How to Choose a Laundry Basket in the UK

Key Points to Consider
  1. Choose the Best Material for Your Lifestyle
  2. Consider a 50 - 70L Capacity on Whether it's Just for Yourself or Your Whole Family
  3. Pick a Double Basket With Compartments to Save on Sorting Time
  4. Opt for a Basket With Lid to Keep Undesirable Odours at Bay
  5. Go for a Basket With Handles to Ease Carrying It Around

Pick the Right Material for Your Needs: Traditional Wicker Baskets Have Better Longevity, Fabric Hampers Can Be Folded Down

Pick the Right Material for Your Needs: Traditional Wicker Baskets Have Better Longevity, Fabric Hampers Can Be Folded Down
  • Plastic: Whilst not the most attractive of materials, plastic is great if you want a cheap and light option. It is incredibly simple to clean them up if they get a bit dirty and they won't absorb any moisture from sweaty clothes. They do, however, run the risk of breaking particularly if a more brittle plastic is used.

  • Metal: Less common than the other options, but has plenty of advantages. They're sturdy and, like plastic, they're easy to clean. Whilst other laundry baskets aren't as suited to the moisture, metal baskets can be stored in bathrooms without a problem. Metal is heavier though, and harder to manoeuvre. They also don't tend to have the ability to fold away like some other softer materials do.

  • Fabric: Baskets made of fabric are light and easy to move around thanks to their malleability and foldability, which makes them a good choice for anyone with limited space. In addition to this, they're much cheaper than the metal alternatives on the market. The main drawback for this sort of laundry basket is that fabric does run the risk of absorbing some of the odours and moisture from your dirty clothes.

  • Natural wood and plant materials: Woven into a wicker design to make baskets, this method creates a lasting product with a more natural look and feel than metal, plastic and fabric. Popular materials for this style of basket are rattan and reed, which are strong and solid. Whilst its sturdiness may appeal, these baskets aren't usually foldable and can be more difficult to move around once piled up.

A 50 Litre Capacity Is Sufficient for One Person, but Choose 70 Litres or Above for Larger Households

A 50 Litre Capacity Is Sufficient for One Person, but Choose 70 Litres or Above for Larger Households

Capacity for laundry baskets is measure in litres or, if not, you can work out the rough capacity from the dimensions. If you have a large household, look at larger capacities of 70 litres and above to avoid overflows. It is also important to consider the dimensions of a basket, and not just because of the capacity.

You probably don't want to have your laundry as the centre of attention in a room, so make sure the basket can fit into a space where it won't intrude. Make sure you know the dimensions of the space you have in mind for the laundry basket and have considered how many loads you typically do a week.

Opt For a Double Basket With Separate Compartments to Save Time Separating Your Laundry

Opt For a Double Basket With Separate Compartments to Save Time Separating Your Laundry

As well as having enough space to store everything, you might want to go one step further and have a laundry basket that contains a few different compartments within it. This will save you time down the line as you can pre-separate your lights, darks and your colours or whichever system you choose to go for. These baskets are often larger, though, so make sure you have enough space to store them.

Alternatively, you can have separate laundry baskets. A family of four may choose to have a laundry basket in every bedroom to keep clothes organised, and darks and whites separate, while smaller households may only require one. Some people may also choose to have a laundry basket for clothes and another for towels and bed linen.

4

Choose a Laundry Basket With a Lid to Keep Smells In

Choose a Laundry Basket With a Lid to Keep Smells In

One problem with finding somewhere to store dirty clothing until you're ready to put a wash on is by covering up the sight and smells; having dirty washing strewn all over the place is not a good look. The best way to sort out both of these issues is finding a laundry basket that has a lid. This will not only make your room look much neater but it will also stop the aromas coming off your smelly socks in their tracks!

5

Look For a Laundry Basket With Handles to Help You Carry It to Your Washing Machine

Look For a Laundry Basket With Handles to Help You Carry It to Your Washing Machine

Once your laundry basket is full, it can be a challenge emptying it all out and taking it to the washing machine. To make this process as smooth as possible, go for a design with handles so you can carry your basket around. This means you can take your basket from your room or bathroom straight to the washing machine or out to your washing line without losing any stray socks along the way.

