Why Consider an Aluminium-Free Deodorant?

Why Consider an Aluminium-Free Deodorant?
Why is aluminium now being banished to the beauty netherworld? The most prominent reason is its link to breast cancer and other health concerns. However, no proven research actually exists to suggest that any harm is caused after using aluminium products on our skin, or that it may lead to the formation of cancerous cells.

Secondly, in light of the current shift toward natural beauty products we now like to know exactly what we are putting onto our skin and into our environment. There is also concern over whether it is healthy to block the sweat glands and prevent the body’s natural processes (which are designed to cool us down) from occurring.

How to Choose an Aluminium-Free Deodorant in the UK

Key Points to Consider

  1. Choose a Natural Aluminium-Free Deodorant if Your Skin Is Sensitive
  2. Select an Application Style That's Convenient and Easy to Use
  3. If You Prefer Something Gentler, Leave Out the Alcohol
1

Choose a Natural Aluminium-Free Deodorant if Your Skin Is Sensitive, but Chemical Ones May Be More Effective

Choose a Natural Aluminium-Free Deodorant if Your Skin Is Sensitive, but Chemical Ones May Be More Effective
After a deodorant has had its aluminium taken out, it’s going to need something else with sweat-reducing properties to replace it. Depending on whether the formula is chemical-based or natural, it could either be another chemical, or a plant-powered alternative such as absorbent kaolin clay, pore-tightening coriander or mineral salts in the form of a crystal stick.

Whether you’d rather go with a chemical deodorant (perhaps the brand you like has their own aluminium-free version!) or a naturally-formulated product is up to you – and may be a preference you already have when it comes to your toiletries.

Natural products have the advantage of being more environmentally friendly and less irritating to sensitive skin, and chemical deodorants are often touted as more effective when it comes to combating heavy perspiration, so weigh up their qualities before you decide.

Keep your hands healthy with a chemical-free natural soap bar!

Sprays, Roll-Ons, Creams or Powders - Select an Application Style That's Convenient and Easy to Use

Sprays, Roll-Ons, Creams or Powders - Select an Application Style That's Convenient and Easy to Use

Get a Spray or Roll-On if You Want to Use a More Familiar Application Method

Fancy keeping it traditional? Aerosol sprays are convenient and quick and are usually faster drying than roll-ons with the added benefit of not leaving marks on clothing. Roll-ons or sticks are more compact and suited to taking on the go, while also being better for the environment, but can leave sticky marks on your tops.

Pump-action sprays applied via a spritzer will appease those who aren’t keen on aerosols, won’t leave white marks, and are often easier to recycle or reuse. The downside is they're a little more fiddly and less convenient, but have great environmental credentials.

Opt For Powders and Creams if You Prefer a Stronger and More Eco-Friendly Container

Creams and powders may seem a little unusual if you haven’t tried them before, but they too have their draws. Powders can be a tad messy but are very absorbent – a savvy choice for active folks concerned that a deodorant sans aluminium won’t keep sweat at bay. You can also pat them on your feet and chest as well as your armpits.

Plus, if you’re cutting down on plastics you’ll also appreciate the fact these newer innovations are commonly housed in eco-friendly glass jars and you won't have to worry about the environmental impact of any aerosol sprays!

If you're avoiding plastics, consider switching to a shampoo bar!

3

If You Prefer Something Gentler, Leave Out the Alcohol for Post-Shaving Comfort and Less Irritation on Sensitive Skin

If You Prefer Something Gentler, Leave Out the Alcohol for Post-Shaving Comfort and Less Irritation on Sensitive Skin
Besides aluminium, there’s another chemical you might also want to leave out if you’re looking for a kinder deodorant: alcohol. It’s added to most deodorants to kill off the bacteria that forms when we sweat (which is actually what causes body odour whiffs – our sweat itself is odourless), but not all of us get along with it.

Deodorants containing alcohol can irritate and dry out sensitive skin, and if you shave or wax your pits you’ll know only too well how applying a harsh deodorant post-shave can smart like nothing else! Not all products will explicitly state whether they are alcohol-free, so check the ingredients and skip the alcohol or ethanol if you prefer something gentler.

If you're worried about dry skin, consider using a natural hand cream!

A Naturally-Powerful Sweat Blocker That Really Works

Our top spot has been awarded to Dr. Hauschka’s natural-yet-mighty roll-on, which harnesses the powers of sage, mint, witch hazel and tapioca starch to tighten up the pores and keep bacteria from forming without the need for any chemical additives.

Easily absorbed and gentle on any skin type, the formula is also vegan and won’t sting or leave an unwelcome residue, even though it contains some antibacterial alcohol. The herb-fresh scent is practically perfume-worthy and really shows the quality of the ingredients, as does the fact it does exactly what it says on the bottle!

Gentle Freshness With Japanese Sea Minerals

Free from parabens as well as aluminium and hypoallergenic, this aerosol ticks all the boxes for an antiperspirant suitable for sensitive skin. Considering it is packed with natural ingredients, its drugstore price tag is appealing, too.

