How to Choose a Mattress Topper in the UK

There’s lots of different options when it comes to buying the perfect mattress topper online, so get your favourite jammies and a cup of cocoa ready and we’ll have a look at what you can buy for some well-deserved shut eye!

1

Consider the Material Used to Fill the Mattress Topper

Consider the Material Used to Fill the Mattress Topper

Mattress toppers can be made out of a variety of different materials, both natural and synthetic. So let us now take a look at the different materials to help you decide which one will suit you best.

Memory Foam: Moulds to the Body, but Fairly Warm

Memory foam is a popular choice for mattress toppers as it's really comfortable. That's because it uses your body heat to contour to the shape of your body, offering total support.

It's especially good if you suffer from aches and pains as it minimises the stress put upon certain points on your body while you sleep, such as your hips and shoulders. It can also help absorb any movement from your partner, helping you both to sleep better.

While it is amazingly comfortable, memory foam can be hot to sleep on as it doesn’t allow much air circulation. It also comes at a higher price point than its alternatives and can have a strong smell initially, which some may find off-putting.

Memory foam pillows and memory foam floor mattresses are quite popular, too!

Gel Memory Foam: Cooler, but Can Have a Chemical Smell

Gel memory foam is a variant of memory foam and, whilst it shares many of the same properties (including pricepoint and strong initial smell) as memory foam, the use of gel means that it's much cooler to sleep on. The gel layer or pockets inside the topper work to keep your body cool, much in the same way as a gel ice pack.

Polyester Fibre Fillings: Cheaper, but Not as Durable

Polyester fibre fillings (sometimes also known as hollowfibre) are very popular for mattress toppers. This is because they are soft and easy to clean. They’re usually more affordable than other options too, and give that 'pillow top' feeling - if that’s what you’re after.

While they have lots of great qualities, polyester fillings are not as durable as other options and can go a bit flat after prolonged use. This means that you’ll need to replace them sooner than you would otherwise.

Take a look at our mattress protectors and summer duvets for more affordable polyester bedding!

Feather or Down: Luxurious, but Not Firm

If you want the ultimate feeling of luxury, then feather and down mattress toppers should be top of your list! Not only are they super squishy and soft, they are very durable and also great for regulating your body temperature as you sleep, so you'll never get too hot or too cold.

While they are a great option, they won’t suit lovers of firmer mattresses. They will also need a fair but of fluffing and plumping to help keep them in good shape. Over time you may start to feel the feather quills poking through the cover, which can be uncomfortable.

Wool: Good for Allergy Sufferers, but Costly

Wool is a wonderfully soft and natural material that’s perfect for allergy sufferers. It naturally repels bed bugs and dust mites, helps to keep you cool in summer and is snuggly warm in the winter. Best of all, it's exceptionally durable, often lasting for years and years.

While it has lots of positive attributes, it can be fairly costly! So you'll need to consider it as more of an investment than other toppers would be. This is something to seriously think about, as it doesn’t offer as much cushioning as other options either.

2

Is It Thick Enough for You?

Is It Thick Enough for You?

Mattress toppers come in a variety of different thicknesses depending on what they’re made out of and how much they cost. Mattress toppers that are around 5 cm in thickness will offer you a good level of comfort, whereas mattress toppers that are thicker offer more cushioning, giving an old mattress a new lease of life.

If you prefer a firmer mattress, then thick pillowy mattress toppers may not be to your liking. Similarly, if you're looking to improve an old mattress that you’re not quite ready to replace, thinner mattress toppers may come as a disappointment.

3

Consider What Type of Cover the Mattress Topper Has

Consider What Type of Cover the Mattress Topper Has

Most mattress toppers have a cover, either fixed or removable, so that your skin isn’t in direct contact with the filling. You'll want to find out what material the cover is made of, as this can affect how comfortable it is to sleep on.

Synthetic covers, such as microfibre and polyester, are really soft and durable, but can make an otherwise breathable mattress topper very hot and sticky in the warmer months. Cotton covers are more breathable, but might not be the best match for a feathers or down filling unless it's really high quality cotton!

If breathability is your priority, get a cotton bed sheet too for maximum comfort.

This topper works like magic to keep you cool on warm nights, as well as cosy in the depths of winter. Its amazing quality and the craftsmanship that's gone into it is clear to see. While it's definitely an investment, you won't find a better mattress topper out there!

Breathable and Helps Prevent Aches and Pains

Pro: breathable, reduces heat build-up | Con: not very thick

This topper from Slumberdown is made from a springy foam that relieves pressure as you sleep to prevent aches and pains, so you are free to move around in bed as much as you like. It also reduces heat build up as, unlike standard memory foam, it contains breathable fibres that allow air to flow freely.

