A traditional tube of toothpaste may last for weeks, but the plastic tube will potentially remain in nature (or in landfill) for hundreds of years before eventually becoming micro-plastic particles which can enter the marine food chain. Toothpaste tablets are toothpaste without the water added that you chew between your front teeth for about 10 seconds. They mix with your saliva to form a paste that you then brush with a damp toothbrush as usual.
They can take some getting used to, but are very convenient for taking on holiday. In environmental terms, they require much less energy to transport than ready-to-use toothpaste, which is usually 20 - 40 % water.
For those wanting a more familiar eco dental routine, ready-to-use toothpaste can be found in glass jars with metal lids. A spatula is needed, and often comes supplied, as simply inserting a wet toothbrush into the jar is not hygienic and will reduce the shelf life of your paste dramatically.
There are some eco-friendly toothpastes which come in conventional tubes. In fact, metal tubes and those with a reduced plastic content can even be found. These options might suit you better if you're just starting out on your planet-saving journey, or if you are trying to convince less-enthusiastic members of your household to go green.

In order to reduce or eliminate plastic from their packaging, eco-Friendly toothpastes have had to get creative. Glass jars are a great plastic-free solution, especially if they come with metal (usually aluminium) lids.
Many toothpaste tablets also come in glass jars, which is useful as tooth tabs need to be kept in a sealed container to stop them absorbing moisture and going crumbly. Just be aware that although metal and glass can be recycled indefinitely, unlike plastic which degrades significantly each time, recycling still requires a significant energy input.
For the most eco-friendly option, try to look for toothpaste that's available in home compostable packaging or re-use a washed-out glass jar for storing toothpaste tabs. If you buy toothpaste tablets in a cardboard box, be sure to immediately transfer them to a sealed container as soon as they arrive at your home to prevent them turning to soggy dust.
To help you cut down on landfill waste, here are some of our favourite plastic-free toiletries
The NHS guidelines recommend that adults should brush their teeth using a toothpaste containing 1,350-1,500 ppm fluoride, twice a day. Fluoride use is a personal choice - it's a naturally occurring mineral which protects teeth from decay by helping remineralise lost tooth enamel, but too much can cause discolouration spots on the teeth.
Many brands of eco-friendly toothpaste offer fluoride-containing or fluoride-free options, you'll be able to find paste in a jar and toothpaste tablets which suit your fluoride preferences. Those products with fluoride which have made our top 10 (are aimed at adults), pleasingly all contain the dentist-suggested 1450 ppm (parts per million) of fluoride.
The term 'carbon footprint' refers to the amount of greenhouse gas emitted when making and transporting a product to its final destination. This means that products made on the other side of the world and imported will have a much larger carbon footprint than those made in Europe or in the UK.
When choosing an eco-friendly toothpaste, look to see where it is manufactured. Even if it's 'zero-waste', you may be adding unnecessary transport emissions to the atmosphere by buying products from far away, when there are many manufactured much closer to home.
When researching the company that manufactures your toothpaste, there are certain stringent accreditations which indicate a real dedication to the environment. For example, commitment to '1% for the planet' means that 1% of profits goes to environmental causes.
Similarly, being certified as a 'B Corp company' requires them to 'give the same rigour to their social and environmental impact as they do to their financial returns.' Finally, to be 'climate neutral' the company must offset their carbon production and commit to reducing any future emissions too.
DENTtabs are simple to use - simply chew one between your front teeth for a few seconds and your saliva will turn it into paste ready to scrub with a damp toothbrush. Once finished, the packaging can be home composted, making this truly a zero waste product!
You can buy DENTtabs with 1450 ppm fluoride or without, and there's a strawberry flavoured version too. We love both the flavour and the texture of this eco-toothpaste. Neither too hard nor too crumbly, they're a great choice if you're new to the world of toothpaste tabs.
These UK-made toothpaste tablets come in a 'pillowpack' cardboard outer sleeve, with an inner biodegradable bag made from home-compostable Natureflex. Better yet, Truthtabs are made by a certified B-Corp company, so you can be assured of their dedication to the environment and to workers' rights.
The fluoride content is a dentist-pleasing 1450 ppm, and the wild mint flavour will freshen your breath, leaving your teeth sparkling clean! Some reviewers found that they needed to use more than one at a time, but many more praised their non-chalky consistency.
Truthpaste is made in Brighton, here in the UK. It comes in a glass jar with a metal lid, and you can buy a metal spatula separately on the company's website. There are 6 unique flavours to choose from, including two mild versions aimed at kids.

These UK-made toothpaste tablets come in two flavours and can be purchased with fluoride or without. They only contain eleven ingredients, and are available as part of a subscription service - so you'll never run out!
Brushd toothpaste tablets can be purchased in a glass jar with a metal lid, or in a cardboard box with a compostable bag inside. This lighter option of ordering refills also reduces the carbon footprint of each delivery!
Georganics toothpaste tabs come in a variety of organically-certified flavours to suit various tastes, including English peppermint, spearmint, orange, tea tree, eucalyptus and activated charcoal. They're also some of the more robust options available and are sold in a sealed glass jar, so won't degrade in transit.
Organic and made in the UK, they're palm-oil free, cruelty-free and suitable for vegans. There's even the option to buy Georganics dental products with fluoride. It's just a shame that compostable refill packs aren't available.
These comparatively large toothpaste tablets come in an amber-coloured apothecary style glass jar that'll look great on any bathroom shelf. They contain the recommended dose of fluoride and are SLS-free. Users praise the minty flavour and full clean provided by these generous waterless tablets!
That said, it would be nice to have the option of refills in compostable cardboard packaging to reduce the carbon footprint of repeat purchases. For this reason, this toothpaste sits further down in our ranking list.
Weleda are a German company which prioritises the environment, giving 1% of their profits to charity. This plant gel toothpaste is their most gentle, especially for sensitive teeth, but there are 3 other formulas to choose from too.
The impressively short ingredients list includes extracts of myrrh and chamomile to calm irritation, silica to gently clean without damaging tooth enamel, and peppermint and spearmint oil to freshen breath. Disappointingly, the packaging is made from plastic, making it less eco-friendly than others.
This very unusual black toothpaste has plenty of rave reviews. In particular, fans love the clean mouth feel after each use. If a lighter coloured toothpaste is required, there are 6 other flavours, including mint and a child-friendly strawberry version.
The Swedish Humble Co, that makes its toothpastes in Germany, is well known for its social responsibility and charitable donations. Unsurprisingly its products are cruelty free and suitable for vegans. Plus, the 'Green Leaf' technology used to create the packaging, reduces the carbon footprint of each tube by 33%.
This cult toothpaste is in a metal tube could be an easy swap to make for those who prefer a traditional toothpaste. The taste, however, is anything but ordinary, with a special blend of antiseptic ingredients and essential flavour oils - four of which stem from the 1890 recipe!
The unique strong taste is a real selling point, and even though it's fluoride-free, some suggest alternating it with a fluoride paste at night. Just note that it does contain SLS, which may put some off.
