A recommendation service that carefully researches each product and consults with experts across many disciplines. We are constantly creating new content to provide the best shopping experience from choosing ‘cosmetics’ to ‘food and drink’, ‘home appliances’ to ‘kids and baby’ products, reaching users all across the United Kingdom.
Table of Contents
No doubt about it, they’re large and sometimes heavy, which means they’re not very easy to pack up for a day out, and most suited to bigger children rather than small. You’ll also need two hands to operate them. They’d be the most suitable choice for adults too, whether you’re bonding with the housemates or just wanting to join in with the kids.
Also a larger size means a large capacity, so you can play all afternoon without having to constantly rush off to the sink mid-battle. Speaking of which, they can be refilled either under the tap, or via submersion in water. This dual-refill method could come in handy if you’re somewhere without easy access to a faucet, or you just want the option of both.
Have fun with the whole family with our Best Garden Games!
There are some more modernised versions on the market that have stepped up the tank size and overall appearance but still operate via a trigger and fill with the same ease, so these would be our recommendation if you don’t want to spend a lot but don’t want something too weak or low in quality.
Little tip, if you do want to give any unwelcome garden visitors such as cats or birds a quick splash, these would be the most suitable as they’ll get the message across without being powerful enough to harm them.
On top of this, the fact they’re comprised of soft foam rather than hard plastic means they’re a safer choice, especially around smaller children or those who tend to get a bit overexcited when playing.
They don’t hold too much in their tanks, and need to be dunked in a body of water to be refilled, so if you aren’t using them in the pool or in the sea you’ll have to make sure a sink or bucket is kept full at home – unless you have your own pool of course!

As with most toys, there should also be an age range mentioned on the product, so have a look for this too if you’re unsure whether it is suitable for your kids. It's always best to opt for lighter and less powerful water guns to keep play fun for the whole family.
For those playing in smaller spaces or in the water, 5 metres (approx. 16 feet) or so will be enough to catch your foes even when on the move. If there’s a few of you playing in a large area, you’ll probably want a longer range of 7-10 metres (approx. 25-30 feet).
