How to Choose a Potty in the UK

Key Points to Consider
  1. Pick a Potty That’s the Right Size and Height
  2. Look for Design Features Like Splash Guards and High Backrests
  3. Select a Portable Potty for Training on the Go
1

Choose a Potty That’s Suitable for Your Child by Making Sure You Pick the Right Size and Height

Choose a Potty That’s Suitable for Your Child by Making Sure You Pick the Right Size and Height

Not All Children Fit Standard Sizing So Check the Dimensions to Ensure the Potty Is Suitable

As they’re designed for use by children within a fairly set age range, potty sizes don’t tend to fluctuate too much. Still, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t remain mindful when purchasing, particularly as your child may well be using their new potty for upwards of 6 months.

If your child is slightly smaller or larger than average, however, it’s always a smart idea to double-check the dimensions just to make sure the potty you're looking at will be suitable.

Consider the Height: Toddlers With Longer Legs Will Need a Taller Seat

Another factor to take into consideration is the height. When training your little one, it pays to make sitting on the potty as comfortable as possible, and one way of ensuring this is to make sure their potty is high enough.

A potty that is too low will require your child to sit awkwardly with their knees bunched up, or their legs splayed out to the side - which, as you can imagine, is rather uncomfortable. Rather than sit on the potty, they’ll want to get off it as soon as possible! Therefore, successful potty training rests on finding a potty that's high enough for your child.

Pro tip: give your little one something to do (like a shape sorter) to keep them on the seat for longer!

Look for Design Features Such as Splash Guards and High Back Rests to Make Potty Training Easier and More Comfortable

Look for Design Features Such as Splash Guards and High Back Rests to Make Potty Training Easier and More Comfortable

Potty training isn’t much fun - disposing of wees and poos has to come somewhere near the top of the list of why it can be unpleasant! Luckily, many potties are designed to reduce mess and make cleaning up much simpler. Look out for these features to make your life easier!

  • High splash guards: have an arch of plastic that sits around the front of your child’s potty that acts as a barricade for wee, preventing it from escaping and making a mess. They also encourage your child to sit back, reducing the tendency to lean forwards.

  • Removable inserts: are plastic trays that slot easily in and out of your child’s potty, making emptying much simpler.

  • Jazzy colours and animal patterns: make toilet training something fun for your child

  • Potties that flush and sing: after your child successfully "does their business" makes the experience a little more entertaining!

Select a Lightweight and Portable Travel Potty to Make Training on the Go Much Easier

Select a Lightweight and Portable Travel Potty to Make Training on the Go Much Easier

If your toddler is transitioning between nappies and using the toilet, it’s a good idea to choose a potty that you can take with you when you're out and about. Naturally, travel potties are designed to be as portable as possible to make parents' lives easier!

They’re usually lightweight and foldable, with handles that make them convenient to pick up and carry. One major advantage that many of them have over standard potties is that they are leakproof and able to contain their contents when folded, meaning the results of a toilet trip can be dealt with later if you’ve been caught short. This feature alone makes a travel potty well worth considering.

A Toilet-Time Throne With an Armchair Design and Removable Tray

The BabyBjörn Potty Chair is basically a toilet-time throne. Its armchair-style design has been much imitated, and it's easy to see why - the backrest and armrests make it comfortable for bigger kids, while the curved shape is sturdy and visually appealing

Best of all, the removable tray is highly convenient when it comes to cleaning up after your little one, and rubber feet mean no sliding around. The subdued colour scheme will suit most bathrooms too.

A Hygienic Alternative That Allows for Easy Pouring by Featuring a Handle and a Spout

It's not much fun emptying waste from a potty, particularly if it doesn't have a removable insert. One father-of-2 became so frustrated by the messy process that he designed this magnificent product: the Pourty! Featuring a handle at the front and a spout at the back, this award-winning design makes toilet time so much easier for parents.

All the yucky stuff goes out the back of the potty, rather than the front where children tend to place their hands, so we give this product top marks for hygiene. Anything that makes emptying a potty easier gets our seal of approval!

A Portable, Foldable Potty in 10 Colourful Designs That’s Completely Leek-Proof

At first glance, it's not even obvious that this is a potty - so it's sure to attract your little one's interest! "My Carry Potty" comes in 10 colourful designs, but our favourite is this charming ladybird one. It's so much fun to have around that we're certain your child will want to carry this potty themselves and will have no qualms using it.

Not only does this product look like a travel bag, but it folds up like one too - simply unclip and unfold when needed. Even better, the seal is completely leak-proof, meaning you can pack it up after use and dispose of the contents at a later time - extremely convenient when your child is caught short!

