How to Choose a Light Box for Photography in the UK - Buying Guide

Many of the boxes you'll see online can appear very similar at first glance but may not be suitable for the project you have in mind. You might want to photograph a certain sized object, take your light box outside, or dress up the setting with different backgrounds, for instance. Our buying guide is here to help you find the right one.

1

Getting the Right Sized Light Box Is Crucial

Getting the Right Sized Light Box Is Crucial

It may seem obvious, but you’ll want to make sure that the light box you buy can fit the objects you want to photograph inside; this can be a surprisingly common problem when shopping online as some pictures may not reflect the actual working dimensions of the product.

If the box is too small, you may not be able to frame your photographs properly (if the item fits in at all) and larger boxes will cost more.

There is quite a large range in sizes among various light boxes, although most you’ll find online are between 20 x 20 x 20 cm and 80 x 80 x 80 cm. This is quite a big difference, so it’s well worth double checking the dimensions of the light box you're considering against those of your intended subjects.

2

Understand How Lighting Is Measured and How to Relate This to a Light Box

Understand How Lighting Is Measured and How to Relate This to a Light Box

When looking at light boxes, you're likely to see a lot of different numbers and letters which essentially refer to the level of brightness within the box. You'll often see L, or LM, which stands for lumens and measures how bright a light source is; this is often how light bulbs are measured. The higher the number, the brighter the light source is

Another letter you may see is K, which stands for Kelvin. In photography terms, this refers to the temperature of light and something called white balancing.

If you think of it in terms of times of day, the red and orange glow of a sunrise or sunset is around 2,500 K whereas the bright blue of a clear sky is 10,000 K; taking pictures in either of these extremes will cause your image to have a red or blue tint respectably. For a balanced white image, around 5,500 K is the magic number for a light box.

All Light Boxes Are Designed With Portability in Mind but Will Require a Power Source

One of the great benefits of a light box over a traditional home studio setup is that they’re highly portable in comparison. The best options are designed in a way that they fold down flat or are easily carried around like a duffle bag. This makes them incredibly simple to move from one location to another.

As they contain lights, a photography light box will also require power to operate. Many light boxes on the market are powered by USB meaning that, even if not battery powered itself, you can use an external power bank to shoot outside.

This does depend on the strength of the lights, though, as more powerful lighting will usually require a mains supply, so it's wise to check before you buy.

4

Consider Different Background Colours to Improve Your Photography

Consider Different Background Colours to Improve Your Photography

While nearly all light boxes are white on the inside for the most optimal lighting conditions, a number of options come with different coloured backgrounds which allow you to change your setup whenever you want.

This can be a great way to highlight different products in a range when selling online, or to contrast certain colours of a more artistic subject.

Don't worry, these aren’t a simple coloured piece of paper – they’re usually made of the same material as the box itself, which is typically a form of light diffusing fabric or plastic. This is to make sure that there isn’t any uneven lighting or reflections on the background colour.

Samtian specialise in photography-based equipment and all of their products have a great build quality. The light is evenly distributed and the inclusion of a light diffuser and adjustable brightness makes this a fantastic buy when dealing with larger objects.

While small, it's perfect for miniatures or models as well as it features nice curved edges so you can get the angle you desire. If you're working with smaller items, this light box is well worth picking up as it's surprisingly stable and will serve you well.

Classy Background Colours and Great Brightness Options

While most light boxes will include a selection of bright colours, this one has opted for more sophisticated background hues which work very well when shooting more premium items like watches and sunglasses.

We know you don't just get a light box for the coloured backgrounds it includes, so we're happy to say that this also a quality box. The adjustable brightness goes up to a very high level, and it includes three different openings for your needs. It even contains an additional light diffuser to take away any unwanted glare.

Lightweight and Easy With a Step-Less Dimmer

When it comes to setting up and folding down, this option from Samtian is one of the best of the larger boxes. Lined with reflective fabric and featuring step-less dimming, it's easy to get the right angle and brightness on whatever you're shooting.

This is a solidly built, reliable product and while there may be brighter boxes out there, or ones with additional features, you won't find any issues with this option; it even includes a year warranty. If you can see yourself using your light box on the daily, a reliable product that's easy to use is essential.

A Huge Portable Photo Studio

If you're looking for a large, quality light box then this offering from Amazon is one of the best you can get. It's incredibly easy to fold away and set up, and contains multiple openings so you can always get the angle you desire.

The only drawback is that it is expensive and you're only really paying for the size. Once you get over the £100 mark, you may expect some additional features like moveable lighting which this sadly lacks. Still, for large items, you'll struggle to do much better outside of a professional studio.

Adjustable Brightness Is a Welcome Addition to This Low-Priced Option

Another entry into the foldable, budget category is the Polame Portable Photo Studio. This model has the all-important topside opening, but what sets it a level above the previous products is the adjustable brightness which can make a big difference.

As with other similar designs, the main drawback is the size and sturdiness, but if you're happy to spend a little more, there is a larger option available. However, we think there may be some more value to be had further down our list if you're looking for a larger box.

The Opening on the Top Makes All the Difference

While slightly smaller than the previous entry in our list, this model has an opening on the top to provide the extra angle which is often crucial when dealing with these kinds of boxes. Being small can also be useful if you don't have much space to work with

It is, however, important to remember to leave some space around the object you're shooting. As they are designed to fold down, these kinds of boxes aren't the most sturdy so take care when placing objects which may only just fit.

Perfect for Shooting Small Items on a Budget

If you're looking for something small and easy to set up and fold down, then it's worth considering this option. There are a few different designs of this type, and this one lends itself well to taller items as it's more of a rectangle than a box.

The main drawback that some might see with this box, aside from its smaller size, is that it doesn't have a way to shoot from the top down. Usually, models like this will have a hole in the top to provide an additional angle, but it's sadly missing from this one.

A Great Large Size, but No Extras

The Neewer Square Perfect Tent is a great option if you're looking for a large light box at an affordable price. Due to its design, it's incredibly portable and easy to fold away into a neat flat circle.

The main drawback with this option is that it doesn't include the lighting itself, making it one for those of you who already have some lighting available. While this is not a suitable purchase for everyone, we thought it was still worth mentioning due to the cheap price for such a large box.

What Is a Light Box?

What Is a Light Box?
Source:amazon.co.uk

As the name suggests, a light box (or 'tent') is a box that has lights inside so that anything you place inside is lit for photography. The layout is designed so that there are no shadows or overly bright areas on the subject of your photo. Usually, there are rows of LED lights on the top of the box which won’t interfere with your shoot.

The front face of the box is left open so you can easily frame your shot against the plain background. Some models also have holes big enough for you to put your camera lens in at the top, so you can get a flat-lay view of whatever you are photographing.

It's important to get the right size to have plenty of space around the object in order to avoid getting the light box itself in the shot. Once you have this sorted though, you will soon wonder how you ever coped without one!