If anyone in your household experiences frequent skin irritations, it may be time to switch to a laundry detergent for sensitive skin.

A Foldable Laundry Basket With Two Compartments and Lid

This laundry basket ticks all the boxes. It has two compartments for sorting your darks and lights, but it doesn't stop there. The two compartments each have their own lid, which fully conceal the basket's contents and are easy to open and close.

The material it's made from might be fabric, but its inside is waterproof so you don't have to worry about cleaning, staining or lingering smells. Finally, it is fully foldable, so if you're not using it or moving your basket from room to room it can be stored anywhere.

Keep Dirty Laundry Out of Sight With This Colourful Canvas Hamper

Here's another brightly-coloured option if you're looking for a laundry basket with a bit of character! This cheap-and-cheerful choice is just what you need if you want something that quickly becomes a feature of any room it's in, but also one that you can move and fold away if needed

The attached lid clasps shut, ensuring you can keep dirty laundry out of sight, and the pink rope handles will allow you to pick up this light-yet-sturdy canvas basket with ease. If you like this basket a lot, go ahead and get a few as they can also store other things besides laundry.

Metal Bin for Separating Your Laundry

This laundry 'bin' doesn't look at all like a traditional basket, and that might be just what you're looking for. The stylish metal finish means that it would look really good in a house with a modern feel

It is more than just style, though, that elevates this bin. The two holes – which make it easy to separate your washing – drop into two sections of a lining bag. This means that, although the bin itself is hard to move, you can take out the fabric lining with your clothes in and move it wherever.

Drawstring Basket With Waterproof Liner

The striking yellow of this fun design is definitely eye-catching, but this laundry basket has far more going for it than just colour. With its waterproof liner, it avoids the problem of fabric absorbing moisture and makes cleaning it less of a hassle.

The drawstring top is a quick way of stopping at least some of the odours escaping and keeping them in their place without adding any of the bulk that a lid can sometimes do. Built-in handles also mean moving from A to B is no trouble

A Simple and Functional Way of Separating Your Colours

No more will you have to find that a pesky red sock has stained all of your white clothes. With this sorter, you'll know exactly where to put all of your items. It lets you sort your clothing into colours, darks, and whites as you wear them, so there's no need to go through the stinky pile to sort them again.

It is not the most solid option and it does take up a bit of space, but the clear signage, as well as the bright colours, make this a great option for kids or a functional utility room. This is all topped off with its incredibly low price.

Traditional Laundry Basket Made From 100% Cotton

This basket's nude tones and soft shape mean it will fit into most rooms without looking obtrusive. The tassels add some interest without being tacky and the two big handles on the top will make taking this basket around the house a breeze.

This basket is made from 100% cotton which gives a natural look, but also means it won't be great at coping with damp or smelly clothes. It also doesn't have a lid, so you won't be able to conceal the clothes from view once they've piled up.

A Versatile 57 Litre Landry Hamper for Bedrooms

This basket is simple in colour and design, and a good option if you're after a tall basket to fit in a narrow space. With two handles, it is possible to move it from room to room and the lid allows you to keep your dirty laundry hidden away

The woven plastic material might not be as appealing as other rattan options with a similar design, though. And, although it does have handles, it doesn't compress or fold down – which could make it quite bulky and hard to handle for those with lots of stairs to cart it down.

An Eco-Friendly 85 Litre Wicker Laundry Basket

If the environment is an important consideration when making purchases, this timeless basket could be the one for you. This white wicker basket not only looks nice, but it's made from eco-friendly, sustainable natural materials. There is plenty of space to fit all of your stuff in its huge 85 litres capacity, too.

This laundry hamper also comes with an attached lid to keep any unwanted smells contained. Unfortunately, it doesn't have any handles to help you move this large basket and – without compartments -– you will end up rifling through your laundry to find the things you want to wash.