We love this topper as an affordable option to help you prolong the life of your old mattress. Not to mention, it's incredibly comfortable to sleep on!

Deep Gel Memory Foam for Optimum Comfort

Pro: moisture wicking, very thick | Con: takes a while to flatten after unpacking

This topper from Inofia has a non-slip base along with four straps to keep it firmly in place as you sleep, while the gel memory foam will help you regulate your body temperature without compromising on comfort.

The small box this topper arrives in belies its size, with an extra-deep, pillowy softness that's sure to give your old mattress a new lease of life. The manufacturer also offers a 100 night risk free trial, so you can return it if you're not totally satisfied.

A Hotel Quality Topper That's Great Value for Money

Pro: regulates body temperature, good value for money | Con: not very firm

This hotel quality mattress topper from BedStory helps to regulate your body temperature as you sleep to promote better rest. The plush polyester filling is supportive and comfortable, and the durable microfibre cover feels soft and velvety to the touch.

While it isn't as thick as you would expect, it's very comfortable and offers great value for money when compared with other similar toppers available. Just be aware that it won't be suitable if you're looking for firmer support as it is very soft and pillowy.

No.5

Silentnight
Airmax Mattress Topper

Dual Layer Construction for Breathability

Pro: hypoallergenic, machine washable | Con: prone to compression

The Silentnight airmax mattress topper is designed to increase airflow and air circulation, featuring a dual construction and mesh side walls that allows air to move freely between the layers.

Filled with deep hollowfibre, it's also hypoallergenic and machine washable, so you can keep your topper feeling fresh and clean for longer. The only downside is that this topper can compress quite quickly, with some seeing a pronounced dip in the space where they sleep.

Moulds to Your Body for Firm Support

Pro: hypoallergenic, machine washable | Con: not very soft to the touch

This mattress topper from Silentnight is designed to relieve pressure, back pain, and aches by moulding to your body to provide excellent support. The polyester cover is machine washable to help keep it fresh, and the topper is hypoallergenic.

Lovers of soft squishy mattresses may want to give it a miss as this one is made to give a firmer feel. As with a lot of memory foam, it does tend to make you feel quite warm as you sleep. So we similarly wouldn't recommend it if you're a hot sleeper.

A Pillow-Like Topper That's Environmentally Friendly

Pro: luxurious feel, environmentally-friendly material | Con: feathers clump together

This mattress topper is generously filled with premium duck feathers, turning your bed into a luxurious pillow-top mattress. The 100% cotton casing is soft and breathable, and all the materials used are environmentally friendly and non-toxic.

Unfortunately, some have found that this topper went flat quicker than they would have expected it to given the higher price point. This is because the feathers tend to clump together, so you'll need to shake it out regularly.

Box Design for Comfort and Longevity

Pro: quality double-stiched cover | Con: feathers may stick out

This topper has a 100% goose feather filling, with a cotton cover that repels dust mites and is double stitched to prevent feathers from escaping. It is made using a box baffle structure that keeps the feathers within compartments that stop them from clumping to prolong the life of the topper.

That said, despite the best efforts of the manufacturer, the feathers do seem to escape to a certain degree. However, some found that adding a mattress protector on top made it much less noticeable.

Two Layer Design to Help Keep You Cool as You Sleep

Pro: reinforced elasticated straps, soft support | Con: not very thick

This topper from Slumberdown features two soft-touch toppers that are connected via a breathable middle layer that gently supports the contours of your spine, whilst allowing air to circulate. It's designed to offer a low level of support and is ideal for people who prefer a soft or medium mattress.

Whilst the topper is advertised as being 4 cm thick, it takes a lot of plumping to achieve this. So if you're expecting a thick topper then this may be a slight disappointment.

A Gel Topper With an Egg Crate Texture

Pro: reversible design | Con: may feel too warm

This topper from Aidapt has an egg crate texture that contours to your body, whilst its gel-infused beads help regulate body temperature for a good night's sleep. It is designed to fit snugly under tightly fitted sheets, which is why it has a reversible design with one side being flat.

Despite being advertised as a gel foam topper that's meant to keep you cool, some found it very hot even on cooler nights. So while it is comfy, it doesn't totally fulfill its promises.

Summary

That concludes our top 10 ranking of mattress topper recommendations! We hope that you found the perfect topper to help you rest easy, and to relieve any morning aches and pains you may have so that you can sleep like a baby every night from now on. Sweet dreams!
