How to Choose a Nipple Cream for Breastfeeding in the UK

Key Points to Consider
  1. To Sooth and Relieve Pain Seek Out Lanolin and Coconut Oil
  2. Not All Ingredients Are Safe for Babies: Avoid Artificial Perfumes and Parabens
  3. Check Whether Before Breastfeeding You Must Remove Creams With Numbing Ingredients

Seek Out Key Ingredients Like Lanolin and Coconut Oil to Soothe Cracked, Dry Skin and Relieve Pain

Seek Out Key Ingredients Like Lanolin and Coconut Oil to Soothe Cracked, Dry Skin and Relieve Pain

Choose a Lanolin Balm to Heal Skin Irritation and Cracked, Bleeding Nipples

Lanolin is the most common ingredient found in nipple creams for breastfeeding. It is an emollient that softens and soothes the skin. Also known as 'wool wax', lanolin is a naturally-excreted waxy conditioner found in the wool of sheep. Lanolin has long been used to treat itchy and irritated skin and bleeding nipples. This ingredient is safe for both mother and child and can be used on skin that is either intact or cracked.

While lanolin creams are safe and non-toxic for your child and there's no need to wipe them off before breastfeeding, it's best to apply them 10 to 15 minutes before you nurse, so as to give the cream time to absorb into your skin. Thus it is preferable  to pick one that absorbs quickly, leaving only minute residue on the surface.

Also, if you decide you'd like to pump your milk instead (or you want to do a bit of both), the breast can be lubricated with lanolin before you begin, which will pre-soothe the skin, lubricate it and make the pumping process more comfortable

If nappy rash is an issue too, try these recommended nappy rash creams.

For Those Who Prefer Plant-Based Creams, Look for Anti-inflammatory and Antibacterial Ingredients Such as Calendula Oil and Olive Oil

For those who would prefer a nipple cream free of animal by-products, then look for creams labelled as Vegan; such creams avoid sheep-derived lanolin and also avoid beeswax. Some of the vegan-friendly ingredients used instead include coconut oil, shea butter, calendula oil, aloe vera and olive oil, all of which are rich in vitamins and minerals and offer a range of benefits.

Thanks to its richness in nourishing fatty acids and vitamin E, coconut oil penetrates the nipples to nourish and smooth. Calendula oil, on the other hand, has anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties which help to heal and relieve soreness.

Other ingredients like shea butter, aloe vera and olive oil prevent cracked nipples, reduce symptoms of irritation and also inhibit oxidation to protect from damage. Moreover, they have occlusive abilities which prevent moisture loss, ensuring that your nipples remain well hydrated.

Not All Ingredients Are Safe for Babies: Avoid Creams With Artificial Perfumes and Parabens

Not All Ingredients Are Safe for Babies: Avoid Creams With Artificial Perfumes and Parabens

Always pay attention to the active and inactive ingredients listed on the label to be sure of what has gone into your product. Some ingredients can be harsh on the skin and are not always safe for consumption by babies. These include synthetic fragrances listed as perfume, fragrance oil or parfum, all of which are a no-no for your baby

You may want to avoid ingredients like parabens and artificial preservatives. Be mindful that certain ingredients that may be safe for you are not safe for the child, and should be removed before latching-on baby, or avoided entirely if there's any chance they'll come into contact with them.

Take a look at our paediatrician-approved baby shampoos while you're here.

3

Remove Creams With Numbing Ingredients Such as Lidocaine, Benzocaine and Prilocaine Before Breastfeeding

Remove Creams With Numbing Ingredients Such as Lidocaine, Benzocaine and Prilocaine Before Breastfeeding

Some creams may include numbing ingredients such as lidocaine, benzocaine and prilocaine – generally, ingredients ending with "-caine". These numbing agents, sometimes also regarded as anaesthetics, are not seen as suitable to be used in nipple creams for breastfeeding.

While anaesthetics may reduce the pain you feel, they also adversely impact the child. As the lips of your baby comes into contact with the numbing cream, his or her sucking ability is significantly weakened, and the taste buds affected, too. This leaves your child hungry but unable to feed!

It is important to note that these creams do not actually bring about any healing to your sore nipples, they just lessen the pain for a short while. Only a couple of hours later, the numb feeling will begin to fade away and the pain will return!

Hypoallergenic, Multi-Functional Nipple Cream for Breastfeeding

Lansinoh Lanolin Nipple Cream has remained a household name and the favourite of mums across the UK for good reason – it is the only lanolin cream to be awarded the British Allergy Foundation Seal of Approval!

This cream is 100% hypoallergenic and 100% natural with no added water, resulting in high-quality, pure lanolin. Lanolin-Free Herbal Healing Balm That Absorbs Quickly

This balm goes one step further for mums who want a fully-natural, lanolin-free option. The herbal healing balm is made from a selection of unique plant oils and is free from wool derivatives, making it perfect for those who react to wool. The plant oils work to replenish natural oils lost during breastfeeding.

