We think it would be fair to say that guitarists spend many an hour fawning over the guitars they want to buy. We meticulously research new releases and discuss them with our friends until we’re blue in the face, but something we don’t consider quite as much is where we’re going to store our precious axe once we get hold of it! Despite being overlooked, guitar stands and hangers are a crucial purchase for every player, from the studio to the stage.
But which one should you buy? There are lots to choose from, from single wall-mounts to display your trusty acoustic on the wall to electric rack stands that hold multiple guitars. We’ll cover all the guitar stand basics before showing you some of our favourites to buy in the UK at Amazon, eBay, and Gear4music, including models from top brands like Hercules and Fender.

Free-standing stands can be divided into two categories: the A-stand and the tubular stand. An A-stand has two legs and holds the guitar just at the body, whereas a tubular one has a pole connected to the tripod feet that's designed to hold the neck of the instrument. Both are considered free-standing as neither are attached to anything to help carry the weight.
While we would say, that tubular is probably the most popular style out of the two, both of these options are relatively cheap and easy to assemble. They’re often collapsible as well, making them a solid choice for travelling to gigs.
The hanger-style stand is perfect for those who are short on floor space. These are attached to the wall via screws; then, once in the wall, the stand has two yokes (arms) that come out to hold the guitar's headstock.
Hangers can be made from wood, metal, or plastic, but all will come with some padding to ensure that your instrument isn’t damaged when placed there. However, you should check the weight capacity of the stand, particularly if you have a heavier guitar like a vintage Les Paul. Also, if you don't own your home, you'll need to seek permission before putting hangers up.

Finally, you have the stand for those who can’t seem to stop buying equipment! A multiple instrument rack can come in many shapes and sizes, holding anything from 3 to 9 instruments. So, if you own plenty of guitars already and plan on getting more, this will likely be the best option for you.
These racks work similarly to free-standing stands, but they will have a long line of neck holders and, in some cases, a back section. The downside is that they can take up a fair bit of floor space, especially if you’re picking up one of the larger ones.
Another key feature to consider, especially if you’re looking to keep your equipment in tip-top shape, is the type of padding on the stand. All stands will have this in some form or another, so you don’t have to worry too much - but you may want extra if you're storing a particularly rare guitar.
The most common types of padding on guitar stands are made from foam or rubber. While both will do a decent job of protecting your gear, foam is less durable and might therefore require replacing sooner than rubber.
On more expensive stands, you may find non-marring plastic. While this is hard and may not strike you as a protective material, it is! So, you can rest assured that it'll encase your guitar without causing any scratches or scrapes.

Due to the amazing quality of its products, Hercules has managed to take the top two spots in our ranking! Our number 1 stand is this classic free-standing option, which can be appreciated by pretty much everyone. The neck has the same auto-lock features as the other Hercules product, as well as a narrow neck adjuster that makes it safe for storing banjos and mandolins.
Unlike other racks, this one's mechanism uses a locking pin to make it extra-safe, although it's still easy to use. The height is also adjustable, which is always handy! It's well worth forking out for this solid stand that ensures the ultimate protection for your gear.
Hercules is known for producing no-nonsense gear, hence why their wall hangers are super popular. This particular hanger has a couple of design features that make it stand out from the crowd, such as the auto swivel yokes, which allow for different headstocks to fit comfortably on the stand without any alterations being needed.
Moreover, a locking feature is included within the yokes, which will keep the guitar securely in place - even if someone accidentally knocks into it after a long session in the studio. Simple, straightforward, and incredibly reliable, this is a firm favourite of many musicians!
If you're looking for a stand that can hold plenty of equipment, this five-way rack from D4P is a brilliant economical option. The design allows it to hold everything from electric basses to classical acoustics. Not only that, but it uses robust rubber padding too for maximum protection.
Of course, this stand is going to require more floor space than the other options on our list, so you'll want to make sure you space is large enough. That being said, if you have a home studio that you use regularly, then this rack will save you the hassle of fishing different guitars out of their cases every time you want to use a specific one.
You can always rely on Fender to produce top-quality goods that are great value for money - thankfully, this applies to their accessories as well. While this stand is simple and inexpensive, it features foam-padded yokes that will protect your instrument from scratches and bumps.
Sure, this metal stand isn't the fanciest one around - but that's not always a bad thing! It's sturdy, has an adjustable height, and is collapsible, making it easy to transport to gigs. That's all many guitarists will need on a day-to-day basis.
Planet Waves has produced a brilliant little hanging stand here, which they've affectionately named the "Guitar Dock". The design is compact, easy to use, and has an adjustable clamp. Moreover, thanks to the 360-degree rotation, it can be mounted at any angle - pretty convenient, right?
Additionally, the company has opted for rubber protection to keep your gear safe. We also love the little cut-out in the back of the design, which provides a place to store guitar accessories that are easily lost. We're thinking of you, picks!
While some multiple instrument racks look like they couldn't stand up to a strong breeze, that's not the case with the K&M Guardian. It can hold up to five guitars and looks capable of surviving a tornado and tsunami at the same time! We also like the use of non-marring plastic, which not only protects your instruments but will be unlikely to wear down any time soon.
Although this stand looks bulky, it's around the average size of a five-way rack in terms of dimensions. Best of all, the way the spaces have been designed means that the rack can hold a wide range of guitars, no matter their shape or size.
If you're the owner of an unorthodox shape guitar (think Fender Jazzmaster, Gibson Explorer, or Mosrite), finding a stand that fits its contours can be difficult. Thankfully, the folks at Gear4music considered you when building this A-stand!
The yokes and the tip of the A are fully adjustable so that they can accommodate unconventional styles without fuss. This might not be a stand for the traditionalists, but it's perfect for offset-loving players.
Many people want a stand to keep their equipment safe that's easily accessible. If this is the case (pun intended), then this wall hanging stand probably won't be for you, as it's primarily designed for displaying guitars.
It's built using the same reliably robust material as traditional Fender hard cases, ensuring durability no matter what. The design comes with the classic Fender tweed finish and a luxuriously soft plush interior. Just check which models the case will fit as it is quite an expensive option!
This five-space guitar rack is collapsible and quick to set up, so it pretty much guarantees that you can have any type of guitar or bass handy whenever you need it. This makes it ideal not only for collectors and those running a studio but also for travelling musicians.
RockGear uses foam protection to safeguard against scratches or scrapes on the instrument, plus there are rubber feet on the legs to keep it from slipping around on the ground. Our only concern is that the design is a little lightweight considering the price, but it should still be fairly sturdy.
The final option in our ranking is a three-pack of hanging stands. These all come with sponge-covered yokes, screws, and wall anchors. Plus, they can hold instruments up to 19 kg.
Furthermore, the yokes are rotatable, which allows you to store instruments with more unique headstocks, such as ukeleles and banjos. The only downside is that the anchors aren't naturally black and are instead painted, which means they could flake over time if not looked after properly.
When looking for a stand for nitrocellulose finish, it's best to go for brands that produce nitrocellulose guitars such as Fender. The manufacturers of stands will state that they are suitable for the nitrocellulose finish, so just make sure you check the spec of the product.
Hercules, one of the best manufacturers of guitar stands out there, produce them in the USA.
Guitar stands shouldn't damage your guitars. Just make sure that the stand you are using is in good condition, especially the parts of the stand that touch the guitar.