Its formula has a soapy, musky scent and fights sweat using Japanese sea minerals, plus it's quick-drying and doesn't flake. There's a roll-on version too if you'd prefer something more compact. This 24-hour dermo protective deodorant performs well and has plenty of rave reviews to back it up!

A Great Antiperspirant Substitute Anyone Can Use

This natural stick deodorant is on every blogger's must-have aluminium-free list, and not just because of the beautiful gender-neutral scent that’s soothing on pits whether shaved, waxed or natural. It is quick to absorb and non-greasy leaving no residue or white marks and has effective antiperspirant properties.

We’re fans of the compact size that’ll tuck nicely into your suitcase or gym bag and the fact it has zero alcohol or parabens and is vegan and cruelty-free. Other scents in the range include rose and vanilla, cedarwood and juniper, and it's also available as a roll-on!

The Back-to-Basics Crystal Stick for Sensitive Skin

Completely fragrance-free and designed with sensitive skin in mind, PitROK’s crystal stick is formed from pure mineral salts. Though it does contain the mineral ammonium alum, this is not the aluminium we are wishing to avoid as it is a different compound and far too large to be absorbed into the skin.

It’s a very retro natural deodorant application, but the reason it’s still a bestseller is because it really does work! Also suitable for the feet or anywhere else you fancy swiping it, this stick will leave you feeling cool and clean for most of the day. A great pick for those who prefer to let their perfume, or their natural pheromones, do the talking.

Totally Natural With a Non-Aerosol Spray

Rumour has it this is Emma Watson’s regular deodorant, and we can see why. A great eco alternative to harsher aerosols, Weleda’s recyclable glass spray deodorant is 100% natural and gives long-lasting protection (up to 12 hours, according to the packaging) without disrupting the body’s natural processes.

The sage scent is pleasantly earthy and would appeal to most noses, or alternatively, check out the citrus and rose varieties for something a little fresher. Unfortunately, it’s not alcohol-free, but it is phthalate-free, cruelty-free and vegan.

A Vegan, Cruelty-Free Eco-Pick in Plastic-Free Packaging

A long-lasting balm contained in plastic-free, reusable and recyclable glass, this is a pick for the eco-conscious. It’s also vegan, cruelty-free, and UK-made, with a whole host of powerful plant extracts to zap bacteria, defend against odour and nourish the skin, including charcoal. Very sensitive skin types are warned against the bicarb addition, though.

Those who prefer to let their perfume or cologne take centre stage will appreciate the almost undetectable scent, even with all the lovely essential oils in its makeup! We think this is a bargain for a totally natural deodorant too, with plenty of reviewers singing its praises and vouching for its effectiveness.

A Fresh-Scented Spray From a Reliable Brand

Most people have bought a Dove deodorant at some point in their life, but did you know they have an aluminium-free range? The green tea and cucumber scent is as crisp and zingy as it sounds, and this one claims to keep you fresh and dry for 24 hours.

We’d recommend it for sensitive-skinned folks and those not quite ready to step out of their comfort zone and into natural deodorants. Plus, as a bonus, it contains vitamin B3 and added moisturisers to soothe shaving irritation. Unfortunately how effectively it keeps odours at bay varies widely from user to user, but we think it's worth a try.

The Natural Stick Most Similar to a Traditional Deodorant

If you’re wanting to ditch the aluminium and head over to the natural side of beauty but are feeling a bit sceptical, Native’s range is worth a try. Their solid stick designs feel and apply just like a “normal” deodorant, but with much more appealing scent choices like this springy cucumber and mint.

In terms of its antiperspirant properties, there’s milk of magnesia, bicarb and tapioca starch to absorb moisture and reduce whiffs, and coconut oil and shea butter to soften you up post-shave. On top of all that, Native cleverly add probiotics to balance out bacteria levels and keep you fresh. The only downside is the price!

A Sweat-Stopping Treat for Your Underarms

Still taking the beauty world by storm, this effective deodorant shuns the pore-blocking aluminium for absorbent kaolin clay and arrowroot, alongside moisturising shea butter and antiseptic peppermint. It’s applied as a cream but magically turns into a soft, subtle powder that keeps you dry even after exercise.

We can’t fault the chic packaging, and it is a real treat scent and quality-wise, but the price does make it a tad inaccessible for everyday use. There is also bicarbonate of soda in the ingredients which some may find irritating.

Gentle Herbal Spray Best for Light Perspiration

A cooling and soothing pump-action spray from the ever-popular natural brand Neal’s Yard, this deodorant blends aloe vera, lavender, antibacterial tea tree and extract of Alpine Moss, the last of which fights the bacteria that cause odour. It would be gentle enough for sensitive skin, although there is added alcohol so proceed with caution!

Sprays can leave the underarms feeling damp but this blend dries quickly without tackiness. It is quite subtle so will need reapplying a few times a day and would be better for light activity days, or for those who don’t perspire much.