It has a smooth, non-sticky consistency that gets working immediately after it's applied, to bring you that much needed relief. The thin consistency makes it easy to apply and it absorbs quickly, so you don't need to painfully work it into your sore nipples, as is the case with the thicker balms.

Protective Nipple Balm Developed by Midwives

This highly-rated product was developed by midwives and uses only premium ingredients – medical-grade lanolin, coconut oil, and sweet almond oil. It is tasteless and has a completely neutral smell, which would suit babies who are usually put off by creams.

The container has an easy pump that dispenses just the right amount needed, and it's designed in such a way that you can dispense it from any given angle, whether upside down or sideways. The pump also allows you to easily apply it single-handedly, so while holding your baby. Very clever!

Baby-Safe Cream for Repairing Damaged Nipples

A major component of this product is avocado oil, which, being a food-grade ingredient also used for cooking, makes the cream safer for ingestion by your baby. Avocado oil is loaded with omega-3 fatty acids as well as other vitamins which work incredibly well to nourish the nipples.

And there's more – the nutrients in avocado help to grow new skin, thereby repairing your damaged nipples for a better breastfeeding experience. The price of this cream is quite reasonable too, considering it is only made with three high-quality natural ingredients.

Vegan Balm for Comfort and Relief

Next up, a product for vegan mamas and babies or those who are sensitive to lanolin or allergic to wool. It's free of the common lanolin ingredient and instead contains a vegetable-based substitute, which allows for comforting relief from dry, sensitive nipples.

Having used this, 95% of mothers agreed that nipples felt instantly soothed and relieved! Better yet, with a volume of only 30 ml, its compact tube is easy to throw in a bag and have on hand when you need it.

Shea Butter Cream for Dry Nipples With a Natural Scent

So there's a difference between added synthetic fragrances and the natural scent of an organic product. A major ingredient used in the Motherlove Nipple Cream is shea butter, which gives off a natural nutty scent that keeps you confident you're using a pure product!

Shea butter, obtained from shea trees native to West Africa, is safe for all skin types and does not leave your skin oily after application as it absorbs very quickly. The scent does not linger on after application, though, so you don't need to worry about it interfering with the natural scent of your body and potentially disturbing your baby.

A Scent-Free Balm for Instant Relief

Here's another wonderful product that is completely lanolin-free! It contains palm oil and beeswax, among other ingredients, so although it is not vegan-friendly, it is less likely to cause reactions than lanolin-based creams. The protective beeswax locks in moisture without clogging pores.

The plastic container means that it is lightweight, flexible and easy to get out when your hands are full. However, because the product is contained in a jar rather than a tube there is a chance of contamination in the course of use, making the packaging method a little unhygienic.

Scent-Fee Nipple Cream With Protective Beeswax

This product combines animal-based and plant-based ingredients in one – lanolin and beeswax sit alongside olive oil, sunflower seed oil, calendula extract and more. The active calendula compound is antiseptic and antibacterial, making the balm great for repairing damaged skin tissue.

The distilled oils and extracts are also high in antioxidants, which treat sore nipples and cracked skin whilst fighting against the free radicals that cause ageing. On the downside, despite the the formula being completely natural, some mums have reported an odd chemical-type smell that takes some getting used to.

Soothing Cream Made With Organic Ingredients

This Organic Mommy Balm is great for healing chapped, irritated and sensitive skin as well as treating inflammation and pain. The ointment is made with nutrient-rich, non-toxic ingredients including calendula oil, beeswax, cocoa butter, sunflower oil, apricot oil, evening primrose oil and chamomile extract.

This super-blend works together to nourish and soothe the nipple and surrounding areola. It also works to protect the skin from the friction that results in chafing. However, you might find that the balm needs working in well, as its consistency is a little lumpy.

Moisturise and Replenish Oils With 100% Lanolin

This nipple cream consists of 100% pure and natural medical-grade wool wax (lanolin). Since your baby's sucking on your nipples constantly depletes it of moisture and its natural oils, this works to restore the skin’s natural moisture balance.

As these oils are replenished, cracking, dryness and soreness are avoided. It is an effective moisturiser that keeps your nipples supple and soft. On the downside, it takes a little effort to get it out of the tube and it's likely to leave yellow stain marks on your breast pads and the inside of your bra.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Breastfeed After Applying Nipple Cream?

Yes, if you select an approved nipple cream with food-grade ingredients (like those recommended here). If your nipple cream contains numbing ingredients (generally, ingredients ending with "-caine") then wipe them off before breastfeeding or expressing. They can cause real problems with latching- on and only mask the nipple irritation temporarily.

How Often Should I Apply Nipple Cream?

Try to apply approved nipple cream 10-15 minutes before feeding (so the cream has time to sink in and start working). This will lubricate the chafed areola and reduce the friction-burn feeling during the feed. After the feed, just keep applying the cream whenever it seems that your overworked nipples need help!
