We’ve come a long way in the last decade or so when it comes to road safety, and a lot of that is down to the quality of the modern-day dashboard camera. These nifty little guys not only record in super high definition in case of accidents or collisions, but they also monitor speed, track GPS, and some even have parking modes and night vision to watch your car while you’re not there.
The issue that arises then, is finding the right on-board camera for your needs. After all, the requirements of a taxi driver or fleet owner are different from those using one for personal purposes. In this guide, we'll tackle all the top features and functions you should be looking for, as well as sharing our reviews of the best front and rear dash cams to buy online from Amazon, Argos and eBay.

Table of Contents
The first thing to consider is the number of channels you want, which just means which parts of the car you want to record. Front, front and rear, front and interior, or all three. Of the options, the one that covers the most area is going to give you the best chance of capturing something, should it go wrong. Most don’t really require an interior channel unless they often travel with their children.
Our recommendation would be to opt for a dash cam that has at least a front and a rear camera, which is called a dual or two-channel camera. We say this because it provides the most comprehensive coverage of the entire vehicle.
Single-channel or front-facing models are a great way to get acquainted with the world of dash cams and are still capable of providing evidence, even if the impact occurred to the side or behind. They can do so by showing where you were at the time of the accident; just be aware that they can't provide visual evidence like a multiple channel camera can.

That said, there are cams out there that offer 2K or 4K resolution, which is crystal clear regardless of the weather. These are becoming more popular and offer videos that capture even the smallest details such as number plates, but as you would expect, they're generally a little more expensive.
Dashcams that have built-in GPS offer an additional tier of security. The system will automatically add the location(s) of where you've been, making it extremely easy for you to identify exactly where an incident took place. This can be particularly convenient if insurers or police are trying to link footage with other cameras in the area.
It is also a useful feature for those who own fleets of vehicles as you can keep track of exactly where everyone has been. Hopefully, your workers will be deterred from bobbing into town to run personal errands when they should be delivering their goods, packages, or customers!
Something very important is how and where you’re going to store your files. You can get around 4 hours of HD footage from a single 1080 p camera on a 32 GB SD card. What you need to remember is that if you’re recording in ultra-high definition, or using a dual or triple channel system, this is going to drop drastically. You can, however, look for models which have what is called a loop recording, whereby the camera will record over the old, unimportant footage which you likely don’t need.
The other option is to opt for a device with Wi-Fi connectivity. These models will see the recordings uploaded to the cloud, and from there, you’ll be able to access the footage on your smart device from a linked app. This is much easier and means you're less likely to lose important footage.
The final option is a device that uses both. These will often fill up the SD card first, then begin to transfer files to the cloud when this is full. Once emptied, the SD card can then be used again. One thing worth mentioning is the amount of storage on the card will be affected by the size of the SD card, so the bigger the better.

Finally, two modes that are worth double-checking for are night vision and parking mode. Not all accidents happen during daylight hours, so for the instances when they don't, you’ll want your camera to retain decent image quality. Luckily, pretty much any cam worth its salt will already have night vision.
The most common incident to happen to a car during the later hours is not when you’re driving, but when you’re parked and some shameless bandit tries to break in. Therefore, having a cam with parking mode which bursts into life when there is any movement around the car can be invaluable.

