Shaving delicate areas can be a little daunting with a larger blade unit, so for the option to shave more than just the legs, look for models with caps or attachments. These will reduce the blade size to more carefully reach a smaller area and ensure a precise shave.
If you’d also like the option of trimming (for the bikini area, for example), choose sets that include guard attachments to limit the amount of hair removed when in use. There will be an explanation of where on the body each product and its attachments are designed for, so if you’re not sure, just check the shaver’s description.
They will comprise of a basic, straight razor similar to the smaller blades on a large shaver, which won’t trap and pull on longer hairs like a foil blade might. You may be able to also use bikini shavers or trimmers for your underarms, so check for this suitability if this is important to you.
Those who wax or epilate the bikini area will also find these compact shavers a handy piece of kit to have around. You’ll be able to keep things trim in between waxes or prep the area ahead of a salon trip if you haven’t had one in a while!
Often facial hair removers will include eyebrow shaping and trimming attachments, comprised of a thin comb-like blade on the side of a flexible head. Look out for products that do both if you’d like this extra feature.
Apply some aloe vera gel after shaving to smooth skin and prevent ingrown hairs!
You’re probably used to shaving with a disposable in the shower or bath, so to keep things simple, look for a water-safe shaver. This also means that you can use your regular cream or shower gel for an even smoother shave. Of course, wet shavers can also be operated dry if you need a quick touch up or don’t always want to head to the shower to shave.
The other bonus for choosing a wet/dry shaver is that it will be much easier to keep clean and hygienic, as you can safely run it under the showerhead or tap to remove any excess soap or hairs caught in the blades. This should keep it functioning better for longer, too.
As well as keeping an eye out for shavers specified as wet/dry, it's also worth checking the level of waterproofing. This means noting whether it is entirely waterproof or only splash-proof – an especially pertinent point if you intend to use it in the bath where it risks being submerged in water.
Most lady shavers are cordless and usually powered either by batteries or via a charging unit with a standard plug or a USB cable. Battery-powered designs will be useful for travel, particularly in foreign countries where the voltage may not match the UK shaver. They’ll also suit those prone to forgetting to charge up their gadgets!
On the other hand, with models powered via a corded unit, you can be sure that you’ve got a fully-charged shaver, so you won’t risk running out of juice halfway through usage. Plus, you won’t have to always have spare batteries around.
However, more blades equal more friction, which can increase irritation on sensitive skin types and even the possibility of ingrown hairs. If you're prone to these conditions, you'd perhaps be better off with a single-blade shaver.
If you have a nickel allergy, electric razors are said to be a better choice than disposable as the metal blades that potentially contain nickel particles are covered by the floating foils. It’s hard to find completely nickel-free shavers, but try to find those enhanced with hypoallergenic blades, as they will be designed to protect your skin.
The blades in electrical shavers maintain their sharpness for around a year, after, they become blunt and need replacing. Blunt razors not only inhibit shaving performance but can cause rashes and soreness and will pull more on your hair.
Therefore, it’s a good idea to choose a shaver with a replaceable blade to prolong its life, especially if you are investing a fair amount of money in the product. You should be able to source spare blades directly from the manufacturer, Amazon or a specialist electrical parts supplier.
It has also been certified as 100% waterproof even when submerged, earning it an IPX6 rating. It can be charged via the stylish stand, and even includes an epilator head and silicone facial cleanser!
Interested in epilators? Take a look at our top 10 list!
The other bonus of the epilating head inclusion is that this is a very safe shaver – there's a light to see what you're doing and an anti-slip grip on the handle to keep you steady in the shower. However, it's not the cheapest model, and if you don't end up using the epilator, it could be a bit of a waste.