A Large Potty That Makes Training a Comfortable Experience With Its Elevated Seat and Backrest

The most striking feature of this potty is its huge size. It's not portable, but this potty isn't meant for travel - it's designed to make toilet time as comfortable as possible for your toddler. This is something the Strata Deluxe easily achieves thanks to its elevated seat and high backrest.

This product is also a joy for parents, you'll be pleased to hear! The removable tray with splash guard means mess is minimised, and emptying contents is simple, while the rubber feet prevent it from sliding across the bathroom floor. It's a real star in our eyes!

Potette Plus
Potette Plus Portable Potty and Toilet Trainer Seat

A Compact Seat That’s Perfectly Portable, Featuring Biodegradable Disposable Bags

The Potette Plus is one of the UK's best selling travel potties, and with good reason. It's foldable, making it extremely compact - it's small enough to fit in the bottom of a pushchair or even in a changing bag.

This product can be used anywhere as a standalone travel potty; you simply need to attach one of the biodegradable disposable bags. Or, if you're at home, it can be used as a trainer seat by clipping it onto the toilet. You'll need to factor in the price of the bags, but as far as portability is concerned, the Potette Plus is pretty fantastic!

A Singing Potty That Looks Like a Grown-up Toilet and Makes Flushing Noises

This is, quite literally, the all-singing, all-dancing potty! Okay, maybe it doesn't dance, but it will sing a little ditty and make flushing noises after every successful toilet trip. It also looks just like a grown-up toilet, complete with an extendable toilet roll holder.

While this potty is large and expensive, we love that it can be turned into a seat and snapped onto a regular toilet, making the transition much easier when the time comes. When you consider how happy your child will be to use this magical potty, we think the price is worth it too!

A Cute Design That’s Nice and High, Making It Perfect for Taller Children

The appeal of Fisher Price's potty is immediately apparent - if only grown-up toilets looked this fun! You can choose from several cute animal designs, including a penguin, a duck, and a unicorn, which all have the same features.

This potty is practical too - the seat is nice and high, meaning it's perfect for children with longer legs. Plus, the removable tray makes the disposal process a breeze. It's a little pricey, but we'd say it's worth splashing out on!

A Pepper Pig Inspired Design Featuring Backrests and Footrests, Making Potty Time Fun and Comfy

Sometimes it's their favourite character, more than any fancy features, that'll best persuade your child to sit on their potty. It's difficult to find a toddler who doesn't like Peppa Pig, so this product is a safe bet!

It's not just the aesthetic design that'll appeal to little ones, though, the high backrest and footrests at the front mean your little one will feel comfy while they sit. We only wish it had a few extra features for the price!

A Basic Potty That’s Affordable, Robust, and Features a High Backrest

Boots' Baby Potty might look pretty average, but it's highly rated among parents. It's a solid choice that's robust enough to endure a fair few knocks and bashes. This isn't the most exciting product on our list, but it's a good budget option.

A couple of features also give it an extra edge: the high backrest makes it comfortable for your child to sit in for extended periods, while the small "feet" will encourage them to sit up properly.

A No-Frills, Reliable, Inexpensive Option to Get the Job Done

Simple and affordable, the IKEA Lilla is a no-frills potty that works great as a spare for keeping at grandparents' houses or as a cheap method of trying out potty training before you splurge on a fancier alternative.

Those who prefer subtle shades will be disappointed to learn that the Lilla only comes in one colour - lime green! It also lacks extra features like padding or a removable insert. Still, this is a sturdy, reasonably priced potty that'll do the job adequately.

How to Potty Train

How to Potty Train

It can be tough to know how to start potty training, so below, we've written a few guidelines to get you going:

  • Keep the potty in the bathroom - if you have two bathrooms, keep one potty in each so that they're always within easy reach.
  • Make using the potty part of their everyday routine by going at specific parts of the day.
  • Encourage your child to sit on their potty after eating as digesting food might make them need to poop.
  • Pop a fun book or toys in the bathroom to make the experience more enjoyable and help them sit on the potty for longer.
  • Once you find out when their usual times to have a poo or pee are, start removing their nappy and taking them to the potty instead for those moments.
  • Make sure you don't make a fuss when they have accidents - it will happen! - you don't want to make them feel worried or anxious; you want to build confidence.
  • Of course, praise them lots when they do it right!

Frequently Asked Question

How Long Will Potty Training Take?

This will differ from child to child, depending on their development, your lifestyle and the method you use, but generally, it takes around 3-6 months to potty train. However, it takes much longer before you're completely in the clear of accidents!

If they do have an accident, don't worry, just pop them in the baby bath and try again later!
