How to Choose an Android Smartphone in the UK

When it comes to a smartphone, the amount of internal storage space available is usually related to the cost of the unit. Premium smartphones generally offer much more than cheaper options, but you shouldn't have too much difficulty finding one with either 64 GB or 128 GB of space on a budget phone.

Just like a computer, most smartphones feature both internal storage and the ability to add extra external storage via a microSD card. This is also a quick and easy way to transfer files between your phone and computer if you find your cloud storage space limited.

RAM and Processing Power Matter Depending On How You Use Your Phone

RAM and Processing Power Matter Depending On How You Use Your Phone

Random access memory (RAM) is how your phone deals with applications and internal systems that are being run. To put it simply, the more gigabytes of RAM a phone has, the quicker it will load apps and swap between them. A phone's memory is denoted as ram/internal storage, so a specification reading 4/128 means 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage space. It is recommended to have a minimum of 4 GM of RAM.

When it comes to processors, there are two things to look out for: clock speed and the number of cores. Clock speed is measured in Gigahertz (GHz) while the number of cores is denoted as singe-core, dual-core, quad-core, and so on.

While it can be confusing to understand, a smartphone with at least a dual-core 1.2 GHz processor will be fine for everyday tasks, while an octa-core 2.4 GHz model will be able to handle anything you throw at it.

20 MP or Higher Will Provide Quality Photography

20 MP or Higher Will Provide Quality Photography

One of the most popular features of smartphones is the cameras attached to them. Whether you're taking a selfie for Instagram, photographs for your business, or videoing your cat, you'll want to make sure that the image is the best it can be while also being quick to focus and record. Many Android smartphones will feature multiple high-quality lenses on both the front and rear.

A phone with a high number of lenses is a good indication that the camera features will be up to scratch, but you'll also want to make sure the camera has a high number of megapixels (MP) too. This determines the resolution of the videos and pictures, and, as always, the higher the number, the better.

4000 mAh or More: If You’re Out All Day The Battery Needs to Last

4000 mAh or More: If You’re Out All Day The Battery Needs to Last

All batteries are measured in milliamp-hours (mAh), and your phone is no different. If you spend a lot of time out and about, then a large 5000 mAh battery should last you multiple days on a single charge with moderate use. That said, phones with even half that capacity will serve you well if you're able to charge it most evenings.

We would recommend at least 4000 mAh if you watch a lot of videos or play mobile games, as using the screen continuously is the quickest way to use up your battery. If you spend the entirety of a 2-hour train journey watching Netflix on full brightness, then you can expect to see your percentage sitting just over half as you reach your destination.

Phone Size Can Inhibit Usability, Choose Wisely

Phone Size Can Inhibit Usability, Choose Wisely

As you're going to have your smartphone on you at all times, it's important that you opt for a handset that is comfortable to carry around. It should feel nice to hold in your hands as well as in your pocket.

Some of the larger Android smartphones on the market can be as long as 17 cm, while some smaller units are nearer 12 cm. The larger phones will also tend to feel a little weightier in your hands but will come with a larger, often higher resolution screen that is great for watching videos on YouTube and Netflix as well as playing games on the go.

Great in Every Way With A 120hz Super AMOLED Display

When it comes to choosing the best Android smartphone, it's important to weigh up the cost to quality ratio and, for that, the Galaxy A52 comes out on top. You won't feel any lag when swapping between apps, and the 120hz super AMOLED display is incredibly clear.

The whole thing has a premium feel that you expect from flagship devices while cutting the right corners to remain at a competitive price point. If you're looking for a great phone without breaking the bank, then the Galaxy A52 is the one for you.

Stock Android for a Smooth Operating Experience

It's hard not to overstate how well the Pixel 4a runs thanks to the inclusion of stock Android rather than one that has been tweaked to include apps and functions that you'll never use. This is probably the best user experience of any Android smartphone out there.

When you consider the price-point of the Pixel 4a and the smoothness of the operating system, it becomes a no-brainer if this is the upper limit of your budget. While the RAM and processing power isn't the highest on our list, thanks to the OS, the Pixel 4a is far more than the sum of its parts.

A Unique Powerhouse With a Tablet-Sized Screen

As phones have become progressively bigger over the past few years, they've strayed into tablet territory without being able to fully utilize the screen space of a full-sized tablet. That's until the Galaxy Z Flip3 came out, boasting its seriously impressive folding tablet-sized screen with the included stylus.

Thanks to its front-facing screen, you can also use the Flip3 as a traditional smartphone, swapping seamlessly back and forth as you open and close the unit. It may be expensive, but you're essentially getting a high powered phone and tablet in one.

Cute and Compact With a Unique Design

The next two entries on our list feature some truly inspirational designs from Samsung, the first being the Galaxy Z Flip3. This ingenious model folds in half to easily fit into any pocket or bag without any compromises.

You can use the phone for video calls and selfies without even needing to unfold it, and you can even stand it at a 90-degree angle without any hassle. You can even check messages and play music while it's neatly folded up!

108 MP Camera With Crystal Clear OLED

The Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra seems to divide the masses, but we think it's one of the most unique options out there. The OLED screen offers a crystal clear, high definition image, and the included S pen stylus is great for work purposes.

The Note20 Ultra also features the best camera of any Android smartphone - full stop! If you're planning on taking a lot of photos and videos, you can't find a better phone, and if the stylus appeals to you, then this is the only stylus handset worth considering.

Incredible Processing Power and 12 GB of RAM

Oneplus has been making strides in the premium smartphone market in the last few years, offering incredible processing power and RAM but lacking in the camera department. The 9 Pro has rectified that, featuring a great 48 MP rear camera.

While the phone is something of a powerhouse, there are question marks over the OxygenOS. Users may find the operating system a little frustrating as it differs substantially from a stock Android experience.

256 GB Storage and A 64 MP Camera

When it comes to Android smartphones, Samsung has become the go-to brand over the last decade as they make some of the best phones on the market. Their Galaxy series is their flagship brand, and the S21 is a solid entry into that series.

Combining great specifications and a sleek design, the S21 is something of a litmus test when it comes to premium Android smartphones. You won't be disappointed with this option, but it feels very vanilla compared to other premium phones.

A Slightly Older Yet Fantastic Phone From Huawei With 40 MP

Initially released back in 2019, this offering from Huawei is still a fantastic phone in 2021. It may sound counterintuitive, but getting your hands on an older Huawei phone is actually beneficial as the newer models don't come with the Google Play store.

For the price, the P30 Pro offers some excellent specifications, boasting a great processor as well as an impressive front-facing camera. While the Android OS is still being updated, as this is an older phone, it's not the most future-proof on our list.
