Rear-mounted seats are a more common sight on the roads than front-mounted styles because they’re larger, meaning that they will be suitable for kids from 6 months all the way up to 4 years old.
Here are the three different types:
Front-mounted seats tend to attach to the top bar of the bike or just below the handlebars, with the seat itself sitting just in front of your legs. This allows your child to hold the handlebar and see what you see while cycling, which is a great way to keep them entertained!
This type of seat also means you can keep your balance easier, as the added weight is more central on the bike. However, you may find that the seat can get in the way of your natural cycling motion, forcing you to move your legs out slightly as you pedal.
Consider a bike seat cover to make riding around even more comfortable.
You may be surprised to learn that the age range for children’s bike seats is actually rather large, with most seats being suitable for children between 6 months and 4 years old – it is not recommended to take kids under the age of 6 months. Both the upper and lower age range act as guides dependent on other factors.
At the lower age range, the most important thing is to make sure your child can sit upright without help. This means being able to sit on the floor, holding their head and body up without any support from cushions or anything else to lean on.
Weight is the key factor for children at the upper end of the age range, with around 20 kg being the average weight limit for most seats. You shouldn't go over this limit because, in addition to there being a chance that the bike seat could break, the handling of the bike will become worse with each kilogram of extra weight.
Invest in a sturdy bike helmet for kids to protect your little one while on the road.
There are many conflicting reports on the compatibility of child bike seats with certain models and types of bike, but you'll find that the majority of bike seats will be suitable for all but the more uncommon bike designs. Whether you have a road, mountain or cruiser bike, there will be a seat for you.
A good rule of thumb is to look at how the seat attaches to the bike, with most fixed to a rear rack or seat tube. Nearly all bikes will be able to accommodate one of these two designs, but it is worth double-checking whether your bike has suspension that could prevent fitting a child's seat.

This offering from Topeak may come across as expensive at first glance but you have to keep in mind that, unlike most others, it comes with an included rack to attach to your bike. The attachment itself comes with dual suspension springs too, making this seat incredibly smooth for a rack-mounted option.
Plus, it may just be the safest seat on our list ― the roll bar and high back mean that your child is protected from all sides. In fact, many customers have reported that the seat prevented their child from sustaining serious injuries after being involved in an accident. We can't think of a more important reason to make this our top product!
As with the rest of our top 3, the Thule RideAlong is both excellently designed and focused on keeping your child as safe as possible while you're out on the road. The water-repellent cushioning is even reversible if you fancy a different colour.
The cantilevered attachment means the seat easily attaches and detaches in a matter of seconds. It also has a safety indicator, so you're always sure that everything is fitted correctly. Solid protection for a reasonable price, what more could you ask for?
If we were shopping purely with aesthetics in mind, the Urban Iki would win hands down. Luckily, it isn't a case of style over substance as it's also one of the best seats in terms of functionality. The unique five-point harness even allows you to strap your child in with only one hand!
The cantilever attachment also provides ample suspension alongside the adjustable footrests and ergonomically designed bucket, meaning your child will enjoy every minute of being out and about rather than feeling every bump in the road.
When it comes to front-mounted seats, it can be difficult to find one that doesn't get in the way of your legs when cycling. The Oxford Little Explorer is compact enough that you won't bang your knees as you pedal. Plus, the ergonomic padded seat will keep your little one nice and comfortable.
This seat has a fairly universal fit (providing your bike has a traditional frame) and the addition of footpegs with straps provides an extra level of security often lacking in front-mounted seats. This is a bike seat that you'll barely notice is there while riding!
This offering from HAMAX is an inexpensive choice that's easy to attach and detach thanks to the quick-release system. It will make a click sound when the bracket is safely locked, and green indicators appear when the bars are correctly mounted.
Your child will be secured by both the ergonomic seat and the feet straps, plus the wheel guard attachments will protect their toes from the spokes. Considering this is a bargain bike seat, it's brilliantly designed and seems like it should cost more!
The unique feature of the Polisport Groovy RS Plus is that it has three reclining settings, going from 0 degrees to a 10 and 20-degree angle. When you combine this with the adjustable footrests and conveniently placed armrests, you have one of the most comfortable seats around!
The price this product sits at is somewhere between the truly elite seats which are a little more expensive and budget options which are almost half the price. We think it's well worth the money but you may want to spend a little more to get the most bang for your buck.
The Avenir snug carrier by Raleigh has a 3 point harness and adjustible footrests to accommodate your little one as they grow. Made entirely from plastic, it's lightweight yet sturdy and has a smart design that will keep your child safely strapped in.
Unfortunately, some Amazon reviewers have noted that this seat isn't very comfy for children who are taller than 100 cm. If you have a smaller toddler though, it should work well and it won't break the bank either!
Here's another great option for those on a budget. We particularly like how colourful the design is, which is an often underrated feature in this type of product. When introducing a child to a hobby, or something new, we find that a burst of bright colour can help to keep them happy!
The only downsides are that it's not universally compatible and if a battery is already installed as a side click on your bike, then this seat won't fit. If you have a suitable bike though, this is an affordable seat that's worth considering.
Although you'll find that most bike seats on the market are suitable for children up to around 4 or 5 years old, this one is designed to take the extra weight of those up to 10 years old. It's perfect for kids who are comfortable sitting on a bike but haven't got the pedal power themselves for longer journeys.
There is no doubt that this seat is brilliant at what it does, but it is something of a niche product as many children over 5 will be more than happy to cycle themselves. It also folds down when not in use, making it difficult to detach.
Most of the items on this list are designed for general road travel, but this option is one for mountain bike enthusiasts who want to take their child along and introduce them to the hobby. It comes in the form of a regular-style bike seat that attaches to the bottom bar of a bicycle frame.
Since this seat is designed for older children, there's no way to strap your child into the seat and there are no handles included either ― so you'll want to make sure they're able to reach the bike's handlebars to hold on.
One final piece of advice to mention is that while it is technically possible to fit multiple child seats to a bike, we wouldn’t recommend doing so. The added weight of multiple seats, and therefore multiple children, causes serious issues on anything but the flattest surfaces.
An extra 40 kg of potential weight can make a bike’s handling very unwieldy and awkward, adding a layer of risk when cycling. When you add young children into the mix, it’s much better to opt for a child trailer instead when travelling. This will ensure all of your little ones stay as safe as possible while you’re on the road.
