Hannah's Top 9 Vegan Ice-Creams

Hannah's Top 9 Vegan Ice-Creams

'When I stopped eating dairy ice cream was the one thing that I missed the most, thankfully loads of companies both artisan and big brands have started to develop delicious vegan alternatives.

There are a few key things I look for when choosing an ice cream, flavour, creaminess/ texture, consistency of each scoop or bite, packaging and then cost. However, I am always willing to pay a little more for quality, well-sourced ingredients and sustainable packaging. Here are my Top 10 Vegan Ice Creams for when you want to enjoy a sunny afternoon snack or an accompaniment to a dessert!'

Thanks to Hannah of @herbivorehan_, we have a whole list of the best vegan ice creams currently available in the UK. From Halo Top to Vegan Magnum, we are here to tell you which vegan ice creams are the best, trust us. All of Han's choices are available to buy from online retailers such as Waitrose, Morrisons and Tesco.

Vegan Salted Caramel & Almond Swirl

    Hannah Layland

When I tried this I was sceptical about the claims that it could be scooped straight from the freezer, but it's true. Even though it has a coconut base, the taste of caramel and almond act as a strong and delicious base - I cannot taste any coconut.

Often salted caramel or swirl ice creams are overhyped and don't deliver, but the crunch of the almonds and delicate swirl is equal through the whole tub so every bite is perfect. It's completely palm oil free, which is something I always look out for and the packaging is completely recyclable. there is nothing not to love!
  • Roar
Coconut Mango Passion Fruit Oat Cookie Ice Cream

    Hannah Layland

Not only is this mango ice cream delicious, but ROAR donates a percentage of their profits to help to increase the global tiger population.

So it tastes great and you're doing a great thing! The flavours of Mango and Passionfruit really shine through this ice cream and the coconut flakes along with the coconut base are subtle but really add to the tropical taste. The oat cookie clusters are by far the best crunchy addition to any ice cream I have tried. The texture is slightly heavier than other vegan ice creams but much creamier.
  • Magnum
    Vegan Almond Ice Cream

    Hannah Layland

The ideal mess free ice cream. Who doesn't love vanilla ice cream coated in chunky almond chocolate on a stick? As with all magnums, after that first heavenly the race to eat the chocolate coating before it falls off is on, but that is not unique to the vegan version of this household favourite.

There is nothing distinctively different between this version and its dairy counterpart, so if you were looking to switch to dairy free this would be the perfect way without noticing a change. There are 2 other vegan flavours of magnum readily available, salted caramel and classic, but I think the almond cover sets this flavour above the others. Sadly, the individual plastic wrapping can't be recycled, but the box most definitely can!
  • Hackney Gelato
    Dark Chocolate Sorbetto

    Hannah Layland

If you are chocolate mad, then you will not find a more intense, rich vegan chocolate dessert than this. It's fairly pricey, but the quality and taste make it so worth it. Hackney Gelato only make artisan, small batch gelatos and sorbets and the owners grew up in Italy. Each trained in the art of gelato in Sicily and you can really tell.

A classic gelato is much lighter than standard ice cream, and somehow this sorbet matches that lightness. To get the full experience of this I would absolutely suggest that it is best served by its self, perhaps with a few crushed pistachios.
  • Swedish Glace
    Raspberry

    Hannah Layland

This flavour takes me back to the early 2000s and I love it. I don't think you can o wrong with such classic flavours, the raspberry isn't artificial sweet like some fruity ice creams are. It's sweet but has the right amount of tartness to cut through the soft creamy ice cream.

It's perfect in a waffle cone, or in a bowl with more strawberries. The size of the tub is bigger than most vegan ice creams meaning it's perfect for sharing with family or friends, it would make the perfect last minute dessert for a group. The consistency in flavour and swirl in every scoop along with the light creamy texture makes it a perfect choice for any occasion.
  • Cecily's
Vanilla and Dark Choc Lovely Little Bites

    Hannah Layland

Dragon's Den loves Cecily's (previously Coconuts Organic) so it must be good, and they were right to back this lovely cornish company. All flavours of Cecily's I have tried are beautiful, but these little bits top the table for me. They're like having a bite sized choc ice.

The ice cream is sweet and creamy with a deep vanilla flavour, which in its self would be a perfect vanilla tub, but what really makes a difference is the dark chocolate coating cutting that sweetness without being too bitter. Each bite is perfect. As one of the most expensive ice creams I have tried, at almost £6 per tub, they are definitely a treat rather than an everyday freezer essential.
  • Halo Top
    Plant-Based Caramel Chocolate Pretzel

    Hannah Layland

There isn't one flavour of Halo Top I haven't liked. In the UK their range is much smaller than elsewhere, but they've picked the best to have. Even though these pots are low in calories, the flavours and texture are still of high quality and great taste. It's light and scoopable (if you wanted to share).

The pretzels add a great crunch and a slight saltiness to the creamy caramel, sometimes with ice creams with chunks, there aren't enough of them. Halo Top have nailed the number of pretzel chunks and the quantity of caramel swirl goes throughout the whole tub. I wouldn't blame anyone for finishing it all in one sitting.
  • Cornetto
Vanilla Gluten Free Soy Ice Cream Cone

    Hannah Layland

It's not easy to find a gluten free ice cream cone, let alone one that is crispy, but you will not be disappointed with the crunch this cone offers. Like all Cornettos It has the classic chocolate tip and chocolate coating around the cone.

The vanilla ice cream in this cone is much lighter and creamier than other vegan vanillas found in tubs, almost like a soft serve. The fact that the box is made up of fully recyclable packaging is another key selling point for me. Each pack comes with 4 cones... meaning you could share them... if you wanted to.
  • Little Moons
Vegan Tropical Passionfruit and Mango Mochi Ice Cream

    Hannah Layland

These aren't exactly ice cream, but they're so smooth you'd be fooled. If you have ever had a fruit cooler at a coffee shop and loved it, then these are the perfect little treats for you. I love that there isn't any messing about with scooping with these, you just open the pack and they're readily portioned for you.

The texture of the ice cream itself is slightly more dense than traditional ice cream, but this could be down to the way they are encased in the rice dough. As the mochi warms to room temperature the dough encasing the ice cream changes texture to become more sticky like a chewy sweet but the ice cream softens to become much creamier than the first bite. If you aren't a fan of chewy sweets then I would probably give these a miss.
