Silicone is an active ingredient in most serums due to its ability to make your hair very smooth and shiny. It coats each strand to ensure that your hair is free from flyaways, and this coating protects your hair from damage by the environment and heated styling tools. It even prevents breakage from brushing by reducing friction – so you can see why it’s such a common ingredient in serums.
Whilst some lower-quality silicones may damage your hair, those of a higher quality should be water-soluble so you can easily rinse them out when shampooing. If you’re still not keen on the idea of using a silicone-based serum, though, there are a few natural options out there; we’ve included one on our list of recommendations just in case!

Aside from silicones, sulphates and parabens are also commonly found in hair products to boost their performance. Sulphates such as Sodium Laurel Sulphate (SLeS) and Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) are cleansing agents which give hair products such as shampoo a luxurious lather. Parabens are preservatives that are added to ensure the product's stability and longevity.
There have been growing health concerns surrounding these two types of additives. But aside from this, they are also potential irritants that can trigger unpleasant reactions especially for those who are more prone to sensitivities.
To always be on the safe side, or if you prefer using natural products, opt for formulations that are sulphate and paraben-free. We have included this information in our spec table to help you to easily identify suitable products.
Trying to steer clear of sulphates? Here are our top 10 sulphate-free shampoos!
If you regularly use heat or chemical products to style your mane, this is definitely the serum to pick. Reasonably priced with simple yet chic packaging, this product is ideal if your hair needs a little extra TLC. You also don't need much product so it should last you a long time!
For curly hair types, managing frizz is a daily struggle but a necessary one if you want to achieve definition and bouncy locks. Luckily, Umberto Giannini understands the struggle, and has come up with a moisturising formula to help make all types of coily hair textures more manageable.
A few pump of this serum will detangle and smooth over every single strand of hair, giving it more definition for a flawless finish. It is also suitable for damaged, colour treated hair. However, fine or oily hair types might find it a little too heavy.
So, it’s ideal for those who want a cruelty-free serum with a delicious coconut scent. As it’s lightweight, this is a good choice for a range of hair types. Plus, it’s incredibly affordable for the large amount that you get! It does have fragrance however, which may cause irritation for sensitive skin types.
Probably the most important thing to remember when it comes to serum is that less is always more when it comes to the application. One or two drops should be all that’s needed to tame frizz – any more than that, and you may risk making your hair look greasy.
Another way to prevent your hair from looking like it’s oily is to only apply the serum to the ends and middle section of your hair, avoiding your scalp. Some thicker serums may be difficult to apply evenly. If this is the case, rubbing the serum into your hands first will warm it up and allow you to evenly distribute it across your hair.
