Mesh routers integrate extender technology into a standard router package. A mesh router will come with two or more small "nodes" that you can put around the house. This eliminates dead zones with your WiFi and ensures blanket coverage across even the most palatial homes
Standard routers have neither these features nor those of WiFi 6, but they can compensate with extra antennae and bands for a more powerful signal. If you've got a smaller house or flat, a standard router should probably cover you without too much trouble.

A recent development, WiFi 6 routers began rolling out across the UK market throughout 2020. WiFi 6 triples the potential speed of any router to way above the maximum that most UK home broadband providers offer. But, the best part is that this power can be split across multiple devices, easily enabling everyone in your house to stream, game, work or download all at once.
If you're a gamer, or if you've got one in your house, you know the frustration caused when the connection is lost mid-game. You can prevent that either with a mesh router, or you can plug an ethernet cable in. We recommend a router with at least one ethernet cable port. If you don't want cables going all through the house, you can also buy an ethernet plug adapter that uses the wiring in your house like an extension cable.
Other inputs on modern routers include USB and USB 2.0 ports. They allow you to plug shared household printers, speakers or other USB devices directly into the router instead of someone's laptop or PC. Just make sure you get the right connection type for your device, or you may have to fork out for an adapter!
There are also dual or tri-band routers, which can be set up to show as two or three separate connections. That means you can have one for work and one for gaming, for example, so the bandwidth is never clogged up.
Online security is critical in the modern era. If you're working from home or buying a router for a small business, this is even more true.
Many high-end routers will come with a whole bundle of security features bundled in. VPNs, or Virtual Private Networks, let you do your online activities through a "proxy" connection in another place. This stops legitimate advertisers and websites tracking your location, but can also foil those with even shadier intent.
Guest networks are great for home or small businesses, as you don't have to let any random person that comes through the door connect to your main network. You can organise these yourself with some technical know-how, of course, but when it comes packaged as part of a router, it's incredibly easy to set up and maintain.
There are also Mu-MiMo modes, routers capable of communicating with multiple devices simultaneously. These are great for small business offices or even larger workspaces. That's because they are designed to use their smart capability to spread traffic evenly between devices on the network, and nodes if it's a mesh system.
Lastly, we have gaming mode routers – the most selfish of the lot, but definitely one for professional gamers or streamers. These routers automatically detect when you're playing a game and take a bunch of steps to ensure a smooth experience, such as prioritising your bandwidth or disabling updates or other automatic downloads.

This powerful device offers the technology and speed of a router twice its price point. Seriously! It also comes with a built-in security system providing anti-virus and parental control options.
You name the feature, the C2300 probably has it. MU-MiMo, VPN access, dual band connection, QoS prioritising – the only thing we found on the negative side is that it gets fairly hot during normal use. Still, the C2300 is the best value-for-money upscale router you can get right now, no doubt about it.
This amazing little concept mostly takes the form of a travel router, as it's tiny enough to fit in your pocket or backpack. In fact, its inbuilt VPN system is designed specifically to make public WiFi connections secure and private. It can even act as a booster to your phone's hotspot or mobile data!
At home, it's not great as a standalone central router. However, it can act as a super node in your mesh network, and as a backup to boost someone's mobile data around the house if your main connection goes down. A highly useful piece of kit!
Netgear's Nighthawk looks like some kind of stealth bomber, and its download speed is explosive too. With a max speed of 125 MB on download, only the most cutting edge of routers released this year will beat the RX500 on speed alone.
It also has a massive 12 streams, allowing almost every device in your house its own connection if you want. There's a gaming mode, MU-MiMo, a simple-to-use QoS service and 8 Ethernet connections – meaning everyone can share equally in the bounteous speed this beast of a router offers.
ASUS' AX58U is a great router for all kinds of people who need good internet, as it's a reasonably priced WiFi 6 option with loads of custom features and a lifetime security package. It's perfect for medium-sized houses, who can make use of its power across the whole house but don't have enough space to need a mesh setup.
The AX58U really is packed with features, too. Just a couple include the smart sleep mode capable of turning off one of the bands when its not being used, excellent parental controls through the dedicated ASUS app, and a 4G mode.
The Velop Tri-band is a mesh router that plays much more nicely with all network providers than Google's Nest. It comes with one central hub and two satellites, ensuring coverage over 6000 square feet (around 550 square metres) and 60+ devices. Perfect for a small business or spacious home!
It's very easy to set up using the Linksys app and comes with a bunch of features like a Guest Channel and MU-MiMo. A 90-day trial security package comes with the product, but will need to be renewed once the period is up.
This option comes in cheap for a WiFi 6 router. Boasting four antennas, this router has a long and stable reach. But be aware that a lack of MU-MiMo means it will not perform as well for multiple devices.
The AX 1800 has no shortage of ethernet connections, a USB port, and is compatible with the TP-Link OneMesh system, allowing it to be easily integrated into a mesh system in future. It also uses Target Wake Time technology to reduce the amount of power consumed by connecting devices.
Whilst it may be a way off the cutting edge since its release in 2014, Linksys MaxStream AC1900 is still a solid middle-of-the-pack router. It has eight connections, two USB ports and three antennas to use with its MiMo tech and dual bands.
That means, for most users simply streaming and gaming on multiple devices the MaxStream will handle the load with ease. However, it simply won't be as fast or reliable for power users on the top end as some of its more recent competitors.
To be frank, the AC1900 from D-Link is a fairly plain-looking piece of equipment. But, for your money, you get a very solid dual-band router that has some mid-level tech you'd expect from a slightly higher price point.
Dual band technology and MU-MiMo installed means splitting your traffic across multiple streams is an absolute breeze. The four antennas also give good coverage, even in a larger property. On the downside, the lack of USB inputs means the AC1900 won't be the best centrepiece router for tech nerds or anyone with a home business.
When it comes to maximum speed, this high-end router will basically blow almost every other option on our list away. But, you will need a heavy-duty service provider to make the most of its 30MB+ download speed.
The C5400's eight antennas do, however, boost the signal in a larger house considerably. It also has eight Ethernet ports and a tri-band mode, meaning you can prioritise any one piece of equipment onto its own connection with ease. With its high price tag and sci-fi stylings, it's not for everyone, but it does give amazing performance.
Available as a pair or singles, these lovely little machines from internet overlords Google can act as a main hub router or a node in your mesh network. They come fully linked up with Google Home and are super easy to link up to all your smart gadgets, so if you've got a smart house this could be right up your street.
As a standalone product used with another WiFi provider, however, it's a bit lacking. There are no USB or LAN connections and not many customisation options or controls if you haven't got Google Home.