Providing both tremendous value for money and top-quality features can sometimes be a difficult balancing act. Luckily for us, Viofo felt up to that challenge and produced this top-of-the-line dual channel dash cam that provides all-around coverage, and more importantly, peace of mind.
Up front you have the clear-cut 4K vision that provides perfect clarity and detail when recording, regardless of the weather conditions. Then there's the night vision, motion detection park mode and automatic emergency recording which are all excellent. It might be a little bulkier than some options, but this is certainly made up for in functionality.
The only reason this cam isn't taking the number one spot is that it just captures front-facing video – if it wasn't for this, then it could quite easily be labelled the king of the road cams. The 622GW carries all that's good from the previous model (the 522GW) but adds a few cleverly-selected new features.
Our favourite of these is the inclusion of the What3words geolocation tracking system, which is capable of pinpointing the location of the car from up to 3 metres away. Furthermore, there is a fantastic polarising filter which reduces glare, and much-improved image stabilisation to ensure the captured video will always be easy to view.
Though Zenfold is another lesser-known brand, the T3 3CH offers many of the qualities that one would expect from a top-end product. And given that they provide not two but three channels (rear, front and interior), we think this constitutes an especially good deal.
Each camera films in a respectable quality, either 1080 p or 2K, as well as having all the other desired features such as GPS, night vision and parking mode. The workmanship doesn't feel as good as those you'd expect from the big hitters, but overall this is a very impressive bit of kit, and certainly a company to keep an eye on.
This little beauty is not only aesthetically pleasing thanks to its compact and discreet design, but it manages to pack a lot of tech in that tiny attractive shell. Alongside the high image quality and GPS, the device, once paired with the app, also has smartphone integration.
That's not all – there's also an abundance of different warnings which alert you to front and departure collisions, as well as speed cameras. The mount is easy and straightforward to use too, making removal and replacement a breeze.
Whilst not as renowned as some of the other brands in this ranking, Vanture provide top-quality goods for extremely reasonable prices. The N4 is a triple channel camera that films front, rear and cabin. The forward cam films in 2K and the rest in 1080 p. Moreover, there is a good motion sensor park mode and reliable night vision.
A neat difference between these cameras and the competition is that Vantrue has used a completely different battery to other manufacturers, and this allows the device to last considerably longer without requiring charging, which is handy because no-one likes all those wires across the windscreen.
Another great option if you're working on a tight budget, this front and rear dash cam from Osprey is a steal. Both cameras have a respectable 1080p image quality, as well as a good range of vision and what they call 'super night vision'. Sounds good to us!
The big difference between this and the other budget option is that you can utilise the cloud as well as onboard storage. Some buyers have found that has messed up their DAB radio though, so you might want to reconsider if you're partial to a bit of BBC Radio 6 on the way to work.
Nextbase is one of the standouts in this field, and the 522GW does all the basics you would expect from a dash cam. It has strong image quality, night mode, parking features, and versatile storage options, all of which work exceedingly well.
It also has some other impressive and potentially life-saving features, like the built-in Alexa, which means you can change music and make phone calls all without taking your eyes off the road. If that wasn't reassuring enough, then there's even an SOS alert which will notify the emergency services if there's an accident.
One of the top-selling products on Amazon, this dash cam has one major determinant that many of the other don't – it's super affordable. While there are some compromises, it still has plenty going for it, such as the decent image quality and reliable parking and night vision modes.
The concessions are that you'll be forced to use an SD card, though a 32 GB one does come included, and luckily the device uses loop recording. Also, there is no GPS function, so you won't be able to back up exactly where the event happened if you ever need to. That said, for the price we still think this is a great deal.
VANTRUE has created a camera that is ideal for taxi or rideshare drivers, as well as business owners who want to know what is going on in their vehicle. The front, rear and interior all operate at a pristine 4K, however, they do differ slightly in that the interior option runs at a slightly lower frame rate.
Other than this, the SD storage means the potential of excessive memory space, which again, is perfect for those who possibly command a fleet instead of driving themselves. The downside is that these are expensive, especially if you're forking out for several of them.
This is a slim, low-profile number from one of the world's leading dash cam brands, Thinkware. The design utilises 2K image resolution with a 140-degree field of view, meaning that it should capture a great amount of detail no matter the weather.
On top of that, the camera also has an award-winning night vision feature which is ideal for low light. The downside is that many people have encountered connectivity issues between the camera and the app, which is incredibly frustrating considering the price.
Dash cams are an easy way to prove who was at fault in an accident, and the possession of one demonstrates your confidence in your own driving. This is a great sign for insurance companies, as they know you will be extra diligent while on the road, so they may even offer you a cheaper quote!
In the UK, you can to use a dash cam with absolutely no legal repercussions. However, across Europe there are varying regulations around the use of dash cams. If you're travelling or residing in another European country, you will need to check with the regional authority on whether the use of a dash cam is permitted.
