organic fertiliser could end up costing a small fortune over the years. It's advised to wait a couple of weeks after application before eating chemically-fed fruit and veg, though, and to wash it thoroughly.

While organic seems like the best way to go, the reality is that these often don't offer the same amount of nutrients as chemical options. Therefore, it's about balancing your desire for a great garden with price, your household's needs and how much time you're willing to spend pruning.

3

The Type of Fertiliser Will Determine How Long It Works For

The Type of Fertiliser Will Determine How Long It Works For

Many people assume that choosing between liquid or granular fertiliser is a matter of personal preference, but there is some method to it as well. Firstly, liquid, which tends to come as a concentrate that's added to a watering can or a hosepipe attachment, is often a faster-acting food but it will need to be reapplied every few weeks. It is easier to use in smaller pots, like those of your houseplants.

Dry fertiliser, meanwhile, is mixed and watered into the soil. Many gardeners find granules easier to work with because you can see exactly how much you’re using at any given time, and more crucially, where it has landed. In addition, these types don't typically need to be reapplied as often as they can last anywhere between 4 and 12 weeks, which is better if you have big outdoor beds to attend to.

Now that we’ve had a look at the main factors you should be considering when buying fertiliser, it’s time for our recommendations. We’ve focused mainly on multipurpose food rather than those specifically for certain flower or fruit species, but there are some more specific options for lawn and houseplant care.

Consistent Nutrients for a Reasonable Price

Taking our number one spot is another of Westland's products, but this time it's their Growmore. The main reason it got the headline billing is because of the consistency of the NPK, meaning that it will be compatible with a range of different plants. Not only that, but it will build your soil fertility too.

To feed your greenery, the instructions state you should use around 35 g every 4 to 6 weeks and sprinkle around the areas you wish to grow before watering. It's also not too expensive, achieving an excellent quality to price ratio. Great for all around the garden!

Visibly Better Plants in Seven Days

This is another of Miracle-Gro's top products, which still promises twice the growth but is even simpler to use. Plus, it's supposed to show visibly better plants in just seven days, which is extremely quick!

Moreover, the formula – as stated – is all-purpose, so you'll only need to buy one bottle and it'll work with all of your potted or bedded plants, flowers and vegetables. A final appealing factor is that although this is a chemical formula, it's not dangerous to children or pets.

Natural Feed for a Healthy Garden

If you want to stick to your organic principles, then of all the choices in our ranking, we would opt for this from Westland. This not only prolongs flowering and fruiting but will also help produce a greater yield, which could make your garden pop just that little bit more.

The formula is available in many different package sizes from 1.5 kg all the way up to 10 kg, which is handy as it means you don't have to commit to it straight away and can test it first. Our top recommendation if you have pets or just want to keep it natural.

The Equivalent of Steroids for Plants

If you're looking to really bulk up the growth of your flowers, fruit or veg, then Richard Jackson's Premium Plant Food is the one for you. This has a whopping percentage of additional nutrients and is essentially the equivalent of giving (healthy!) steroids to your plants.

With that in mind, it's not surprising that this award-winning formula has sold over a million packets and is a go-to for tens of thousands of gardeners. It's a little expensive, which is why it doesn't quite make our top three, but if you've got the money, you won't be disappointed.

Give All Your Potted Greenery a Helping Hand

While we're unable to confirm or deny whether this is, in fact, the original plant food, what we can tell you is that it's known for working like a treat and leaving plants greener and more vibrant. We can see why it would, too – just check out the relatively high NPK ratings

Even with the generous dose of the three essential nutrients, however, it's a total bargain, and easy to stock up with online. If you're looking to give all the potted greenery in your life a helping hand without breaking the bank, then Baby Bio will be more than capable of providing that service.

A UK Favourite for Garden and Indoor Plants

Miracle-Gro is one of the nation's most trusted brands when it comes to gardening products, and they always offer good value. Our first recommendation is this all-purpose soluble plant food that's suitable for both outdoor and indoor plants. This fast-acting food needs to be replenished once every two weeks

The company states that its formula will grow your plants twice as big as those who've had no food, which is a pretty decent return for such a cheap product! Be careful, though, as it means it will also grow your weeds twice as big, so you'll want to make sure that the garden is meticulously pruned first.

Increase the Yield on Cacti and Other Houseplants

This fertiliser from Growth Technology is specially formulated to increase the health, growth and flowering of your indoor plants. It's a precise, premium quality option that has all the nutrients needed for optimal plant happiness. As with most liquids, it just needs mixing with water – around 5 ml should do the trick.

Although suitable for all houseplants, it does work especially well with particular types, many of which most of us have at home, such as ferns, palms, poinsettias, cacti and succulents. The only downside is that you'll need to be patient. While the nutrients may be fast-acting, the additional growth can take time to yield.

A Dual Feed and Weedkiller for the Perfect Lawn

Vitax's Green Up Feed & Weed is one of the more niche products, so if you're after something to advance your ferns or tomato plants, you can look to our other recommendations. If you want to regrow a lawn or keep a prized one in tip-top shape, however, you're in luck.

The big selling point of this product is that not only does it fertilise your lawn, but it also contains a weedkiller, meaning you don't have to worry about any buttercups, dandelions or daisies getting in the way of your perfect lawn. It's not as multi-purpose as some, but it will perform its job very well.

Who Doesn’t Want a 400% Greater Yield?

This liquid plant feed from Grow Mate has some serious benefits. For example, the company say that induces up to 400% more flowering and fruiting! Not only that, but it will also increase soil fertility, therefore, establishing a healthy living microcosm in the root region.

Also, due to the formula being completely organic, it's safe for curious pets and use around children. However, owing to the fact it's all-natural, it has quite a strong smell that can stick around for up to 12 hours. Something to be aware of if you're using it for indoor houseplants!

Big Quantity at a Competitive Price

First up, we have this organic, all-purpose manure that is specially formulated to ensure that your garden plants flourish. How does it do this? Well, that's down to the competently blended rich nutrients found inside. On another note, you'll also be getting 80 litres for the price, which is quite a steal.

There is one downside, though – the NPK is not stated. While this isn't uncommon, when buying such a large amount, you'll want to make sure it's got the goods. Still, if you're looking for quantity at a competitive price, it might be worth the punt.

Summary

Whether you're looking for fertiliser for your prized roses or you want to finally get around to starting that veg patch, we hope that the products we've recommended will help you in your mission. We believe that if you follow the advice, then your plants are sure to be bigger and greener than ever!
