How to Choose a Baseball Glove in the UK

Key Points to Consider
  1. Choose a Specialist Glove for Your Position, or go with an All Position Glove for Beginners
  2. Pick an RH Glove if You Catch With Your Right, or a REG Glove if You Catch With Your Left
  3. Opt For a Leather Glove for Comfort and Durability, or Synthetic for a Cheaper, Animal-Free Alternative
  4. Look For 14” Gloves for Adults or a 9” and 11.25” for Kids and Teens
1

Choose a Specialist Glove for Your Position, or an All Position Glove for Beginners

Choose a Specialist Glove for Your Position, or an All Position Glove for Beginners

Baseball gloves can be designed to cover just about every aspect of the game or for one particular position. This specialist nature is where the premium baseball brands start to leave the more budget-friendly options behind, as they are known to hone in on every position on the field.

If you're already hitting home runs and catching outfield screamers, then a specialist glove to suit your regular spot is more than warranted. There's a choice between a pitcher, outfield, first base, catcher, infield and training glove for total field domination.

Or maybe you're someone who just wants to have a hit with your kids down the park, or perhaps you've just signed up to your local community club? If so, then a specialist glove would be a tad over the top. Instead, you might benefit more from an 'all position' glove to learn the ropes so you can hit the ground running!

2

Pick an RH Glove if You Catch With Your Right, or a REG Glove if You Catch With Your Left

Pick an RH Glove if You Catch With Your Right, or a REG Glove if You Catch With Your Left

This may seem like an obvious point, but you would be surprised at how many people tend to slip up when it comes to hand orientation. You'll find that each baseball glove will be labelled as 'REG', 'RH' or 'ambidextrous', although ambidextrous gloves are far from common.

The confusion lies between REG and RH gloves. REG gloves are right hand throw gloves, meaning you catch with the left and throw with the right. As some studies show that 90% of the world's population are right-handed, most of us will be looking for REG when on the hunt for a new glove.

On the other hand, RH gloves are intended for right hand catchers and left hand throwers. As only 10% of the population are estimated to be lefties, the options for these gloves are unfortunately a lot less. If you're a lefty, look out for market-leading brands that can afford to offer an extensive range of gloves for both hand orientations.

3

Opt For a Leather Glove for Comfort and Durability, or Synthetic for a Cheaper, Animal-Free Alternative

Opt For a Leather Glove for Comfort and Durability, or Synthetic for a Cheaper, Animal-Free Alternative

There's no denying that the undisputed, go-to material for baseball gloves is the high-quality, real-feels of genuine leather. Being durable, breathable and extremely comfortable by softening and moulding with age, genuine leather is adored by professionals and amateurs alike.

The only problem with genuine leather is, well, it's not cheap. Costing a fair penny due to its long processing time, which involves curing, tanning and drying the hide of animals, quality, genuine leather is almost always accompanied by a high price

This makes synthetic leather a clever option for youth and adults players who aren't fully committed to the idea of baseball. Although synthetic leather is produced with plastic-based materials, it still offers a very durable and workable glove that'll see you through a few seasons of minor league ball.

Look For 11.75” - 14” Gloves for Adults, and 9” - 11.25” for Kids and Teens

Look For 11.75” - 14” Gloves for Adults, and 9” - 11.25” for Kids and Teens

It's essential to get the size of your glove right, but with baseball being so entrenched in American culture, you simply can not escape the use of inches when sizing up a glove. The measurements are taken from the tip of the index finger and along the palm to the glove's heel

The standard sizing for most adult baseball gloves sits between 11.75" and 12.5", with women generally preferring gloves on the lower end of the scale. However, if you spend a lot of time in the outfield, you might want to opt for a larger glove in the 12.5" - 14" range. This added length will significantly help you gain more reach when it counts.

As far as youth gloves are concerned, there's quite a large variance in size, which is often, but not always, influenced by their age. The sizing tends to start at 9" for 4 - 6-year-olds and incrementally increases to 11.25" - 12" gloves for teens. That said, the best way to choose for children is to follow the brand's sizing guidelines.

Synthetic Pitcher’s Glove in a Wide Range of Sizes

Having produced baseball gloves for well over 100 years, the American sporting equipment brand 'Wilson' likely know a thing or two about the game. This is their pitcher's glove which comes in a wide-reaching range for all hand sizes to flourish with.

This is a high-tech series of gloves for the established baseball crew looking to take their game to the next level. The glove is made of synthetic leather, however, the design and features more than prove its worth.

Baseball Glove for Beginner to Intermediate Players

The second baseball glove on the list from Decathlon's own brand, Kipsta, packs a lot in for the price. At 12.5", the glove is intended for beginners and intermediate players in all positions to learn and progress through the ranks.

Another genuine leather glove for a reasonable price that'll see adults and older teens take on the game with their best hand forward. The black and red leather glove is bound together with leather stitching creating a glove that signals to the opposition that you're here to win!

Iconic Brown Leather Glove for the Outfield

Another glove by the price-savvy Barnett, although this one has clearly left the budget-grouping behind and entered the mid-range on quality. Intended for teenagers from 14 years who have big dreams in the outfield, this right-hand throw glove is a great option for the price.

The glove is made of genuine pigskin leather, giving it a real baseball feel for the young and beginner players to experience. Obviously, the build quality won't be up to the same high standard as premium gloves, but that doesn't stop it from looking the part.

Unisex Pair of Batting Gloves Goat Leather Palm for Grip

When most people think of a baseball glove, they think of a nice wide glove to catch every ball that is smacked into the sky or thrown their way. While this is predominantly where the attention lies, a pair of batting gloves is a clever way of gaining more grip and keeping your hands blister-free.

The Rawlings unisex batting pair is available in small to extra large and comes with a size guide so you can get it just right. With a goat leather palm and polyester backing, this glove is incredibly durable as well as breathable.

Elasticated Fabric Glove for Training

With a very eye-catching design from Franklin, and some bright neon yello detailing, this glove is ready to impress. It also comes with a training ball, so you can get a round of catch in straight out of the pack.

Arriving 100% broken-in in a ready-to-play style, it means your child won't have to go through the sometimes painful process of breaking in their glove. Being constructed of elasticated fabric, this glove really is only for the youngest baseball, softball and t-ball players to feel out the game.

Budget Baseball Glove in REG and RH

Barnett may not be one of the big-hitting brands of the baseball arena, but that hasn't stopped them from producing a great budget-friendly range of products. For the price, this outfield glove is as good as any you'll find on the internet.

It's made of synthetic leather, which does make it feel a little less soft than some of the genuine leather gloves further up the list. However, what it does benefit from is palm reinforcement and a soft interior, which makes it more than comfortable enough for beginners.

Left Hand Throw Glove for Beginners and Youths

Designed for beginner youths with a choice between a 9.5" and 10.5" glove, Kipsta is looking to equip the next generation of baseball talent. However, unfortunately, Decathlon is currently only stocking this particular glove in left-hand throw.

Made of synthetic leather, the glove will require some airing out when not in use, especially while it's new. That said, this is a great first glove to help your youngest kids learn to catch and throw, and being a budget option, it's a great choice for easing into the sport to see if they want to continue.
